If your iPhone is draining faster than usual after updating to iOS 27, the first step is to find out why, not to start turning features off. Apple’s official guidance does not confirm an iOS 27-wide battery bug, and it does not list affected models. What it does describe is a set of common causes that the Battery screen can help you tell apart: unfinished update work running in the background, apps active while you are not using them, weak cellular signal, high brightness, and an aging battery. Work through them in that order and most cases become clear within a few minutes.
What is and is not established about iOS 27 battery drain
Apple’s support article “If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly,” published July 20, 2026, says that even though you can use a device immediately after an update, “certain tasks related to the update continue in the background and may affect battery life and thermal performance.” It adds: “If you notice that your battery life has decreased after updating your device, wait a few days and then check again.” (Apple Support)
That is the extent of the official statement. It explains a temporary, update-related cause. It does not say how long that background work lasts for any given device, and it does not establish that iOS 27 itself has reduced battery capacity or runtime for every iPhone. Reports of heavy drain on social media and in search results are not evidence of a systemwide defect. If the problem persists well after the update has settled, the causes below are the ones to test.
Step-by-step: diagnose before you change settings
- Check for an update-related Insight. Open Settings > Battery. If an “Ongoing iOS Update” Insight appears, background update work is probably still running. Apple’s advice is to wait a few days and then compare usage again. Do not disable apps or features yet.
- Find the biggest consumer. Scroll to Daily Usage and then App and System Activity Usage. Tap an app or system activity to see its details.
- Read the label on each entry. A Background Activity label means most of that app’s battery use happened while it was not on screen. A No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal label points to searching for a signal.
- Make one change that matches the evidence. Use the table below to choose the adjustment.
- Check battery condition if the drain continues. Use the Battery Health path for your model, described later in this article.
Matching the cause to the Battery screen

Only the first and last rows point to a time-limited or hardware cause. The middle four are settings and habits you can change immediately. Several can be true at once, so review each row rather than stopping at the first match.

Temporary power saving with Low Power Mode
When you need more runtime today, turn on Low Power Mode from Settings > Battery > Power Mode, or from Control Center. It limits or disables features including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. Apple says it turns off automatically after the phone is charged above 80 percent.
Think of Low Power Mode as a convenience setting with tradeoffs, not a repair. Background sync is reduced while it is on, so messages and mail may arrive later. It also does not fix a worn battery or explain which app is responsible. Once you have identified the cause, switch it off and apply the targeted change instead.

Checking battery condition
Apple says battery capacity and lifespan depend on how the device is used and which features are enabled. If the drain continues after the update settles and your usage data shows nothing unusual, open Battery Health and read the status. The path depends on your model:

If the screen reports Service, Apple advises considering a battery replacement and following the on-screen instructions. A charger, battery case, or power bank cannot restore a degraded battery’s capacity, so these accessories will not fix this cause. Battery service is model-specific, so confirm availability for your device with Apple or an authorized provider before you plan around it.

When to wait and when to act
- Wait if the Battery screen shows an Ongoing iOS Update Insight and the update was recent.
- Act on the app if one app dominates usage with a Background Activity label.
- Act on the signal if No Mobile Coverage or Low Signal appears in the usage details.
- Act on the battery if Battery Health shows Service, or if the drain persists with no other cause identified after the update has had time to settle.

Apple’s own guidance does not offer a fixed deadline for post-update work to finish. Use the Battery screen as the timer: when the Ongoing iOS Update Insight is gone and the usage list looks normal, the update work has most likely finished.
