Yes—but the evidence is narrower than the headline may suggest. In late 2021, Intel’s Alder Lake launch coincided with a decline in AMD’s share of desktop CPU shipments, while other measures—including AMD’s share of the broader x86 market and its presence among surveyed Steam users—moved upward. Those figures describe different markets and populations, not a single worldwide score.
What the market-share figures show
The clearest evidence of an early Alder Lake impact is in desktop shipments. Mercury Research estimates, as reported in 2022 by Tom’s Hardware, put AMD at 16.2% of desktop CPU units in Q4 2021. That was a drop of 0.8 percentage points from the previous quarter and 3.1 points from a year earlier. The same report said Alder Lake had begun to have a material effect in consumer desktop PCs.
That desktop result did not mean AMD was losing every part of the x86 market. Mercury Research put AMD’s overall x86 unit share at 25.6% in Q4 2021, up 1.0 percentage point quarter over quarter and 3.9 points year over year. Overall x86 includes segments beyond consumer desktops, so it can rise even as desktop share falls.
These are unit-share estimates, not revenue-share figures. PCWorld’s coverage discusses the distinction: the share of processors counted is not the same measure as the share of processor revenue.

Why the early indicators appeared to conflict
Mindfactory: one German retailer’s sales
A November 2021 snapshot from German retailer Mindfactory showed AMD with about 70% of that retailer’s CPU sales and Intel with 30%; Alder Lake accounted for 37% of Intel’s sales. TechSpot reported the figures and identified the Core i7-12700K among the Intel models selling in the snapshot. This is a useful early signal that the new CPUs found buyers within Intel’s lineup, but it covers one retailer in one month—not worldwide shipments or all PC purchases. See TechSpot’s report.
Steam: processors in surveyed gaming PCs
The November 2021 Steam Hardware Survey put AMD at 31.53% and Intel at 68.45% of surveyed users, with AMD’s figure rising month over month. TechRadar’s coverage describes the result. A survey of processors already in use by Steam participants measures installed gaming-PC participation; it is not a count of new CPU shipments or all computers sold. An existing PC base also changes on a different timetable from a monthly retail snapshot.

Mindfactory, Steam, and Mercury Research therefore need not tell the same short-term story. They differ in geography and population, in whether they count retail sales, installed systems, or shipments, and in the CPU segments they cover. Treating their percentages as interchangeable would turn several partial views into a misleading single verdict.

What changed in Q1 2022
In Q1 2022, AMD’s overall x86 unit share reached 27.7%, according to Mercury Research estimates reported by Tom’s Hardware. AMD gained share in a sharply contracting desktop market because its shipments declined less quickly than Intel’s; reporting also cited excess inventory as a factor. At the same time, Intel recorded a year-over-year gain in desktop share in Alder Lake’s first full quarter. A gain in desktop share for Intel can coexist with a rise in AMD’s overall x86 share because the measures cover different scopes and comparisons.

The quarter also involved changes in the products being sold, not just the number of processors. Mercury Research analyst Dean McCarron said, as quoted in Tom’s Hardware’s Q1 report, that “Lower shipments of low-priced entry-level CPUs and strong ramps of new mobile processors (Alder Lake CPUs for Intel and Barcelo and Rembrandt CPUs cores for AMD) resulted in much higher mobile CPU prices, which helped set the record client (combined desktop and notebook) average selling prices of $138, which were up more than 10 percent on quarter and more than 30 percent on year.” The $138 figure refers to the combined desktop-and-notebook client CPU average selling price described in that report, not a desktop-only price or a market-share measure.
How much Alder Lake had shipped
By its Q2 2022 earnings report, Intel said Alder Lake had shipped “well in excess of 35 million units” and powered more than 525 designs. Those are Intel’s own product-family shipment and design claims, not independent estimates of Intel’s share relative to AMD. They show the scale Intel said the platform had reached, but do not by themselves establish how much share Alder Lake took from a competitor. See Intel’s Q2 2022 results.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- Supported: AMD’s share of desktop CPU units fell in Q4 2021, and contemporaneous reporting connected Alder Lake’s arrival with a material effect in consumer desktops.
- Also supported: AMD’s overall x86 unit share rose in Q4 2021 and reached 27.7% in Q1 2022; those broader results do not negate the narrower desktop movement.
- Not established by these figures: a uniform AMD decline across all CPU markets, a worldwide retail-sales result inferred from one German store, or a precise causal share transfer attributable solely to Alder Lake.
- Keep the date in view: these are historical indicators from late 2021 and early 2022, not current market-share estimates.
Where the Core i7-12700K fits
The Core i7-12700K is a concrete Alder Lake example named in the Mindfactory sales reporting, rather than evidence that the processor is the best choice today. Alder Lake desktop systems use Intel’s LGA1700 platform; a build or upgrade also requires checking that the specific motherboard supports the CPU and the intended DDR4 or DDR5 memory. Compatibility varies by board, so verify the exact motherboard and processor specifications before buying parts.
