iOS 26 features include Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign, stronger call and message screening, screenshot-based Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, improved Photos and Camera apps, smarter Maps, new CarPlay tools, accessibility upgrades, and battery controls. iPhone 11 and newer models can install iOS 26, but Apple Intelligence features generally require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer equivalent.
iOS 26 is more than a visual refresh. Liquid Glass changes the appearance and behavior of system controls, while practical updates target interruptions, travel, communication, battery management, accessibility, gaming, and everyday Apple apps. Availability is not uniform: some features require Apple Intelligence hardware, iPhone 14 or newer, supported languages, a compatible vehicle, a carrier, an accessory, or a particular country.

Apple’s original announcement describes the major iOS 26 changes, while Apple’s iOS 26 support documentation covers later point releases such as iOS 26.6. Those later updates refine the experience and add bug fixes, security updates, and Spotlight-index optimization, so the exact feature set can differ between the original release and the latest 26.x build.

- iOS 26 supports iPhone 11 and newer models plus the second-generation iPhone SE and later, but iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max are excluded.
- Apple Intelligence features generally require an A17 Pro chip or later, which includes the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer supported generations.
- Liquid Glass is iOS 26’s biggest visual change, but the redesign does not automatically make an iPhone faster or improve battery life.
- Call screening, Messages filtering, Maps route intelligence, battery information, Photos navigation, and Safari controls can be useful even when an iPhone does not support Apple Intelligence.
- Live Translation, satellite Messages, Digital ID, CarPlay features, and order tracking all have additional language, region, hardware, carrier, vehicle, or message-format limitations.
What are the 20 most important iOS 26 features?
The 20 most consequential iOS 26 updates span five areas: interface design, Apple Intelligence, communication, everyday apps, and specialized experiences such as CarPlay, gaming, and accessibility. The list below separates broadly available iOS 26 features from features that depend on newer hardware or regional support.
#1 Best Overall

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
1. What does Liquid Glass change in iOS 26?
Liquid Glass is iOS 26’s systemwide translucent interface material. Apple applies the new visual language to controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, the Lock Screen, and other system interfaces. Transparency, reflections, animated controls, and reshaped tab bars make the software look substantially different from iOS 18 or iOS 19.
Liquid Glass is primarily a visual and interaction redesign, not a performance feature. The redesigned controls can make some interfaces feel lighter and less cluttered, but transparency can also affect legibility for some users. Later iOS 26 updates added a tinted Liquid Glass appearance option, giving users an alternative to the default look. Exact labels can vary by point release and language; check the Appearance or personalization controls on the installed build.
A practical test is to use the iPhone normally for a day before deciding whether the redesign helps. Users who depend on high contrast, larger text, reduced motion, or a very predictable control layout should review the accessibility settings rather than assuming the default appearance will be comfortable. Apple’s iOS 26 overview explains the design direction, and Apple’s detailed iOS 26 feature document lists the related customization changes.
2. How can you customize the iOS 26 Home Screen and Lock Screen?
iOS 26 adds clear, light, dark, and tinted icon styles, matching widget treatments, and a more adaptive Lock Screen. The Lock Screen clock can adjust its placement to fit the available space in a wallpaper, while the wallpaper subject, clock, widgets, and notifications interact more closely.
To inspect the options, long-press the Lock Screen or Home Screen and choose Customize. Select the available icon or widget appearance, then check whether the clock placement works with the selected wallpaper. The exact menu names may change between iOS 26 point releases, so a control shown in an early review may not have the same label on iOS 26.6.
3. What are Spatial Scenes in iOS 26 Photos?
Spatial Scenes turn some ordinary 2D photos into images with a 3D-like effect that responds to iPhone movement. Apple says the effect uses computer vision and the Neural Engine to create the scene.
Portraits, travel photos, and images with a clearly separated foreground and background usually make the most convincing candidates. Spatial Scenes are not the same as capturing a native stereoscopic spatial photo: iOS 26 is generating an effect from an existing image, so results depend heavily on composition. Some older supported iPhones may also have hardware restrictions. Apple describes the feature in its iOS 26 announcement and feature list.
4. Why is the Camera app simpler in iOS 26?
The iOS 26 Camera app streamlines the shooting interface so the viewfinder has fewer competing controls. The change is intended to improve discoverability and keep attention on the scene; it does not introduce a new camera sensor or automatically improve image quality.
Users who regularly change secondary controls may need to learn where those settings moved. The simplified layout is therefore a usability change with a trade-off: casual photographers may find it clearer, while experienced users may initially take longer to reach less frequently used controls. Apple’s announcement covers the redesigned Camera experience at a high level.
5. How does Photos navigation improve in iOS 26?
Photos separates the main Library timeline from Collections more clearly. Open Photos and switch between Library and Collections to move between the full photo timeline and grouped content such as albums, trips, people, and other categories.
The change addresses the navigational complexity many users experienced with the previous Photos redesign. Users who mainly want a chronological view can stay in Library, while Collections provides a more direct route to grouped content instead of requiring extensive scrolling. Apple explains the Photos changes in its iOS 26 feature announcement.

