Yes—an iPhone can install an available iOS update overnight if Automatically Install is on, the phone is charging, and it is connected to Wi-Fi. Apple says it notifies you before installation. The separate Automatically Download option downloads an update for you to install later; it does not schedule installation.
What the two Automatic Updates switches do
Find them at Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple’s iOS 27 instructions distinguish automatic installation from downloading an update in advance. The available options and labels can vary by device or region.

Apple describes Automatically Download as an option shown when Automatically Install is off. Its instructions do not promise a particular installation hour or date, or that every eligible update will install on the first night.
How to prevent automatic installation but keep downloads on
- Open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
- Turn off Automatically Install.
- If it is available, turn on Automatically Download to let the phone download an update for later.
- When you are ready to review and install, return to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the action shown on your iPhone.
This leaves installation under your control. When an update has already downloaded, Apple says the Software Update screen may offer Update Now or Update Tonight. Choose the option that suits you; Update Tonight is an offered choice, not a guaranteed schedule for all updates.

How to check whether your iPhone is set to update overnight
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
- Check whether Automatically Install is on. If it is, Apple’s documented behavior is overnight installation when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, with a notification beforehand.
- If you want to choose the installation time yourself, turn off Automatically Install and decide whether to use Automatically Download.
System Files and Background Security Improvements are separate
These controls are not the same as the switches for full iOS updates. Apple says system-file updates can download and install automatically to improve iPhone features without changing the iOS version. Apple’s guide describes a separate System Files control under Automatic Updates.
Background Security Improvements are also separate. Their installation control is at Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. Apple says these improvements add protection between software updates. In rare cases of compatibility problems, Apple may temporarily remove an improvement and include it in a future software update. Turning off automatic installation of full iOS updates should not be assumed to turn off either separate control.

What can vary
Apple’s support guidance accessed October 7, 2026, includes iOS 27-specific instructions. Menu labels, available options, eligible updates, and device support can change; Apple also notes that features and availability may vary by device, country, or region. Check the options displayed on your iPhone for the current choices. Apple does not specify a guaranteed overnight hour or guarantee that every eligible update will install automatically.
