Blue Duck Capital Partners reportedly wants Snap to sell about 20% of its Specs business to outside investors at a proposed $5 billion valuation, raising $1 billion. The terms, including the fund’s estimate that the money could cover roughly two years of spending, are Blue Duck’s proposal—not a Snap decision, completed deal, or independently verified valuation.
What Blue Duck is asking Snap to do
According to The Next Web’s October 6, 2026 report, Blue Duck Capital Partners urged Snap’s board to sell roughly one-fifth of Specs to an outside investor. The fund proposed valuing Specs at $5 billion, which would put a 20% stake at $1 billion in gross proceeds. It reportedly suggested venture investors or a strategic partner such as SpaceX; SpaceX is an example in the proposal, not a confirmed bidder or partner.
Blue Duck reportedly argued that the proceeds could fund about two years of Specs spending. The reporting does not disclose Specs’ standalone budget or the assumptions behind that runway estimate, so it cannot establish how long $1 billion would actually last.

The fund also reserved the right to sell immediately after publication. That is relevant context about the source’s financial interest; it does not by itself show that the proposal is wrong or insincere.
Is Snap raising money for Specs?
The reported proposal is not evidence that Snap needs outside capital, is considering a sale, or has agreed to a transaction. The original Blue Duck letter and a direct Snap response are not included in the reporting reviewed here. It also does not establish how the proposed valuation was calculated or whether investors would accept it.
A minority stake sale could bring money into the business, but the report does not specify governance rights, operating control, or other deal terms. Nor is a 20% stake sale automatically equivalent to direct dilution for Snap shareholders: the effect would depend on the transaction’s structure and which entity issued or sold the stake.

Snap’s stated strategy and financial priority
Snap’s public comments point to a long-term commitment to the product, alongside an explicit focus on financial discipline. In its Q2 2026 prepared remarks filed with the SEC, CEO Evan Spiegel called SPECS “our largest long-term opportunity” and described it as “a new kind of computer built into see-through glasses.” He also said, “That is why Free Cash Flow per share will be our primary financial objective going forward.” These are Snap’s statements of strategy, not quantified forecasts of Specs’ returns.

Snap announced SPECS on June 16, 2026 as a wearable computer built into see-through augmented-reality glasses. At launch, the company set a $2,195 preorder price through SPECS.com and said it expected shipments in fall 2026 in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. Those were announced plans; they do not establish that shipments or sales have since occurred. Spiegel described the glasses as “the beginning of a new era in computing,” a company positioning statement rather than an independent assessment of the product.

On September 16, 2026, Snap announced SPECS Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service designed to work across iPhone, Mac, and SPECS glasses, along with additional experiences and partnerships. These announcements show ongoing platform development, but do not establish adoption, revenue, or a return on investment.
Why investors disagree about Specs
The disagreement is about both how Specs should be funded and whether it belongs inside Snap—not simply whether augmented reality might have potential. TNW reports that Irenic Capital Management, another investor, argued that Specs should be spun off or shut down. Irenic reportedly cited more than $3.5 billion invested and the view that the unit should be self-funding by now. The spending figure and judgment are Irenic’s claims as reported by TNW, not an audited Specs cost total.
