You can transfer photos and videos from an iPad to a connected flash drive either by exporting items from Photos or by copying files in Files. Use Photos when you want to export selected items from your photo library; use Files when the photos are already accessible as files. The drive must connect to your iPad and use a supported format and partition layout.
Choose how to transfer the photos
- Photos: Select items in the Photos app and export their unmodified originals to the drive. This is the direct route for items in your Photos library.
- Files: Browse files in Files or another supported app, then copy the desired photo files to the connected drive.
Export photos from the Photos app
- Connect the flash drive to the iPad. Depending on the iPad’s port and the drive’s connector, you may need a compatible cable or adapter.
- Open Photos and select the photos or videos you want to transfer.
- Tap Share, then tap Export Unmodified Original.
- Under Locations, select the flash drive and tap Save.
Apple says this option exports the unmodified originals, including for edited photos and videos. If an item is in the Hidden album and that album is locked, unlock the album first in Settings > Apps > Photos. Menu labels may vary by iPadOS version. Apple’s Photos guide
Copy photo files with Files
- Connect the flash drive to the iPad.
- Open Files and look for the drive under Locations.
- Find the photo files in Files or another supported app, then use the app’s copy controls to copy them to the drive.
Apple requires an external storage device to have a single data partition and use a supported format: APFS, encrypted APFS, Mac OS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT. Apple says Files can reformat an external drive on USB-C iPad models. Reformatting erases the drive, so back up any files you need before proceeding. Apple’s external-storage guide
Check the connection and drive if it does not appear
- Check the connector: Confirm the drive can connect to the iPad’s charging port. A cable or adapter may be needed for your particular iPad and drive.
- Check the drive format and partition: The drive needs one data partition and a format supported by iPadOS, listed above.
- Check power needs: Apple notes that external hard drives often require their own power source. With a Lightning iPad, a Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter can be connected to a USB power adapter when additional power is needed.
- Reseat the connection: If the drive is not listed in Files, disconnect and reconnect it, then check the format, partition layout, and power setup.
These checks follow Apple’s stated connection and storage requirements; they are not a guarantee that every drive or adapter combination will work. Apple’s external-storage guide
