Apple reportedly considered 16GB of RAM for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo, but that is an unconfirmed earlier-plan claim from leaker Instant Digital—not an Apple specification. MacRumors reports that Xcode 27 indicates 12GB in iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; its cited Xcode data did not cover iPhone Duo.

What the 16GB RAM report actually claims

In a report published October 6, 2026, MacRumors says Instant Digital posted that Apple initially planned 16GB of RAM for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo. The report does not establish when Apple considered that capacity, and it does not document an internal Apple plan. The 16GB figure should therefore be treated as a leaker-attributed claim, not a confirmed specification. Read the MacRumors report.

How that compares with the reported 12GB configurations

Device or claim RAM figure Evidence status
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max 12GB MacRumors says Xcode 27 indicates this capacity; the report describes it as matching the iPhone 17 Pro models.
iPhone Duo 12GB Expected based on other reporting summarized by MacRumors, including a report that Samsung would supply 12GB modules. The cited Xcode data did not include Duo.
Alleged earlier plan for iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo 16GB Attributed to Instant Digital by MacRumors; the timing and Apple’s confirmation are not established.

The two figures do not have the same evidentiary status. The Pro models’ 12GB figure is tied to Xcode data as described by MacRumors, while the 16GB figure is an alleged earlier plan attributed to a leaker. For Duo, 12GB remains an expectation based on reporting rather than confirmation from that Xcode check.

Why Apple may have moved away from 16GB

MacRumors points to global memory-supply constraints and rising costs as a likely explanation. Its report cites earlier coverage of higher prices for 12GB modules, Bloomberg reporting that memory costs led Apple to discuss a higher starting price for the foldable, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s statement that DRAM shortages were forcing Apple to scale back 2026 hardware shipment plans.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

That context does not prove why Apple chose a particular memory configuration. No confirmed explanation from Apple is established in the report, so the shortage theory remains a possible explanation rather than a documented internal decision.

What the RAM rumor does—and does not—tell you

The reported capacities alone do not show how the phones will perform. MacRumors’ report supplies no benchmark results or tested experience comparing 12GB with 16GB. It also does not establish that the alleged 16GB plan was finalized, or when it may have been considered.

For now, the clearest distinction is between reported configuration data for the two Pro models and the unconfirmed earlier-plan claim covering the Pro lineup and Duo. Duo’s 12GB figure should remain an expectation, not be described as an Xcode-confirmed specification.
