If some Messages photos on a new iPhone 14 appear as question marks or are missing, the icon alone does not identify the cause. After a phone transfer or iOS update, Messages may still be indexing its data; Apple says that can take up to a few days. Keep the iPhone locked and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet while it catches up. If the photos remain missing, check Messages in iCloud and the other receiving conditions below.
Why photos may be missing after moving to a new iPhone
After an iPhone transfer or software update, Messages may need time to index saved conversations and their shared links, photos, and other media. Apple says the process can finish quickly or take up to a few days, depending on background tasks and the amount of Messages data. Keeping the iPhone locked and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet can help indexing finish sooner. Apple Support explains what to do if messages are missing after setting up a new device.
Apple’s guidance addresses missing media and indexing, but does not define the specific question mark icon. A matching user discussion describes photos appearing as question marks on a new iPhone 14, but that individual report does not establish a diagnosis or a verified fix. The icon should therefore be treated as a symptom, not proof of a particular iCloud or transfer problem.

Give Messages time to index
If the issue began after a transfer or update, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and leave it locked when practical. Allow time for indexing; Apple says it may take up to a few days.

Check Messages in iCloud
On the new iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Messages and check that Messages syncing is enabled. Apple says Messages in iCloud keeps message history up to date across devices signed in to the same Apple Account when the feature is enabled on those devices. Restart indexing if the photos are still missing
If you used iCloud and the media remains missing after some time, Apple’s instructions are to go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Messages, turn Use on this iPhone off, then turn it on again. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that an attachment will return.

Check storage and the connection
Make sure the iPhone has available device storage and a working internet connection. Apple lists these as general checks for Messages photo and video problems; neither is established as the specific cause of the question mark icon. See Apple’s guidance for sending and receiving photos in Messages.

Consider SMS/MMS limits
If the affected conversation is SMS/MMS rather than iMessage, the carrier may limit attachment size. Larger files can take longer to send or may be compressed. Contact the carrier if the issue appears limited to SMS/MMS attachments.

When to contact Apple Support
If the photos are still unavailable after these checks, contact Apple Support. Have the iOS version, the transfer or update timing, whether the images were sent or received, when the question mark first appeared, and whether the photos open on another device ready. Those details can help narrow down whether the issue is limited to this iPhone or the message attachment itself.
