Inversion Space is developing Arc, an orbital reentry vehicle intended to bring cargo from low Earth orbit to destinations on Earth in under an hour. That is a goal—not a proven, on-demand delivery service. The company’s government project descriptions and published reporting do not establish that Arc has delivered cargo operationally or demonstrated a global delivery time.

How Inversion Space’s cargo-delivery idea works

The concept is to place a vehicle carrying cargo in low Earth orbit before the delivery is needed. When called upon, the vehicle would leave orbit, reenter the atmosphere, and bring its payload to Earth. Inversion calls its vehicle Arc; a separate standardized container is intended to hold cargo such as supplies, sensors, or drones, according to the U.S. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) portfolio.

That orbital staging is central to the proposed speed: the cargo would already be in space rather than waiting for a rocket to launch from Earth after a request arrives. The under-55-minute objective appears in the U.S. SBIR project record. It is a program goal, not a verified delivery-time record.

Orbital cargo drop is not point-to-point rocket transport

These terms describe different logistics approaches. In an orbital cargo drop, cargo and its return vehicle are staged in orbit, then called down. In point-to-point transport, a rocket launches from one terrestrial location and follows a suborbital trajectory toward another. Payload’s November 2024 coverage discusses both approaches; it does not provide a common, independently verified cost or performance comparison.

Question Orbital cargo drop Point-to-point rocket transport
Where is cargo staged? In orbit, aboard a vehicle awaiting a return mission, as proposed for Arc. At a terrestrial launch site before the rocket departs.
What begins the delivery? A call to deorbit and return the staged vehicle. A rocket launch from one location toward another.
Is this Inversion’s Arc concept? Yes. Arc is described as an orbital reentry vehicle under development. No. This is a distinct transport concept.
Verified comparative cost or performance? Not stated in the reviewed reporting (Payload, November 2024). Not stated in the reviewed reporting (Payload, November 2024).

What Inversion’s government project record describes

The SBA-hosted SBIR portfolio lists Inversion Space Company in Los Angeles and includes 2025 projects for Tactical Global Delivery and a Modular Payload Container for Earth Re-Entry. The portfolio describes tactical cargo studies across 0.5-, 2-, and 5-ton classes, with a proposed range of 0.5 to 5 tons. Those are project parameters, not evidence that Arc has carried or delivered those payloads.

The government project description names potential military uses including surveillance equipment, munitions, electronic-warfare systems, troop support, medical kits, and materials for emergency infrastructure repair. The examples describe contemplated applications; they do not establish deployment or delivery capability.

Reported awards are separate figures

The SBA SBIR/STTR portfolio lists a 2025 award of $1,799,887 for Tactical Global Delivery and a separate 2025 award of $1,799,063 for the Modular Payload Container project. Payload reported a $71 million STRATFI contract for Arc development in 2024. These are amounts for different awards and reporting contexts, not a verified combined funding total.

Possible uses—and the security questions

The government project record frames rapid delivery primarily as military logistics, including reconnaissance, electronic warfare, resupply, and infrastructure support. Payload also discusses possible uses of space-cargo systems in reaching difficult or contested locations, search and rescue, and humanitarian relief. These are potential applications, not evidence of routine humanitarian service or commercial availability.

Reentry and rocket-transport capabilities can also raise dual-use concerns, including potential weapon-delivery applications, as Payload notes. The cited government program is framed around cargo logistics, but the broader security implications are relevant to how such technology is assessed.

What has—and has not—been demonstrated

Payload’s November 2024 article reported a planned Arc maiden flight in 2026. That was a forecast published at the time, not confirmation of a completed flight. The reviewed sources do not establish that Arc has since flown or that Inversion offers operational deliveries.

In a statement published by Payload, Inversion CEO Justin Fiaschetti said the contract would allow the company “to develop and demonstrate the technologies that make it possible to deliver cargo anywhere on Earth in minutes, from remote islands to uninhabitable mountains to the middle of the ocean.” This describes what the contract was intended to support, not a demonstrated service.

The available material also does not establish an independently measured success rate, a price per delivery, a commercial customer count, or a proven global delivery time. A company record in the SBIR portfolio lists 61 employees, but that is a database figure and should not be treated as current headcount.
