The Floppotron 2.0 is Polish engineer Paweł Zadrożniak’s electromechanical computer orchestra: 64 floppy drives, eight hard disks and two scanners coordinated to play music. Instead of producing sound through speakers, it turns the motors and moving parts inside surplus computer hardware into pitched notes and percussion.
What is the Floppotron 2.0?
Zadrożniak began the project in 2011 with two floppy drives playing the “Imperial March.” The video drew more than five million views, according to his current Patreon profile, and inspired a much larger version. He documented the Floppotron 2.0 on July 6, 2016; its inventory is 64 floppy drives, eight hard disks and two scanners. Zadrożniak’s profile and the EE Times account describe the project and its scale.
The 2.0 is a documented historical build, not a retail kit. Zadrożniak’s profile says he later moved on to a larger Floppotron 3.0, so the 2.0’s specifications should not be mistaken for the current machine. The project site provides his build documentation.
How do floppy drives make music?
Floppy drives use stepper motors to move their read/write heads. The drive’s head motion makes an audible sound; changing how quickly the motor steps changes the sound’s pitch. Zadrożniak summarizes the principle in his project documentation: “Every device with an electric motor is able to generate a sound.” He adds, “The sound generated by a motor depends on driving speed. The higher the frequency, the greater the pitch.”

- Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
The drive responds to enable, direction and step signals. When the drive is enabled, a falling edge on STEP moves the head in the direction set by DIR. By timing those step pulses, the controller can make a drive produce a sequence of pitches. The sound is the physical motor and mechanism at work—not a recording played through a speaker.
What the other devices contribute
- Floppy drives: Their stacks are used for lower notes and parts such as bass, guitar, piano and some drum tracks.
- Hard disks: Controlled impacts from the drive heads create drum-like percussive sounds.
- Scanners: Their motors offer a larger useful pitch range, making them suitable for lead and higher-pitched parts.

How is the hardware coordinated?
The 64 floppy drives are organized in columns of eight, with each column connected to an eight-channel controller based on an ATMega16 microcontroller. The controllers are linked in an SPI chain, allowing commands to be distributed across the array. The project’s technical documentation describes the controller network and drive signals.

How does the music software work?
The documented host application was written in Python 2.7. It reads a simple language of note sequences organized into tracks associated with particular controllers or channels, merges parallel tracks into a command list, and sends the commands over a COM port. It can also partially generate a song script from a MIDI file. Zadrożniak’s project documentation describes the software workflow.
MIDI is a starting point, not an automatic finished arrangement. Notes must be redistributed to fit the range of each hardware group. Zadrożniak also notes that details such as slides and vibrato have to be recreated by ear. In practice, arranging is a combination of composition and scheduling commands for the available devices. His arrangement notes explain these limits.

Floppy disks are products of the 80s and 90s of the last century, and has a history of 30 to 40 years, due to the retention of time is too long, some floppy disks may have been corrupted, got mold or dust, so some of your floppy disks may not be opened by our floppy disk drive successfully or the drive may can open some floppy disks fristly but stop working because of the dust on the disk. Note: Please check the status of the floppy disk carefully before reading it in case the drive stops working due to floppy disk issues.
What would it take to build a similar orchestra?
A Floppotron-style build involves much more than collecting drives. The documented 2.0 depends on a large array of compatible hardware, custom microcontroller-based control, wiring, cabling and power distribution, plus software that schedules notes for individual channels. The project’s notes mention ATMega-class controllers, SPI-linked adapter boards and motor-control circuitry; they do not establish a ready-made kit or that any particular surplus drive will work with the original electronics.

- Control: Build or adapt electronics to provide the required drive signals and coordinate multiple channels.
- Arrangement: Map parts to the devices’ pitch ranges and distinctive sounds; MIDI conversion alone will not do this completely.
- Integration: Plan connectors, wiring, power distribution and maintenance for a multi-device installation.
These are practical implications of the documented architecture, not a tested parts list or a claim that every drive is electrically interchangeable. The documentation does not provide verified safety-testing results, so builders should not treat the project notes as a substitute for appropriate electrical and mechanical precautions.
How is it different from speaker-based computer music?
A software synthesizer or ordinary audio setup generates sound through speakers. The Floppotron makes sound mechanically: motors, heads and drive mechanisms are the sound sources. That produces a distinctive, constrained range of pitches and timbres, while also requiring custom hardware and hands-on arrangement. Its appeal is precisely that the computer components are performing the music rather than merely playing an audio file.
