Call Screening in iOS 26 can make unknown callers identify themselves before your iPhone rings, giving you a moment to decide whether to answer. It is a useful layer against interruptions, but Apple does not publish a scam-blocking rate or guarantee that the feature will stop fraudulent calls. It asks for context; it does not verify that a caller is trustworthy.
How does iOS 26 Call Screening work?
When a call comes from an unknown number, Call Screening answers automatically and asks the caller to state their name and reason for calling. Once the caller responds, your iPhone rings and displays that information so you can decide whether to pick up. Apple says the feature builds on Live Voicemail and is intended to help you decide whether to answer or ignore a call.

This creates a pause between an unfamiliar number and your attention, but it is not proof of identity: a caller can provide misleading information. Treat the response as context, not a security check. Apple’s product description explains the workflow but gives no measured figure for scams prevented or guarantee of protection. How do I screen unknown calls on iPhone?
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone.
- Choose Ask Reason for Calling under the unknown-caller controls to have callers provide information before the phone rings.
If the option is missing, check that the phone is running iOS 26 and that Call Screening is available for your region and language. Apple notes that availability can vary by region, language, and local law.

How is screening different from silencing, filtering, or blocking?
These controls solve different problems: screening gathers information before ringing; silencing avoids the interruption; filters sort certain calls; blocking stops calls from a number you specify.

The Unknown Callers and Spam filters are distinct from asking callers to identify themselves. Apple says caller information may also come from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported call-identification apps; those identification sources are separate from the screening prompt.

How do I turn off screening or let unknown callers through?
Return to Settings > Apps > Phone and select Never under the unknown-caller controls. Apple says this turns off Call Screening so calls from unsaved numbers ring normally. Choose Silence instead if you want those calls sent to voicemail rather than ringing. These choices are not the same: Never allows normal ringing, while Silence suppresses the interruption.
Does Call Screening work on every iPhone and in every language?
Apple’s June 2025 iOS 26 announcement lists iPhone 11 and later as compatible with the new software features. If your iPhone is supported, the feature does not by itself require a new device; an older phone outside that compatibility range cannot use it through an iOS 26 upgrade. Availability can vary by locale and local law.

Apple lists Call Screening for supported locales in Cantonese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish. These are not blanket guarantees for every region using those languages: Apple’s iOS and iPadOS feature availability page gives the region-specific list. Apple’s iPhone guide also says Siri speaks in the iPhone’s default language when answering screened calls.
