Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max if video, dependable battery endurance, Apple-device integration, and a streamlined iOS experience matter most. Choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra if you want flexible zoom cameras, a built-in S Pen, a sharper display, multitasking, and more control over Android.
In August 2026, neither is a current-generation flagship. Samsung’s US product page lists the S24 Ultra as sold out, and Apple’s current iPhone lineup may no longer include the 16 Pro Max for direct purchase. Treat stock, condition, warranty, battery health, and the price of a newer model as part of the decision—not as afterthoughts. Samsung’s US availability page and Apple’s iPhone store can change over time.

Price and availability matter more in 2026
The Galaxy S24 Ultra launched at approximately $1,299.99 for 256GB, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max started at $1,199 for 256GB in the US. Those launch figures are useful for context, but they are not a reason to pay anything close to them now. Samsung currently marks the S24 Ultra sold out on its US product page. Apple’s lineup changes, so check its store rather than assuming the 16 Pro Max is still sold directly.
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Older flagship inventory may appear through carriers, authorized retailers, certified-refurbished programs, and private sellers. Compare like with like: storage size, condition, carrier lock, warranty, return period, and any trade-in or plan requirements. A marketplace listing described as “new” may be imported or activated, and an international model can differ in modem bands, SIM setup, processor, warranty, or regional software features.
- For an iPhone: inspect Battery Health, Parts and Service History, Activation Lock status, carrier lock, and AppleCare eligibility. A worn battery can erase much of the appeal of a long-endurance phone.
- For a Galaxy: confirm the exact model and regional variant, IMEI and carrier compatibility, S Pen operation, display condition, and whether Knox or enterprise management prevents normal use.
- For either: ask about repairs and water exposure. A prior repair can compromise water resistance, and neither titanium frame makes the screen or camera damage-proof.
Compare the total cost with a newer-generation equivalent before buying. A large discount can make an older flagship sensible; a small gap may not compensate for older hardware or a shorter remaining support horizon.
Design, size, and handling
Both phones use titanium frames, USB-C ports, and IP68 water- and dust-resistance ratings. Their large bodies are not compact-phone alternatives, and a case adds meaningful bulk to either.

The Galaxy is a little wider and heavier; the iPhone is marginally taller but lighter. The S24 Ultra’s squarer shape can feel more substantial and less comfortable one-handed. The iPhone’s size and camera bump also make it a two-handed device for many people. These differences are more noticeable with a protective case.
Display: larger diagonal on iPhone, sharper image on Galaxy
The iPhone has a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz and an always-on display. Apple specifies up to 2,000 nits outdoor peak brightness and 1,000 nits typical maximum brightness. The Galaxy has a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, QHD+ resolution, and an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate; Samsung specifies peak brightness up to 2,600 nits and Vision Booster for outdoor viewing.