Open Safari, use the page or tab-layout menu, and choose the arrangement that best fits one-handed use and screen visibility. The current control name can vary by build. Bottom is generally the most natural choice for reachability, while Top may feel more familiar to users who prefer the traditional browser layout.
7. Does Safari improve privacy and web apps in iOS 26?
Safari extends Advanced Fingerprinting Protection beyond Private Browsing and lets users add any webpage to the Home Screen as a full-screen web app. The protection is designed to make it harder for websites to identify a browser through a distinctive combination of device and software details.
A web app launched from Add to Home Screen can appear full-screen and in the App Switcher, making a website feel more like an installed app. A web app may still lack native push notifications, offline support, account integration, or the full feature set of an App Store app. Safari’s iOS 26 feature document describes both changes.

8. How does Visual Intelligence work from screenshots?
Visual Intelligence can analyze a screenshot instead of requiring a live camera view. Depending on the content and available services, users can search visually with Google or supported third-party services, select an object, translate or summarize text, ask ChatGPT about visible content, or extract a date and create a Calendar event.
- Capture a screenshot with the normal iPhone hardware-button shortcut.
- Open the screenshot preview or screenshot interface.
- Select the Visual Intelligence control.
- Choose visual search, text interaction, translation, Calendar extraction, or ChatGPT.
Visual Intelligence is an Apple Intelligence feature. An iPhone can support iOS 26 without supporting Visual Intelligence, because Apple Intelligence generally requires an A17 Pro chip or later along with supported language and regional settings. AI-generated interpretations can also be incomplete or incorrect, so verify extracted dates, names, addresses, and other consequential information. Apple lists the screenshot workflow in its iOS 26 feature document.
9. How does Live Translation work in Phone, FaceTime, and Messages?
Live Translation can translate conversations and messages in Phone, FaceTime, and Messages. In Messages, incoming texts and replies can be translated; in calls, users generally enable translation from the call controls and select a language.
Live Translation is not universal translation for every language or conversation. Availability depends on supported languages, regions, and Apple Intelligence-capable hardware, and behavior can differ between a phone call, FaceTime conversation, and text exchange. Accents, background noise, slang, and technical vocabulary can reduce accuracy. Users should confirm important names, figures, instructions, and appointments rather than treating an AI translation as authoritative.

The official iOS 26 feature list provides the relevant availability qualifications.
10. How do Unknown Callers filtering and call screening work?
iOS 26 can separate or screen calls from unknown numbers so users receive fewer unexpected interruptions. Users can review unknown callers and approve a number so future calls or messages behave normally.
To check the control, open Settings → Apps → Phone and look for the unknown-caller screening or filtering option. Regional builds may use different wording. Screening is useful for reducing spam, but aggressive filtering can also catch legitimate calls from doctors, delivery drivers, schools, employers, or businesses. Check the filtered list regularly, especially when expecting an unfamiliar number.
11. What do Hold Assist and voicemail summaries do?
Hold Assist can help detect when a person returns to a call, while Apple Intelligence can produce inline voicemail summaries. These features are designed to reduce the time spent listening to hold music or transcribing routine voicemails.
Call behavior depends on the carrier, region, and whether the system can distinguish hold music, recorded messages, and a human voice. A voicemail summary may omit context or misunderstand a name, number, or request, so listen to the original message before acting on important information. Apple includes these call-handling tools in its iOS 26 announcement.

12. Which Messages features are new in iOS 26?
Messages adds screening and organization tools as well as group and conversation improvements. Unknown senders can be screened, while Promotions and Transactions categories help separate commercial messages from regular conversations.
Other changes include group typing indicators, polls, conversation backgrounds, improved natural-language search, better conversation details, partial text selection within a message bubble, and draft filtering. Apple Intelligence can help suggest polls, but automatic suggestions are not guaranteed for every group or message.
Filtering can delay visibility of legitimate one-time codes, receipts, or delivery notices. Conversation backgrounds may also reduce readability for some users. Treat Messages filtering as an inbox-management tool, not as a perfect spam detector. Apple’s detailed feature list covers the individual Messages changes.

