IonQ completed its acquisition of SkyWater Technology on July 31, 2026. SkyWater shareholders received $15 in cash and 0.4883 IonQ common shares for each SkyWater share. SkyWater continues as a subsidiary under its own name and is expected to keep serving semiconductor foundry customers. Separately, IonQ is building a European presence through quantum-computing access, university research, quantum-secure communications and public-private partnerships.
Did IonQ complete its SkyWater acquisition?
Yes. IonQ announced the transaction’s completion on July 31, 2026, after the required regulatory approvals. The January 26, 2026 announcement described a proposed transaction worth approximately $1.8 billion in equity value and referred to $35 per SkyWater share in cash and stock, subject to a collar. That announcement described the agreement, not the final closing payment.
At closing, the consideration was $15 in cash plus 0.4883 IonQ shares for every SkyWater share. SkyWater CEO Thomas Sonderman continued to lead the business. IonQ said SkyWater would operate under the SkyWater name and continue providing advanced technology, wafer and advanced-packaging services, as well as atomic clocks and quantum interconnects.

IonQ describes the acquisition as vertical integration: bringing semiconductor design, fabrication, prototyping and advanced packaging closer to its quantum-computing operation. The stated benefits are strategic rather than proven post-close results.
#1 Best Overall
U.S.-based manufacturing access
IonQ says SkyWater’s domestic foundry can provide a more secure supply chain for quantum hardware and make it possible to run more wafer iterations and prototype programs in parallel. This could give IonQ tighter control over specialized manufacturing dependencies than relying entirely on outside suppliers.
Packaging and quantum hardware development
The acquisition also covers advanced packaging and related capabilities that affect how quantum chips connect to control electronics and other system components. IonQ’s completion announcement characterized these capabilities as part of the manufacturing and commercialization infrastructure it believes the quantum ecosystem will need.
Roadmap targets remain forward-looking
In January 2026, IonQ said functional testing of a 200,000-qubit quantum processing unit, targeting more than 8,000 logical qubits, was expected to begin in 2028. It also said SkyWater access could accelerate a planned two-million-qubit chip by up to one year. These are company targets and expectations; the announcements do not establish that either system has been delivered or tested.
Rank #2
SkyWater has also said it remains committed to its existing merchant-foundry customers. The acquisition therefore does not mean that SkyWater’s customer-facing foundry business has been discontinued or converted solely to IonQ work.
How is IonQ’s European strategy different?
SkyWater gives IonQ a U.S. manufacturing and packaging platform. IonQ’s European activities are primarily regional partnerships: local access to quantum computers, academic research, quantum-communications infrastructure and ecosystem development. The available announcements do not show that the SkyWater transaction directly caused these European initiatives.

What is IonQ doing in Europe?
Switzerland: QuantumBasel access and research
On December 17, 2025, IonQ announced an extension of its QuantumBasel partnership. IonQ said QuantumBasel would own its existing Forte Enterprise system and secure a next-generation Tempo system. IonQ reported total partnership value above $60 million and an on-site Swiss presence through 2029.
IonQ calls QuantumBasel its official European innovation center and describes joint work involving industry, universities and research institutions. The announced research areas include large-language-model optimization and hybrid quantum-classical computing. The value and timetable are IonQ’s reported terms.

United Kingdom: Cambridge research centre
On March 11, 2026, IonQ and the University of Cambridge announced the IonQ Quantum Innovation Centre. The parties said they intended to deploy a sixth-generation, chip-based 256-qubit system on campus and provide quantum-cloud access for research and workforce development.
The announcement establishes the intended centre and activities, not a confirmed installation date or evidence that the 256-qubit system was already operating.
Rank #4
Switzerland: Geneva Quantum Network
IonQ reported deployment of the Geneva Quantum Network with the University of Geneva, CERN, Rolex SA, HEPIA and Geneva’s OCSIN. According to IonQ, the project uses existing fiber, ID Quantique quantum-key-distribution and quantum-detection systems, with planned experiments to distribute entangled photons between participating institutions.
Slovakia: national quantum communications
Through ID Quantique, IonQ announced Slovakia’s first national quantum communication network in December 2025. The described architecture uses quantum key distribution for multiple sites and combines it with post-quantum cryptography for connections across the country. IonQ links the project to Slovakia’s contribution to the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI).
Romania: reported 36-link network
In February 2026, IonQ reported that Romania’s network contained 36 quantum-secured links covering more than 1,500 kilometers and connecting six metropolitan areas. IonQ also said this represented more than 20 percent of Europe’s terrestrial quantum-communications infrastructure at that time. That percentage is a company-published comparison, not an independently verified sector-wide statistic.

Italy: Q-Alliance in Lombardy
IonQ announced Q-Alliance in October 2025 as a founding-member initiative for a quantum hub in Lombardy aligned with Italy’s national quantum-technology strategy. Its announced remit covers research, entrepreneurship, applications and skills development. The announcement does not establish realized economic results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the strategic comparison?
- Supply chain: SkyWater is a U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and packaging asset; the European programs are distributed partnerships and infrastructure projects.
- Users: SkyWater serves foundry customers and supports IonQ’s hardware roadmap. European initiatives serve researchers, universities, governments, network operators and enterprise collaborators.
- Maturity: The acquisition is completed. Some European networks are reported as deployed, while Cambridge hardware, roadmap milestones and several partnership outcomes remain planned or expected.
- Technology: SkyWater is tied to quantum-chip production and packaging; Europe combines quantum-computing access with quantum-key distribution, post-quantum cryptography and ecosystem development.
What does IonQ’s 2026 outlook include?
On September 8, 2026, IonQ raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to $450 million–$460 million. The company said this guidance includes SkyWater’s contribution only from the July 31 acquisition date through December 31 and removes estimated intercompany revenue from the pre-existing IonQ–SkyWater commercial agreement. It is company guidance published on that date, not reported final revenue.
What is known—and not yet proven?
The completed transaction, closing consideration and SkyWater’s subsidiary status are established by IonQ’s completion announcement. IonQ’s manufacturing rationale, European deployment figures and roadmap benefits are statements from the companies involved. No independent quantitative assessment of acquisition synergies or sector-wide verification of the European infrastructure comparisons is established here.

What did SkyWater shareholders receive in the IonQ deal?
At the July 31, 2026 closing, each SkyWater share was exchanged for $15 in cash and 0.4883 IonQ common shares.
Is SkyWater still operating as a foundry?
Yes. IonQ said SkyWater would continue under its own name, led by Thomas Sonderman, and remain committed to semiconductor foundry customers.
