How much does the Galaxy Z Fold8 cost compared with the iPhone 17?
Samsung’s US product page lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 from $1,899.99 before trade-in. Tom’s Guide reported US starting prices around availability of $1,899 for 256GB, $2,099 for 512GB and $2,499 for 1TB; it also reported starting prices of £1,699 in the UK and AU$2,699 in Australia. These figures are regional launch-price context, not a guarantee of current checkout pricing. Samsung’s page also includes trade-in and promotional messaging, which should not be confused with the listed starting price. Tom’s Guide’s September 30, 2026 review provides the regional configuration context.

Which phone should you choose?
Choose the iPhone 17 for a lighter conventional phone
The iPhone 17 weighs 177g and has a single 6.3-inch display. It may suit you if you prefer a phone that stays in a conventional handset form and want to use iOS. Apple’s listed rear-camera hardware and optical-quality 2x capability are useful specification details, but they do not by themselves prove that its photos are better than the Fold8’s.

Consider the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you will use its open screen
The Fold8 is 201g and gives you a 7.6-inch inner display when opened, alongside its 5.5-inch cover display. That larger unfolded screen may be useful for reading, video, or viewing two items side by side. The trade-off is carrying a heavier foldable phone; whether the added screen area is worth it depends on how often you expect to open and use it.

The Fold8 offers a 1TB storage configuration in addition to 256GB and 512GB options; Apple lists 256GB and 512GB for the iPhone 17. Compare the configuration you would actually buy, in the same market and at current prices. A price difference between unlike storage tiers or between a list price and a trade-in offer is not a useful measure of value.

Camera, battery and durability: what the specifications establish
Camera specifications are not a photo-quality ranking
Apple lists two 48MP rear cameras and optical-quality 2x telephoto capability. Samsung lists 50MP wide and ultra-wide rear cameras and up to 10x digital zoom. Megapixel counts and a digital-zoom maximum do not establish which phone produces better images; the sources here do not provide a standardized comparative camera test.
Battery figures are not directly comparable
Samsung lists a typical 4,800mAh battery and claims up to 26 hours of video playback for the Fold8. The reviewed Apple specifications page does not provide a directly comparable battery figure. These details are not enough to conclude which phone lasts longer in everyday use.

Do not infer an unlisted Fold8 resistance rating
Apple publishes an IP68 rating for the iPhone 17, with a stated maximum depth of 6m for up to 30 minutes. The reviewed Samsung product page describes construction materials but does not state an equivalent rating. That difference in published information does not establish that the Fold8 has no protection; check Samsung’s current specifications for the market where you plan to buy.