13. How does Maps learn routes and visited places?
Maps can learn frequently traveled routes, show commute previews and delay alerts, suggest alternatives before navigation begins, and maintain a searchable record of visited places. Natural-language searches can also help find places matching a description, such as cafés with free Wi-Fi.
Apple describes the visited-place experience as privacy-oriented and removable, and says Apple cannot access that particular visited-place data. That claim should not be expanded into saying Maps stores no location data. Review and remove entries from the relevant Maps settings if the visited-place history is not useful.
14. What does Apple Music add in iOS 26?
Apple Music adds translated lyrics, Music Pins, richer Replay information, and animated album artwork integrated with the Liquid Glass design. Lyrics translation is available from the Now Playing view, while Music Pins place favorite music at the top of the library.
Replay gains month-by-month and year-end insights. Availability can depend on an Apple Music subscription and supported catalog metadata, so not every song will necessarily have translated lyrics or identical Replay information. Apple describes these changes in its iOS 26 feature document.
15. Can Wallet create a Digital ID from a passport?
Wallet can create a passport-based Digital ID for domestic TSA checkpoints and some identity-verification situations. Wallet also improves boarding passes with flight and airport information, links into airline apps, and Live Activities sharing.
Digital ID is geographically limited and does not replace a physical passport or government-issued identification everywhere. Acceptance depends on participating authorities and merchants, so travelers should carry the identification required for the destination and journey. A digital identity in Wallet should never be described as a universally accepted digital passport.
16. How does Wallet track orders automatically?
Wallet can use Apple Intelligence to identify merchant and carrier emails and assemble order details, shipment information, delivery progress, and notifications. The feature is useful when a retailer or carrier sends conventional, recognizable email messages.
Wallet may miss orders from unsupported merchants or carriers, forwarded emails, encrypted messages, or poorly formatted and nonstandard messages. Do not rely on Wallet as the only source for a high-value or time-sensitive delivery; retain the retailer’s order confirmation and carrier tracking information.

17. What new features does CarPlay receive?
iOS 26 adds CarPlay widgets, Live Activities, compact incoming-call controls, updated Liquid Glass styling, Tapbacks, pinned conversations, and additional display and zoom behavior in supported vehicles. The compact call interface is intended to keep navigation visible while a call arrives.

Installing iOS 26 does not guarantee that every vehicle exposes every CarPlay feature. Automaker hardware, screen layout, vehicle software, app support, and head-unit capabilities remain decisive. Check compatibility by vehicle make, model, year, and infotainment version before buying a car or aftermarket receiver. Apple’s CarPlay information provides the official starting point.
18. What is the Apple Games app?
Apple Games is a central hub for games downloaded from the App Store, Apple Arcade titles, recommendations, events, challenges, friends’ activity, controller support, and a unified game library. Apple Games is a discovery and library app, not a separate game store independent of the App Store.
Apple’s feature document says Apple Arcade includes more than 200 games without ads or in-app purchases, although the catalog and subscription terms can change. A controller is optional: touch-focused games do not require one, while supported action or console-style games may benefit from a physical controller. Apple’s Apple Arcade page is the appropriate place to confirm the current catalog and terms.
19. Which accessibility features does iOS 26 add?
iOS 26 makes accessibility more visible with Accessibility Reader, Braille Access, and Accessibility Nutrition Labels in App Store listings. The update also surfaces information about VoiceOver, Voice Control, captions, contrast, text size, and motion support.
Accessibility Reader provides a systemwide reading mode, while Braille Access works with connected braille displays. App Store accessibility labels can help users compare apps, but the labels describe developer-reported capabilities and are not a guarantee of quality for every user. Expanded parental and app-content information also gives families more detail about app experiences. Apple’s iOS 26 App Store overview provides additional context.
20. Which smaller iOS 26 changes have the biggest practical value?
Battery, Notes, Reminders, and Shortcuts gain modest-looking features that can save time during ordinary tasks. These changes are less visually dramatic than Liquid Glass but may matter more during daily use.
Battery management
The redesigned Battery interface includes estimated charging time, more information about usage patterns and power-hungry apps, and Adaptive Power for high-use days. Adaptive Power can automatically make power-saving adjustments when demand is high. Battery-saving automation may trade background activity or performance for endurance, so Adaptive Power is not a guaranteed amount of extra battery life.
Notes
Notes can import and export Markdown, and its toolbar adapts to the task being performed. Markdown support is particularly useful for moving structured notes between compatible apps without manually reformatting every heading or list.
Reminders
Apple Intelligence can suggest reminders and grocery items from visible content such as recipes, emails, websites, and meeting notes. Review the suggestions before saving them because extracted dates, quantities, or task descriptions can be wrong.
Shortcuts
Shortcuts gains intelligent actions that can summarize text, create images, compare transcriptions, extract information from PDFs, and use Apple Intelligence models in automations. These capabilities are useful for repeatable workflows, but an automation that acts on extracted information should include a review step before sending, deleting, purchasing, or scheduling anything.
Apple’s full iOS 26 feature document lists the Battery, Notes, Reminders, and Shortcuts changes.
Which iPhones support iOS 26?
iOS 26 supports iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 families, and iPhone SE models from the second generation onward. Newer iPhone models released after the original iOS 26 launch are also supported. The iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max are not supported.

