The iPhone 17e starts with twice the storage and a newer-generation chip, while the iPhone 16 has a dedicated Ultra Wide camera and a higher listed wireless-charging maximum. In Apple’s U.S. listings checked October 7, 2026, the unlocked iPhone 16 was $829 and the iPhone 17e started at $699—a $130 difference at those listed prices. The 17e’s $599 price was its March 2026 launch price, not the later listing price.

What is the iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 17e price difference?
At the prices shown on Apple’s U.S. pages on October 7, 2026, the unlocked iPhone 16 at $829 cost $130 more than the iPhone 17e listed from $699. Those are observed listing prices and can change. The comparison is also not storage-matched: the iPhone 16 listing starts at 128GB, while the 17e starts at 256GB.

Carrier promotions, trade-in credits, and retailer prices may change the amount a particular buyer pays. Check the same storage capacity, phone condition, and offer terms before deciding which is cheaper for you.
Which phone has the better specifications for your needs?
Choose iPhone 17e for more starting storage and a newer chip generation
The 17e starts at 256GB, double the iPhone 16’s 128GB base capacity, and uses Apple’s A19 rather than A18. Those specifications may matter if you want more room for photos, apps, and downloaded media without moving to a higher storage tier. Apple’s listed chip and core details do not establish a specific real-world performance lead, and the GPU core counts differ: four on the 17e and five on the iPhone 16.

Choose iPhone 16 for a dedicated Ultra Wide camera
The iPhone 16 has a separate 12MP Ultra Wide rear camera in addition to its 48MP Fusion main camera. That gives it a distinct wider framing option for landscapes, groups, and tight spaces. The 17e’s listed rear system is a 48MP Fusion camera with a 2x optical-quality telephoto option through Fusion, but it does not list a separate Ultra Wide camera.

Consider battery estimates and wireless charging separately
Apple lists up to 26 hours of video playback for iPhone 17e and up to 22 hours for iPhone 16. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent side-by-side battery test results, so actual runtime depends on use and conditions.

For wireless charging, the specification favors iPhone 16: Apple lists MagSafe and Qi2 charging up to 25W, compared with up to 15W for iPhone 17e. These are listed maximums; the phone and compatible charging equipment must support the relevant rate.

- Pick iPhone 17e if you prefer its newer A19 generation, want twice the base storage, value Apple’s higher stated video-playback maximum, and do not need a separate Ultra Wide camera.
- Pick iPhone 16 if the dedicated Ultra Wide camera, Camera Control, or its higher listed MagSafe and Qi2 charging ceiling matters more to you.
- Recheck the price before buying: the observed $130 gap is tied to Apple’s U.S. listings checked October 7, 2026. Discounts, storage choice, carrier offers, and trade-in eligibility can change the value calculation.
Apple’s announcement says the 17e’s C1X modem is up to 2x faster than the C1 in iPhone 16e. That comparison is with the 16e, not the iPhone 16, so it does not establish a direct modem-speed advantage between the two phones here.
