Apple’s specifications list the iPhone 18 Pro in Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy, with an aluminum unibody. The available sources do not establish discoloration as a confirmed or widespread iPhone 18 Pro defect. Reports about finish wear on earlier models and rumors about the 18 Pro are context—not proof that this model has a defect, how often it occurs, or what causes it. If you’re buying used, judge the actual phone in front of you and make sure its condition matches the listing.
What is known about iPhone 18 Pro discoloration?
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications identify four finishes—Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy—and describe an aluminum unibody design. The specifications do not say that any finish is prone to discoloration.
MacRumors reported on May 5, 2026, on rumors about the model retaining an aluminum finish amid complaints about durability, and on June 15, 2026, summarized prior-generation color-shift reports and rumors that the new colors might face similar issues. Those are secondary reports, not an Apple service notice or a controlled test of iPhone 18 Pro units. They do not establish a defect, its cause, a failure rate, or a color that is more at risk. See the May report and the June report.

How to inspect the finish and exterior
- Remove the case. Inspect the bare phone in neutral, bright light so the case does not hide wear or affect how the color looks.
- Compare surfaces. Check the sides, back, corners, camera surround, and areas around the buttons for uneven color, chips, scratches, scuffs, dents, or color loss. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide specifically recommends checking the sides and back for scratches, scuffs, and dents and removing the case if needed.
- Document the condition. Photograph the phone from consistent angles. Compare those images with the seller’s listing, including any areas the listing does not show clearly.
- Ask about the discrepancy. If the finish looks different from the listing, ask the seller what they know about the phone’s history and whether the described condition includes the visible wear. Do not assume a specific chemical, manufacturing, or repair cause from color alone.
Check the seller and return terms
For an online purchase, Apple recommends using a reliable seller, understanding the return period and conditions, asking what a seller’s certification process actually checks, and inspecting the phone on arrival. For a cosmetic concern, confirm that the return terms address the delivered condition—not just whether the phone powers on. Keep a copy of the listing, its images, and the seller’s description, and report any mismatch promptly.
Confirm Activation Lock and basic operation
Apple’s guidance is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If you’re buying in person, ask the seller to turn it off before payment. If an online purchase arrives at an “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen, Apple advises returning it. Once the phone is set up, test its basic functions; a clean-looking exterior is not a complete condition check.

Review battery health and repair history
Battery health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and Charging and review maximum capacity and any alerts. Apple warns that battery-health information may not be accurate if the battery cannot be verified as genuine. Its genuine-battery guidance explains this limitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteParts and Service History
Open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History, when present. Apple says labels can include Genuine, Used, Unknown, or Unverified; what they mean depends on the part and circumstances. An Unknown label can indicate a non-genuine, unverified, incomplete, modified, or malfunctioning part. It does not by itself show that the exterior finish is defective. Apple explains the labels in its Parts and Service History guide.

Compare used listings on evidence, not color rumors
When deciding between listings, compare the condition of each actual phone against its photos and description, then consider seller reliability and return terms, Activation Lock and network-lock status, battery health and alerts, and Parts and Service History. The available sources do not establish color-by-color discoloration rates or support choosing one iPhone 18 Pro finish as less likely to discolor than another.
