On iPhone 18 Pro, you can add the Cinematic effect after recording an eligible 60 fps clip in standard Video mode: the clip must have been recorded with the Main camera. Open it in Photos, choose Edit > Cinematic > Depth Control, adjust the slider, then tap Done. This post-recording option is different from recording in Cinematic mode.
Apply the effect to an existing 60 fps video
Apple documents this post-capture workflow for standard Video-mode footage recorded with the iPhone 18 Pro’s Main camera. It is not a general conversion for every video source.
- Open Photos and select the clip recorded in Video mode with the Main camera.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Cinematic, then tap Depth Control.
- Drag the slider to adjust the depth-of-field effect, then tap Done.
For a quicker application, open the video, tap Cinematic, then tap Cinematic On. To undo saved changes, open the video and tap Revert. Apple documents these controls in its iPhone User Guide.

Apple describes Cinematic mode as a depth-of-field effect that keeps the subject sharp while blurring the foreground and background. During Cinematic recording, iPhone can identify a subject and maintain focus, shift focus when it identifies another subject, and let you adjust focus manually during recording or later in Photos. For an ordinary clip receiving the effect afterward, Apple documents a depth-of-field adjustment; do not assume it gains the same captured focus information as footage originally recorded in Cinematic mode. See Apple’s Cinematic mode guide.

Apply Cinematic afterward or record in Cinematic mode?
| Workflow | Use it when | What it does | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apply the effect afterward | You already have a standard Video-mode clip | Add or adjust the Cinematic depth-of-field effect in Photos | The documented iPhone 18 Pro workflow requires Video mode and the Main camera |
| Record in Cinematic mode | You want Cinematic behavior while capturing | Record Cinematic video at supported resolution and frame rate | Choose Cinematic mode and its recording settings before capture |
Apple lists Cinematic recording on iPhone 18 Pro up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps. Apple’s recording-settings guide also lists 1080 HD at 60 fps. To select a recording format, go to Settings > Camera > Record Cinematic. The guide says Cinematic recording defaults to 1080 HD at 30 fps on supported models. Available options depend on the supported camera and setting; Apple’s specifications associate some video capabilities with the Fusion Main camera. Check Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications and recording-settings guide for the current details.

If the Cinematic control is unavailable
- Confirm the clip was recorded on the iPhone 18 Pro in standard Video mode using the Main camera.
- If it came from another camera or a third-party app, Apple’s documented compatibility does not establish that the post-recording effect will be available.
- If you have not recorded yet and want Cinematic behavior, switch to Cinematic mode and choose a supported format under Settings > Camera > Record Cinematic.
