Choose the iPad mini if reading or gaming on a larger screen matters most and you are willing to carry a second device. Choose the iPhone 17 if you want one lighter, pocketable device for calls, cellular service, and travel photos. Which is better for reading?
Choose the iPad mini for more screen area
The mini’s 8.3-inch display gives text, pages, and reading apps more room than the iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch display. That larger format is the clearest reason to choose it for long reading sessions, especially if you prefer seeing more content at once.
Choose the iPhone for pocketable reading

Pick by screen preference, not chip name

Which is better for travel?
Take the iPhone if you want one device
At 177 g, the iPhone 17 is substantially lighter than either iPad mini configuration, and it combines phone functions, cellular service, and cameras. For a traveler who wants one device for communication and everyday travel tasks, it is the stronger single-device choice. Apple lists an IP68 rating for the iPhone 17; that is a device specification, not a reason to treat it as waterproof.
Bring the mini as a second device for screen time
The iPad mini makes sense as a travel companion when a larger screen for books or games is worth the extra weight and bag space. The Wi-Fi + Cellular model adds mobile connectivity and GPS/GNSS according to Apple’s specifications, but it remains a tablet rather than a replacement for phone functions.

- Choose the iPad mini if reading or gaming on a larger display is your main priority, or if you want optional Pencil input for notes or drawing.
