The iPhone 17 starts at $929 in the U.S. for 256GB, while Google’s Pixel 10a is displayed from $524 for 128GB—a $405 difference between the listed entry prices, but not between equal-storage models. Google’s displayed price has $599 crossed out, so it is promotional and may change. The better choice depends on the price and capacity you need, your camera priorities, and whether you prefer iOS or Android.

How much more does the iPhone 17 cost?

As listed on the U.S. stores checked October 7, 2026, Apple’s unlocked iPhone 17 costs $929 with 256GB or $1,129 with 512GB. Google displays the Pixel 10a from $524, with $599 crossed out, and lists 128GB and 256GB configurations. The $405 gap is the subtraction of the displayed entry prices ($929 minus $524), not a storage-matched comparison. See Apple’s U.S. iPhone 17 store listing and Google’s Pixel 10a U.S. Store page for current configurations and prices.

To compare value fairly, check the checkout price for the storage tier you actually want on both stores. The Pixel’s displayed starting price is promotional; trade-in offers, carrier pricing, financing, and availability can alter what you pay. Those offers are not included in the unlocked Apple price or the displayed Google price above.

How do their displays compare?

Both phones have 6.3-inch OLED displays with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple calls its panel Super Retina XDR OLED and lists a resolution of 2,622 × 1,206 at 460 pixels per inch. Google calls its panel Actua pOLED and lists 1,080 × 2,424 at 422.2 pixels per inch. Apple also specifies Always-On and ProMotion; Google specifies Smooth Display from 60Hz to 120Hz.

The makers’ brightness figures use different labels and conditions, so they are specifications rather than a controlled head-to-head brightness result. Apple lists 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits HDR peak, and 3,000 nits outdoor peak. Google lists up to 2,000 nits HDR and 3,000 nits peak. See the manufacturers’ iPhone 17 technical specifications and Pixel 10a specifications.

What camera hardware and video do they offer?

Specification iPhone 17 Pixel 10a
Rear cameras 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide, described by Apple as a 48MP Dual Fusion system 48MP wide and 13MP ultrawide
Zoom description 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto option Digital Super Zoom up to 8x
Front camera 18MP Center Stage 13MP
Video 4K recording; supported frame rates and features vary 4K recording; supported frame rates and features vary

These camera specifications describe hardware and modes, not which phone produces better photographs. They do not establish shutter response, low-light results, color rendering, or video consistency. The zoom labels also describe different approaches, so the numbers alone are not a direct quality comparison. Choose based on the camera features you use, and consult comparable independent photo and video testing if image quality is decisive.

What do the battery and charging claims mean?

Manufacturer claim iPhone 17 Pixel 10a
Battery figure Up to 30 hours of video playback; up to 27 hours of streamed video playback Typical battery capacity of 5,100mAh; 30+ hours of battery life
Charging claim Up to 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable Up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 45W USB-C PPS charger or higher
Charger availability Claim specifies an adapter and cable; check the package and accessory requirements 45W charger sold separately

These are manufacturer claims with different measures and conditions, not results from a comparable battery test. “Video playback” and “battery life” should not be treated as interchangeable runtimes. Charging speed also depends on using the specified compatible equipment.

How long will they receive software updates?

Google explicitly promises seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates for the Pixel 10a. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications page does not state a fixed support duration, so the published information here does not establish a directly comparable number of years for the iPhone. If a guaranteed timeline is central to your decision, factor in Google’s stated commitment and seek Apple’s current support terms rather than assuming numerical parity.

Which phone fits your setup and priorities?

Choose by storage and actual price

Start with the capacity you need: the iPhone 17’s listed base configuration is 256GB, while the Pixel 10a starts at 128GB. Compare checkout prices at the same capacity where possible, and treat Google’s crossed-out $599 as a promotion reference rather than the current displayed starting price.

Choose by operating-system ecosystem

If you already rely on iPhone, Apple services, or iOS workflows, the iPhone 17 may be the more convenient fit. If you use Android or Google services and prefer that environment, the Pixel 10a may make more sense. Ecosystem preference is personal; processor names alone do not determine which phone will feel better in everyday use.

Check SIM compatibility before switching

For the U.S. iPhone 17, Apple specifies eSIM with no physical SIM card compatibility. Google lists one nano-SIM plus eSIM for the Pixel 10a. Before changing phones or carriers, confirm eSIM support with your carrier and check how your contacts, photos, messages, and other data will transfer.

Account for water-resistance qualifications

Both manufacturers list IP68 dust and water resistance. Apple specifies the iPhone 17 rating under IEC 60529 as a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Google’s reviewed Pixel 10a page lists IP68 but does not give the same depth-and-time detail. These ratings are not a reason to deliberately expose either phone to water.

So, which has better specs?

There is no single specification that makes one phone the better choice for everyone. The iPhone 17 offers more base storage, a higher listed pixel density, and Apple’s stated video-playback figures; the Pixel 10a has a substantially lower displayed U.S. starting price, a stated seven-year update commitment, and a physical nano-SIM option. Camera quality and real-world battery performance cannot be settled from these manufacturer specifications alone. Compare the storage tier and checkout price first, then weigh display features, independently tested camera and battery results, and your preferred operating system.
