NestJS is a framework for building server-side applications on Node.js. It gives an application structure—modules, controllers and injectable providers—while relying on an HTTP platform such as Express or Fastify to handle web traffic. NestJS is not Node.js itself, a standalone HTTP server, or a programming language.
That distinction matters when you start: choose a supported Node.js version, decide whether to use TypeScript or JavaScript, then scaffold a Nest project and select its HTTP platform based on your project’s needs.
What is NestJS used for?
NestJS is used to build server-side applications on Node.js, including applications that expose HTTP endpoints. It is written in TypeScript, supports TypeScript directly, and can also be used with JavaScript. Nest combines ideas from object-oriented, functional and functional-reactive programming to provide conventions for organizing an application.
The framework’s stated design goals include testability, scalability, loose coupling and maintainability. These are goals supported by its architecture, not guaranteed results: the quality of an application still depends on how it is designed, implemented and operated. Nest’s architecture is heavily inspired by Angular.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Nest sits above an HTTP platform such as Express or Fastify. As the NestJS documentation puts it, “Nest provides a level of abstraction above these common Node.js frameworks (Express/Fastify), but also exposes their APIs directly to the developer.” Nest adds application conventions without hiding the underlying platform completely.
Is NestJS a framework or a server?
NestJS is an application framework, not a server or runtime. Node.js runs the JavaScript application; an HTTP platform handles HTTP-specific work; Nest supplies the architecture and application code that connects routes, dependencies and features.
- Node.js: the JavaScript runtime on which the application runs.
- NestJS: the framework used to organize the application and its behavior.
- Express or Fastify: the HTTP platform Nest uses to process web requests.
This layered design lets a Nest application use platform capabilities and ecosystem tools while keeping its own feature structure in Nest modules, controllers and providers.
What’s the difference between a Nest module, controller, and service?
A typical feature groups related HTTP routes and application logic together. For example, a products feature might define a module, a controller for product-related requests and a service that carries out the work. The core architecture does not require a particular database or ORM.

Modules organize capabilities
A module is a class marked with @Module(). Its metadata declares the controllers and providers it owns, the modules it imports, and providers it exports for use elsewhere. Every Nest application has a root module; larger applications commonly divide features into additional modules. Providers are normally scoped to their module unless exported and made available through imports, or explicitly configured as global.

Controllers handle requests
A controller defines routes and handles incoming requests. It is the HTTP-facing part of a feature and can pass more involved work to a provider rather than embedding all application logic in route handlers.
Providers supply injectable dependencies
A provider is a dependency Nest can create and inject where it is needed. Services are common providers, but repositories, factories and helper classes can also be providers. After providers are registered in module metadata, Nest resolves their relationships through its dependency-injection system.
Can I use NestJS with JavaScript?
Yes. Nest supports JavaScript as well as TypeScript, but the current first-steps documentation says JavaScript use requires Babel because Nest relies on newer language features. Most documentation examples use TypeScript, and the official examples can be switched to JavaScript.
Choose TypeScript if you want its type system and associated tooling in your project. JavaScript may suit your preferences or existing codebase, but account for the extra Babel compilation setup described in the Nest guide. Neither language is universally right for every team.
Which Node.js version does NestJS need?
The current Nest documentation lists separate minimums for running an application and for using CLI generators. The distinction matters: a Node.js release that can run an app may not meet the CLI generator requirement. These version requirements were checked against the official documentation on October 4, 2026; consult the linked pages again when starting a project because requirements can change.

| Task | Documented Node.js requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Run a Nest application | Node.js 20.19 or later, or Node.js 22.12 or later on the 22.x line | NestJS first steps |
Use CLI generators such as nest new or nest generate |
Node.js 22.22.3 or later, 24.15 or later, or 26 or later | NestJS CLI overview |
Nest recommends using the latest active LTS release that satisfies the relevant requirements. The CLI documentation also requires a Node.js binary with ICU/internationalization support. Check both the runtime and generator conditions before installing the CLI or creating a project.
How do I create my first NestJS app?
The official quick start uses the Nest CLI. Install Node.js at a version compatible with the generator requirements above, then run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Install the CLI globally:
npm i -g @nestjs/cli. -
Create a project:
nest new project-name. -
When prompted, choose ESM or CommonJS. The current prompt defaults to ESM, paired with Vitest; CommonJS is paired with Jest.
-
From the generated project directory, start the app with
npm run start.
A newly generated app listens on port 3000 unless the PORT environment variable sets a different port. The generated project gives you a starting structure to adapt; add feature modules, controllers and providers as the application grows.

Should I use Express or Fastify with NestJS?
Express is Nest’s default supported HTTP platform, available through @nestjs/platform-express. Fastify is an out-of-the-box alternative through @nestjs/platform-fastify. The Nest documentation describes Express as a well-known minimalist framework with broad community resources and Fastify as focused on high performance and low overhead. Those descriptions are not a controlled comparison, so they do not establish that Fastify makes every Nest application faster.

| Team familiarity | Prefer a platform your developers already know if that reduces friction for your project. |
| Plugins and ecosystem | Check whether the libraries or integrations you need support your intended platform. |
| Platform-specific APIs | Review whether your code or dependencies rely on Express- or Fastify-specific APIs; Nest exposes platform APIs, but those APIs are not interchangeable by default. |
| Operational and performance needs | Evaluate the actual application and its requirements rather than assuming a platform label predicts its performance. |
You do not need to learn Express first to learn NestJS: Nest provides its own application structure and supports Fastify as well. However, familiarity with the chosen platform can help when you need to work with its APIs or ecosystem.
What does deploying a NestJS application involve?
A production deployment is more than starting the development server. The Nest deployment guide describes building the application, configuring its environment and dependent services, then running the compiled entry point on a suitable hosting platform.
-
Build the project. In a typical generated project,
npm run buildinvokesnest buildand writes compiled JavaScript todist. -
Check the project configuration to confirm the actual output path and entry-point filename.

Set production environment variables, including
NODE_ENV=production. The Nest guide recommends this because ecosystem libraries may change behavior based on the environment. -
Provide any required database or other dependent services, then run the compiled entry point—commonly
node dist/main.jsfor the documented typical layout. -
Choose a hosting approach. Nest documents Docker and cloud hosting; Mau is its official platform for deploying to AWS.
Cloud hosting and self-hosting involve different trade-offs. A cloud service may cost more or provide less infrastructure control; self-hosting means the operator is responsible for maintenance, security and backups. Which approach fits depends on the application and the team operating it.
