Intel will remain involved in Elon Musk’s Terafab project, CEO Lip-Bu Tan told Bloomberg, according to Reuters’ October 7, 2026, report. That confirms continuity for Intel, but it does not establish an exclusive role or a finalized division of work with other potential partners.
What did Intel’s CEO say about Terafab?
Tan said Intel would stay involved in Terafab, Reuters reported, attributing the statement to Bloomberg. Tan spoke ahead of an event in Tokyo marking Intel’s 50th year of operations in Japan. The statement confirms that Intel’s participation is continuing; it does not specify the work Intel will perform or the terms of its involvement. Reuters’ October 7 report
What is Terafab?
Terafab is a proposed chipmaking project associated with Musk’s companies. Bloomberg reported in March that Musk said it would be built in Austin and jointly run by Tesla and SpaceX, with a long-term goal of making chips for robotics, artificial intelligence and space data centers. Bloomberg’s March report
Intel’s April announcement named SpaceX, xAI and Tesla as project partners. It characterized Terafab’s aim as producing one terawatt of compute per year. That figure is a project target—not achieved output or a verified measure of the facility’s manufacturing capacity. Intel’s announcement, as reported by Bloomberg Bloomberg’s April coverage

- Next‑Gen Platform Support: Compatible with Intel 800 Series Chipset‑based motherboards with LGA1851 Socket enabling PCIe 5.0/4.0 and high‑speed DDR5 memory (up to 7200 MT/s).
- High‑Performance Core Configuration: Features up to 24 cores (8 P‑cores + 16 E‑cores) for demanding gaming and creator
- Ultra‑Fast Boost Clocks: Reaches up to 5.5 GHz max turbo frequency for top‑tier responsiveness and performance
- Built for Enthusiasts: Unlocked for performance tuning when paired with Intel Z‑series chipsets, making it ideal for overclockers and power users.
- Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity
What is Intel doing for the project?
Intel said it would help “refactor silicon fab technology” and pointed to its capabilities in designing, fabricating and packaging high-performance chips at scale. Bloomberg explained that refactoring is a development stage that can help make chips more powerful or reliable. The public description is broad: it does not provide a detailed work plan or assign specific responsibilities to Intel. Intel’s prepared remarks for its first-quarter 2026 earnings also referred to the partnership and to external engagement around Intel 18A-P and 14A. Those remarks do not establish that either process has been selected for Terafab. Intel’s Q1 2026 earnings remarks

- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
Is TSMC joining Terafab?
That remains unsettled in the cited reporting. Musk confirmed discussions with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) about possible cooperation, saying: “Just discussions, but something may come of it,” as quoted by Tom’s Hardware. Discussions do not confirm that TSMC has joined the project. Tom’s Hardware’s October report
Tan’s statement that Intel will stay involved does not rule out TSMC participation. The available reports do not establish whether TSMC will take part, whether it would perform work similar to Intel’s, or how responsibilities would be divided. They also do not settle ownership or operating arrangements beyond the earlier public descriptions of the project. Reuters’ October 7 report Tom’s Hardware’s October report