The iPhone is slightly larger diagonally, but the Galaxy’s higher native resolution makes text and fine detail sharper. That can help when reading dense documents, using split-screen apps, or writing with the S Pen. Both provide smooth scrolling. Manufacturer peak-brightness figures are not directly comparable measurements: actual visibility depends on test conditions, automatic brightness, content, and outdoor light.
Performance and gaming
The iPhone uses Apple’s A18 Pro; the US Galaxy S24 Ultra and many regional versions use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. Both remain capable of demanding games, photo editing, and multitasking, but no single chip wins every task.
The iPhone is often the stronger choice for high-end gaming optimization and video workflows, and its performance can be very consistent in supported apps. The Galaxy’s multitasking tools and greater RAM capacity can be useful for keeping several apps in play, but RAM figures do not translate directly across Android and iOS. Benchmark scores and sustained speed vary with software updates, thermal conditions, game settings, and test methodology.
Cameras: Galaxy for reach, iPhone for consistency
The hardware makes the trade-off clear. The iPhone has a 48MP Fusion main camera, 48MP ultrawide, and 12MP 5x telephoto, along with sensor-shift optical image stabilization on the main camera. Apple lists digital zoom up to 25x. The Galaxy has a 200MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide, and separate 10MP 3x and 50MP 5x telephoto cameras. Samsung also offers 2x and 10x modes using sensor cropping and computational processing; its 100x Space Zoom is computational, not 100x optical zoom.
| Photo use | Advantage | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Distant subjects and focal-length choice | Galaxy S24 Ultra | Separate 3x and 5x telephoto cameras give more options, with further processed zoom modes. |
| Portraits at medium distance | Galaxy S24 Ultra for many users | The dedicated 3x lens can be more useful than jumping to a 5x camera. |
| Point-and-shoot consistency and motion | Often iPhone 16 Pro Max | Its predictable color and motion handling are a practical strength, though results vary by scene. |
| Video-led capture | iPhone 16 Pro Max | Its recording formats and creator workflow are stronger reasons to choose it than megapixel counts. |
The Galaxy’s 200MP figure does not guarantee better photographs. Focus behavior, shutter lag, movement, light, processing, and the final image size matter more than the number printed on the camera spec sheet. The iPhone’s 5x telephoto is not automatically best at every intermediate distance either; Samsung’s 3x camera can be more useful for portraits and nearer subjects. Compare like-for-like output sizes and similar exposure, focus, HDR, and software versions rather than matching zoom labels alone.

- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
- Titanium frame and reinforced edges provide a premium, durable build, reducing weight compared to stainless steel while enhancing grip and making the phone easier to handle during long sessions of video recording, gaming, or editing.
- Camera system designed for versatility and precision, including ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with improved low-light and macro capabilities, giving photographers and creators a broader range of expressive tools while maintaining sharp details across the frame.
- Advanced Action button offers customizable shortcuts, allowing quick access to features like capturing photos, launching apps, controlling accessibility tools, or activating automation tasks without interrupting your workflow.
- Audio and video performance optimized for creators, with spatial audio, improved microphones, and stabilized video recording, providing professional-quality sound and smooth footage whether recording content, streaming, or joining video calls.
Video: the iPhone’s clearest advantage
The iPhone 16 Pro Max supports 4K Dolby Vision recording, including up to 120 fps in supported modes, plus ProRes and Log options. These formats can support a more advanced editing workflow, but high-frame-rate 4K and ProRes consume storage quickly. The phone starts at 256GB; creators should consider storage needs and compatible external USB-C storage workflows.
Recommended Free Tools
The Galaxy offers high-resolution recording, extensive camera controls, zoom flexibility while filming, and Pro video controls. It may suit someone who values manual options and easier file movement in Android’s file-management environment. For regular video creation, editing on a Mac, or predictable codec and color workflows, the iPhone is the safer default. Recording options depend on mode and settings, and videos should not be compared as if HDR and SDR footage were equivalent.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 16 Pro Max for up to 33 hours of video playback. That is an official playback estimate, not a promise of that much mixed-use screen time. Independent endurance results also depend on brightness, cellular reception, refresh settings, gaming, and background activity.
The Galaxy’s typical battery capacity is 5,000mAh, and it supports up to 45W wired charging with a suitable charger; Samsung sells the 45W charger separately. The iPhone generally has the stronger endurance reputation, while the Galaxy’s higher rated wired charging support is useful when a quick top-up matters. A wattage rating is not a guaranteed time-to-full: charger, cable, temperature, battery level, and software controls affect actual charging. Standard US retail packages for both do not include a wall charger.
For a used phone, battery condition is central. iOS provides a straightforward maximum-capacity figure for iPhone battery health; Samsung does not expose the same simple percentage-based workflow on the S24 Ultra. A used Galaxy still needs a battery-condition check through the seller or an appropriate diagnostic service.

