The iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra are both 6.9-inch, 120Hz flagships, but they suit different priorities. Choose the iPhone if you prefer iOS, Apple’s ecosystem, and a variable-aperture main camera; choose the Galaxy if you want Android customization, a built-in S Pen, Privacy Display, and a lighter phone. Neither is a universal winner, and the better buy depends on your devices, camera preferences, storage needs, and local price.

Which one should you pick?
Pick the iPhone if Apple’s ecosystem is already home
If you use an iPhone alongside an Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, or services built around Apple accounts, iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence are the natural fit. Moving to Samsung means changing how your phone works with those devices and services. The reverse applies if your daily setup is built around Android and Galaxy devices: the S26 Ultra gives you Galaxy AI and Android customization without requiring a switch to iOS.
Pick the Galaxy if you’ll use the S Pen or Privacy Display
The S Pen is stored in the phone, so it is ready for handwriting, marking up documents, and other stylus tasks without carrying a separate pen. Privacy Display limits visibility from off-angle viewing, which can help when viewing sensitive information in public. Apple has no equivalent feature cited here.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Pick the Galaxy if lower weight matters
Both phones are large, but the Galaxy is listed at 214g and 7.9mm thick, compared with 249g and 8.8mm for the iPhone. That 35g weight difference is worth considering if you carry a phone for long periods or prefer a thinner device.
Pick based on camera controls, not megapixel totals
Apple’s 48MP main camera adds variable aperture: Apple says it lets the camera control incoming light and depth of field. Samsung’s camera system pairs a 200MP wide camera with an additional telephoto camera compared with the iPhone’s listed setup. That gives the phones different kinds of flexibility, but megapixel counts alone do not establish which takes better photos. No comparable independent test of these two models is established here.
How do the cameras differ?
The iPhone 18 Pro Max has three listed rear cameras: 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide, and 48MP telephoto. Its main camera’s variable aperture is the notable change. Apple describes it as a way to control how much light enters the camera and how much of the image remains in focus. That control may appeal to people who want to influence exposure and depth of field.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultra-wide, and two telephoto cameras listed at 10MP and 50MP. TechRadar points to the extra camera and telephoto flexibility as differences in the Galaxy’s system. The resolution figures describe hardware, not image quality: lighting, processing, focus, and the kind of zoom you use also matter. Without a comparable test, choosing between them on a claim of superior photo quality would go beyond the established evidence.
Are the screens and designs meaningfully different?
Both displays are listed as 6.9-inch OLED-class panels with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. TechRadar lists peak brightness of 3,000 nits for the iPhone and 2,600 nits for the Galaxy, while giving the Galaxy higher pixel density. These are specification differences; they do not, by themselves, settle which screen you will prefer.
The Galaxy’s Privacy Display is a functional distinction: it limits what people beside you can see. If that feature matters, it may be more relevant than the brightness figures. Apple’s phone is heavier and thicker, while the Galaxy is lighter and thinner. Both have IP68 ratings, but TechRadar reports different water-resistance test depths: 6m for up to 30 minutes for Apple, and 1.5m for up to 30 minutes for Samsung. Apple confirms its IP68 rating under IEC 60529. Water resistance is not a reason to deliberately submerge either phone. Apple’s technical specifications

How do performance and software support compare?
Apple identifies the iPhone’s chip as A20 Pro and its software as iOS 27, with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Samsung identifies a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, running Android 17 with Galaxy AI according to TechRadar’s October 3 comparison; Samsung originally shipped the device with Android 16.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSamsung said its platform delivers up to 19% higher CPU performance, 39% higher NPU performance, and 24% higher GPU performance. Those are Samsung’s own comparisons, not independent head-to-head benchmarks against Apple’s A20 Pro. They should not be treated as proof that one phone is faster in your apps.
TechRadar says Samsung commits to seven major Android updates. It describes Apple’s support history as typically similar, but that is not an explicit update promise for this model in the cited sources. If a specific support period is essential to your decision, confirm the current official policy for the exact model and region rather than assuming the historical pattern is a guarantee.

What do battery life and charging figures actually tell you?
Apple says the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of typical-use battery life. Apple’s testing took place in August 2026 with preproduction units and software. Its typical-use figure uses median iPhone-user values across a mix of active and passive use. Samsung’s product page claims 31 hours of video playback and says the phone can reach up to 75% charge in around 30 minutes. These are manufacturers’ figures from different test methods, so they are not a direct battery-life comparison. Samsung’s US product page
TechRadar lists 60W wired and 25W wireless charging for both phones, but labels the iPhone’s 60W figure unofficial. Apple says fast wired charging requires a 60W-capable USB-C cable and a suitable USB PD 3.1/AVS adapter, sold separately. Check adapter compatibility before buying a charger for that purpose. Samsung’s US retail page says the phone does not include a charger.
Which storage size—and price—makes sense?
Apple offers the iPhone 18 Pro Max in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. Samsung’s US listing offers the Galaxy S26 Ultra in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. If you record a lot of video, keep large offline libraries, or hold onto phones for years, compare the configuration you actually need rather than only the entry-level models.

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Samsung announced the S26 series in February 2026; TechRadar reported both phones were widely available. Availability, pricing, and configurations outside the United States may differ.
Which is the better value for you?
For the entry 256GB configuration in TechRadar’s October 3 US snapshot, the listed starting prices differ by 99 cents. That small gap does not decide the value question: the phones differ in software, weight, camera hardware, privacy features, and top storage capacity. Compare current local prices for the storage tier you want, then factor in whether switching ecosystems would mean replacing or losing convenient access to other devices and services.