iOS 26 compatibility does not mean that every iPhone receives every feature. Independent compatibility coverage from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide provides additional model context, but Apple’s current software update screen and feature documentation should take priority for a particular device and region.
How should you install iOS 26 safely?
Back up the iPhone, connect it to Wi-Fi and power, verify storage and compatibility, then open Settings → General → Software Update. The update offered depends on the iPhone model, region, current software version, and Apple’s rollout and signing status.
- Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer.
- Confirm that the iPhone has enough free storage for the update.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the iPhone or connect it to power.
- Check that the model supports iOS 26.
- If Apple Intelligence is important, confirm the device, language, and region requirements.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update and follow the displayed instructions.
Why is an iOS 26 feature missing?
A missing iOS 26 feature is usually explained by the iPhone model, installed point release, Apple Intelligence status, language, region, app, carrier, vehicle, or accessory. Check the following in order:
- Confirm the iPhone model.
- Install the latest available iOS 26 point release for that model.
- Check whether Apple Intelligence is enabled and supported.
- Review the device and Siri language settings.
- Check regional availability.
- Update the required Apple or third-party app.
- Check carrier, vehicle, AirPods, or other accessory compatibility.
- Confirm that the feature is not limited to a later 26.x release or a beta.
Should you update to iOS 26 immediately?
Update promptly if you want call and message screening, improved Maps commuting tools, battery diagnostics, accessibility features, Notes or Shortcuts workflows, or Apple Intelligence features on compatible hardware. Users who rely on CarPlay should first confirm that their vehicle supports the relevant additions.
Waiting for a later maintenance release can be sensible if a highly stable workflow matters more than new features, if you dislike major interface changes, or if you use an older supported iPhone close to the minimum requirements. Users who depend heavily on Camera, screenshots, or accessibility controls may also want time to test the changed workflows. Tom’s Guide found iOS 26 worthwhile overall but noted a learning curve and rough edges around Liquid Glass; that is reviewer experience, not a universal measurement.
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s support documentation lists iOS 26.6 as a maintenance update with bug fixes, security updates, and Spotlight-index optimization. Installing the latest compatible maintenance release is generally a more informed choice than judging the entire iOS 26 generation by the original launch build, but users with mission-critical apps should still check those apps’ compatibility first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an iPhone 11 run iOS 26?
Yes. iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max support iOS 26. iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max do not support iOS 26, and an iPhone 11 does not support every Apple Intelligence feature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which iPhones get Apple Intelligence in iOS 26?
Apple Intelligence generally requires an A17 Pro chip or later, including the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and newer supported iPhone generations. Language, region, and individual feature requirements can also affect availability.
Is Liquid Glass available on every iOS 26-compatible iPhone?
Liquid Glass is part of the iOS 26 interface for supported iPhones, but the visual redesign does not guarantee improved speed or battery life. Later iOS 26 releases also added a tinted appearance option, with exact labels varying by build and language.
Does iOS 26 Live Translation work with every language?
No. Live Translation depends on supported languages, regions, compatible Apple Intelligence hardware, and the communication app being used. Translation quality can also decline with accents, background noise, slang, or technical language.
Does iOS 26 Digital ID replace a passport?
No. A passport-based Digital ID in Wallet is limited to supported domestic TSA checkpoints and some identity-verification situations. Digital ID availability and acceptance vary by country and participating authority, and travelers may still need physical identification.
The Bottom Line
iOS 26 is a substantial iPhone update, but its value depends on the device. Every supported iPhone receives the Liquid Glass redesign and many practical app, privacy, communication, battery, and accessibility changes. Apple Intelligence features such as screenshot analysis, Live Translation, voicemail summaries, intelligent Reminders, and order tracking generally require an A17 Pro-class iPhone or newer. Update for the features that solve a real problem for you, and evaluate filtering, translation, AI summaries, and vehicle-dependent CarPlay features with their limitations in mind.
