Intel has patented a way to integrate microLEDs into an IC package, potentially including a CPU package. The disclosure describes decorative lighting, illuminated wording, and visual indicators for device operations—but it is a patent, not an announced or confirmed retail CPU. In a typical desktop PC, a cooler could also hide the lights from view.

What Intel’s patent describes

The reported patent, US 12,733,303, is titled “IC Package with Micro LEDs.” Tom’s Hardware describes a design in which a semiconductor die sits partly or fully within a glass substrate. MicroLEDs may connect directly to the die or through nanowires, while through-glass vias (TGVs) carry electrical power and signals. The patent’s examples include using the LEDs as aesthetic components, to indicate device operations, and to illuminate wording across a CPU. Tom’s Hardware’s coverage reproduces the patent’s description of LEDs used as “either aesthetic components of the electronic device or to indicate certain operations being performed by the electronic device.”

Those are possibilities set out in a patent disclosure, not demonstrated product features. Fudzilla reports a filing date of 6 September 2022 and a grant date of 8 September 2026; those dates are reported by the outlet rather than verified here against the underlying patent record. Fudzilla’s report gives the patent number and dates. The USPTO Patent Public Search is the official lookup portal.

Would the lights be visible in a desktop PC?

That depends on the package design and the cooling setup. A conventional CPU cooler sits over the processor package, so it may cover or obscure any light-emitting area. Tom’s Hardware raises the same practical question about seeing the feature beneath a heatsink. That is a visibility challenge for some desktop configurations, not proof that the concept could not be used in other package or device designs.

What could the lights be used for?

Decoration and illuminated text

The patent describes microLEDs as aesthetic elements and proposes lighting wording across a CPU. That could make the package itself a visual feature where it remains exposed, but the patent does not establish how bright, configurable, or visible a finished product would be.

Visual indications of operations

The disclosure also proposes using LEDs to indicate operations. GamesRadar+ reproduces patent language describing possible use “as an extra aesthetic component” and “as in situ electrical test indicators,” as well as lighting wording across a CPU. GamesRadar+’s coverage presents these as patent possibilities, not established diagnostic features in a product.

Is Intel selling a CPU with these lights?

The available reporting does not identify a retail CPU announcement or launch date for this feature. A patent grant protects a disclosed invention; by itself, it does not mean the patent holder will manufacture or sell a product that uses it. Treat the “disco lights” description as shorthand for a patented package concept, not a product you can buy.

What can you use for visible PC graphics now?

A separate option is a CPU cooler with an LCD display. Such coolers can show imagery or system information, according to GamesRadar+. The screen is part of the cooler, not microLEDs integrated into a CPU package under Intel’s patent. Before choosing one, check compatibility with your processor socket, PC case, and radiator mounting options.