Software, AI, and support
The iPhone belongs to the iOS 18 generation and supports Apple Intelligence features subject to device, language, region, and software requirements. The Galaxy runs Samsung One UI on Android and includes Galaxy AI tools such as Circle to Search, Note Assist, Chat Assist, and image-related features, subject to availability and software.
Samsung announced seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the Galaxy S24 series. That is Samsung’s announced policy, not a guarantee that every future AI feature will be available on this model. AI tools can depend on region, language, account, subscription policy, cloud availability, and hardware capability. Apple does not present a matching fixed seven-year iPhone support promise; check the software version and feature availability actually offered for each device when buying.
S Pen, DeX, and everyday productivity
The S24 Ultra’s built-in S Pen is a real differentiator if you annotate PDFs, sign documents, take handwritten notes, or want precise input without carrying a separate stylus. Samsung DeX and multi-window tools can also support desktop-style workflows, while Android offers more conventional file access and customization.
The iPhone is better suited to people whose productivity is already organized around Mac, iPad, iCloud, AirDrop, and Apple apps. It can be a more uniform experience, but it does not replace the Galaxy’s integrated pen or DeX. If you depend on Samsung Notes, split-screen habits, custom launchers, or sideloading, treat those as workflows to migrate—not minor spec differences.

Both phones use USB-C, but accessory and cellular details vary by model and region. Check an imported device’s cellular bands, physical SIM or eSIM arrangement, warranty, and regional emergency features before purchase. A US model and an international model may not behave identically for mobile networks or software features.
Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Choose based on the devices and services you already use:
- Apple setup: Apple Watch works with iPhone, not Galaxy. Mac, iPad, AirPods, iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop, and iCloud integration are strongest when the phone is an iPhone. Moving to Galaxy can complicate iMessage registration, watch use, photo-library organization, health data, app purchases, subscriptions, and MagSafe accessory habits.
- Samsung/Android setup: Galaxy Watch integration is primarily designed for Android and is strongest with Galaxy phones. Galaxy Buds, Google services, Windows workflows, file handling, and Samsung accounts may suit the S24 Ultra better. Moving to iPhone can mean losing S Pen notes, Samsung Notes, DeX, custom launchers, sideloading, or some Galaxy Watch functionality.
- Cross-platform accessories: AirPods can work with Android and Galaxy Buds with iPhone, but platform-specific features and integrations may be reduced.
Which phone should you choose?
Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max if
- You already use an Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, or Apple services daily.
- You record a lot of video or need ProRes, Log, or a Mac-centered editing workflow.
- You value strong endurance, consistent point-and-shoot results, and demanding iOS games.
- You prefer a less customizable but more uniform interface.
Choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra if
- You want an integrated stylus, DeX, split-screen apps, or more flexible file handling.
- You regularly photograph distant subjects or want dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras.
- You prioritize QHD+ resolution, Android customization, or faster rated wired charging.
- You already use Galaxy accessories or Samsung and Google workflows.
Consider a newer model or a different size if
- You want the latest modem, camera, processor, or AI hardware, or either older phone is priced close to a current successor.
- You need a compact phone, expandable storage, a replaceable battery, or a rugged device.
- You require guaranteed access to a particular AI feature or charging speed.
What to inspect before buying used or refurbished
iPhone 16 Pro Max
- Check Battery Health, Parts and Service History, display warnings, Face ID, cameras, USB-C port, Camera Control, and Action button.
- Confirm Activation Lock is off, the phone is not carrier locked, eSIM activation works with your carrier, and AppleCare eligibility is clear.
Galaxy S24 Ultra
- Test the S Pen, inspect the OLED for burn-in or dead zones, check camera lenses and the USB-C port, and verify the exact model, IMEI, and carrier compatibility.
- Ask whether the phone is subject to Knox or enterprise management, and establish battery condition and repair history. Do not assume a repaired phone remains water-resistant.
For either device, compare the return window, warranty, cosmetic grade, accessories, and battery guarantee. Certified-refurbished stock can be easier to evaluate than an unknown marketplace listing, but terms vary by seller and program.
Verdict
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the better fit for video creators, Apple users, and buyers who value consistent performance and endurance. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the better fit for zoom photography, pen input, multitasking, and Android control. In August 2026, buy either only if the specific unit’s price, condition, support horizon, and availability make sense against newer alternatives.
