The Xeon w9-3495X is the clearer choice for a single-socket professional workstation; the Xeon Platinum 8558P is a server-family processor that should be evaluated as part of a validated server design. The w9-3495X has more cores and a higher listed maximum turbo frequency, while the 8558P has substantially more cache. Those specifications alone do not establish which is faster for your applications.
Xeon 8558P vs. w9-3495X: key specifications
Intel lists the 8558P in its Xeon server family and the w9-3495X in Xeon W, its workstation line. The figures below come from Intel’s ARK processor-series listing for the 8558P and its w9-3495X specification page, both consulted in 2026, plus Intel’s February 2023 Xeon W launch announcement.
| Specification | Xeon Platinum 8558P | Xeon w9-3495X |
|---|---|---|
| Product class | Xeon server family | Xeon W workstation |
| Launch listing | Q4 2023 | Q1 2023 |
| Cores and threads | 48 cores; thread count not stated in the cited Intel ARK series listing | 56 cores, 112 threads |
| Base frequency | 2.7 GHz | 1.90 GHz |
| Maximum turbo frequency | Up to 4 GHz | 4.80 GHz |
| Cache | 260 MB | 105 MB Intel Smart Cache |
| Power rating | 350 W listed TDP | 350 W base power; 420 W maximum turbo power |
| Socket and memory | Server platform; confirm socket, memory type, and supported configuration against the specific server’s documentation | FCLGA4677; eight-channel DDR5-4800 ECC RDIMM memory, up to 4 TB |
| PCIe | Not stated in the cited Intel ARK series listing; verify the server implementation | Up to 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes |
| Intel launch recommended customer price | Not stated in the cited Intel material | $5,889 in Intel’s February 2023 launch release; this is a launch reference, not a current street price |
Intel’s current w9-3495X specification page displays a recommended customer price of $6,478 and explains that RCP is guidance, not a guaranteed selling price. It should not be treated as a live retail quote.

There is no single speed winner established by these specifications. The w9-3495X has eight more cores than the 8558P and a higher listed maximum turbo frequency, while the 8558P has 155 MB more cache. These are design specifications, not benchmark results; core count, turbo frequency, and cache size by themselves do not predict performance across different applications.
#1 Best Overall
Intel cautions that processor numbers are not performance measures and that results vary with system configuration. No direct 8558P-versus-w9-3495X benchmark is established in the cited Intel material. For a decision based on speed, compare independent tests of the exact software and task you run, using systems configured comparably to the one you plan to buy.
Workloads that benefit from many cores
For rendering, simulation, compilation, or other heavily parallel work, compare application-specific results rather than assuming the 56-core processor will lead simply because it has more cores. Software scaling, memory behavior, power limits, and the complete system all affect results.

Workloads sensitive to frequency or memory access
The w9-3495X’s listed turbo ceiling is higher, and the 8558P has more cache, but neither figure guarantees a particular application’s performance. Check benchmarks for your application and workload size; do not use cache or peak frequency as a substitute for those results.

Platform compatibility: can an 8558P go in a w9-3495X motherboard?
Do not assume so. Intel documents the w9-3495X for a single-socket FCLGA4677 workstation platform, while it catalogs the 8558P in the Xeon server family. A workstation motherboard listing support for Xeon W-3400 does not establish 8558P compatibility. Confirm the exact CPU support list, firmware, power delivery, and memory requirements for the specific board or server before purchasing.
For the w9-3495X, choose a motherboard that explicitly supports Xeon W-3400 and the processor’s single-socket platform. For the 8558P, start with a server or OEM system whose documentation validates that exact processor. Socket appearance or a shared socket designation, where applicable, is not enough to establish that a system will boot or operate correctly.
Memory, PCIe, power, and cooling requirements
w9-3495X workstation build
Intel specifies eight-channel DDR5-4800 ECC RDIMM memory and support for up to 4 TB with the w9-3495X. Use registered ECC modules supported by the chosen board, and check its qualified vendor list, per-slot capacity rules, and memory population guidance. Filling the eight channels appropriately matters for both capacity and bandwidth; follow the motherboard manual rather than mixing arbitrary modules.

The processor supports up to 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes, useful when a workstation needs multiple high-bandwidth devices. The number of slots and how lanes are routed depends on the motherboard, so check its layout and slot-sharing notes before planning GPUs, storage, or accelerator cards.

8558P server build
The cited Intel ARK series listing establishes the 8558P’s server-family classification and core, frequency, cache, and TDP figures, but it does not establish a universal memory or PCIe configuration for every server implementation. Use the OEM’s specification for the exact server model to confirm supported DIMMs, channel layout, expansion slots, and processor configuration.

Power and thermal planning
Both are high-power processors. Intel lists 350 W TDP for the 8558P; for the w9-3495X, Intel lists 350 W base power and 420 W maximum turbo power. Select a system with power delivery and cooling specified for the chosen processor and its sustained workload. Do not size a cooler or power supply from the 350 W figure alone when the w9-3495X’s maximum turbo power is also relevant.

Choose the w9-3495X for a professional workstation
The w9-3495X is the more direct fit when you need a documented single-socket workstation platform, ECC RDIMM support up to 4 TB, and up to 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Intel positions Xeon W-3400 for professional creators, engineers, designers, data scientists, and power users. That positioning and the platform specifications make it easier to evaluate as a workstation component, but application benchmarks and the exact board remain decisive.
Evaluate the 8558P as a server processor
The 8558P belongs to Intel’s Xeon server family. Consider it in a validated server design that specifies the processor, memory, cooling, and expansion configuration; do not select it as a workstation upgrade based only on its core count or cache. Intel’s cited material does not establish its launch price or a universal supported memory and PCIe configuration.

Budget for the compatible board or validated chassis, ECC memory, power delivery, cooling, and any required expansion hardware. Intel’s w9-3495X pricing figures are recommended customer prices, not confirmed current retail prices, and a comparable 8558P price is not established here. Compare complete, supported system configurations and the benchmarks for your actual workload before deciding whether the w9-3495X is worth its cost.
