Intel Z690 is an Alder Lake-era desktop chipset, but some often-cited Z690 features belong to the processor rather than the chipset. Intel lists PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 for the chipset itself; PCIe 5.0 comes from supported processor lanes. The platform can use either DDR4 or DDR5, depending on the motherboard, while Gear 4 is a memory-controller mode in the processor—not a Z690 chipset feature.
What are the Intel Z690 chipset specifications?
Intel identifies Z690 as a desktop chipset in its 600 Series, launched in Q4 2021 and formerly code-named Alder Lake. Its listed chipset base power is 6 W. The figures below describe chipset capabilities, not a promise that every Z690 motherboard exposes every port or configuration. Intel Z690 Chipset Specifications
| Specification | Intel-listed capability |
|---|---|
| Chipset PCI Express | Up to 28 lanes; PCIe 3.0 and 4.0; x1, x2 and x4 lane configurations |
| Processor-connected PCIe ports | PCIe 5.0 x16 or 2×8, plus PCIe 4.0 x4 |
| DMI | DMI 4.0, up to eight DMI lanes |
| USB | Up to 14 USB 2.0 ports; USB 3.2 configurations are listed on Intel’s specification page |
| SATA | Up to eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports |
| Memory overclocking | Supported |
| Chipset base power | 6 W |
| Launch | Q4 2021 |
“Up to” figures are ceilings for the chipset, not counts guaranteed on a specific board. Motherboard makers decide which connections to implement and how they are routed.
Does Z690 support PCIe 5.0?
Yes, a Z690 platform can support PCIe 5.0 through processor-connected lanes. Intel describes a processor port configuration of one PCIe 5.0 x16 link or two x8 links, alongside a processor-connected PCIe 4.0 x4 link. The chipset’s own documented PCIe revisions are 3.0 and 4.0, so it is important not to count CPU lanes as chipset lanes. Intel Z690 chipset specifications and the Intel Z690 product brief

The motherboard determines which physical slots use processor lanes, whether the main x16 connection can be split into two x8 connections, and whether installing other devices changes available bandwidth or lane allocation. Check the exact board manual and specifications rather than inferring slot wiring from the Z690 chipset name.
Can a Z690 motherboard use DDR4 and DDR5?
The Z690 platform supports either DDR5 or DDR4, but the motherboard determines which generation it accepts. Intel’s 2021 product brief lists DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s or DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s for the described 12th Gen Core desktop configuration. These are platform support figures, not a guarantee that every processor-and-board combination will run at those speeds in every memory population or tuning configuration. Intel Z690 product brief

For a build, check the motherboard’s exact model and memory specifications before buying RAM. A DDR4 board needs DDR4; a DDR5 board needs DDR5. Do not assume that one board accepts both types unless its manufacturer explicitly documents a special design. For kit compatibility, also consult the board maker’s qualified-vendor list (QVL), including its supported memory population and BIOS notes. Intel describes DDR4 and DDR5 as alternative memory technologies for the processor platform. Intel 12th Gen Core processor memory-controller documentation

Gear 4 describes the ratio between the processor’s memory controller and DRAM speed. Intel documents three dynamic gearing modes for 12th Generation Core processors: Gear 1 at 1:1, Gear 2 at 1:2, and Gear 4 at 1:4. In Gear 4, the memory controller runs at one quarter of the DRAM speed represented by that ratio. It is a processor memory-controller operating mode, not a chipset data rate or a guarantee of better application performance. Intel 12th Gen Core processor documentation: SAGV points

Whether a particular Gear option is available or appropriate in a build depends on the processor, motherboard, BIOS and memory configuration. Intel’s ratio definition alone does not establish stable settings or performance for an individual system.
