Intel shares fell about 2% on October 5, 2026, after Elon Musk said TSMC and Terafab were discussing a possible collaboration. That is a reason to watch Intel’s foundry plans, not proof that TSMC has signed a deal, displaced Intel, or changed Intel’s business. The key distinction: talks were reported; their scope and outcome remain unresolved.

Why did Intel stock slide on October 5?

A report published October 5, 2026, said Intel shares fell about 2% after Musk confirmed discussions involving Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Terafab. The move is a dated market reaction, not a current price or a measure of what the stock will do next. Tom’s Hardware reported the decline and the talks.

Musk’s reported response was: “Just discussions, but something may come of it.” Tom’s Hardware attributed that wording to him. It signals that conversations were taking place while leaving their outcome open. It does not confirm an agreement.

What does the TSMC news mean for Intel’s role in Terafab?

SpaceX disclosed in an SEC filing that Intel joined Terafab in April 2026. The filing said Intel was expected to contribute expertise in designing, fabricating, and packaging high-performance chips. It also said that specific projects, timelines, milestones, and capital expenditures were subject to separate negotiations and agreements. SpaceX’s filing therefore describes participation and an expected contribution, not settled project terms or guaranteed Intel revenue.

SEC correspondence from May 2026 also said Tesla and Intel were not obligated to remain in the project, and that specific projects, anticipated schedules, and spending had not yet been determined in the disclosure discussion. The correspondence describes the status of those disclosures at that time; it does not establish whether terms have changed since.

Possible outcome What it could mean for Intel What is established
TSMC discusses a limited collaboration while Intel remains a participant Intel could still contribute to Terafab; the talks alone do not establish that its work or opportunity has changed. Intel’s participation was disclosed, and Musk said discussions were taking place. The scope and terms remain unresolved.
TSMC takes a substantial manufacturing role Intel’s expected role could become less central, reducing the opportunity investors had associated with Terafab. This is a possible scenario, not a confirmed event. The cited reporting and filings do not establish that TSMC will operate the facility or that Intel has lost work.

The concern behind the selloff is understandable: if TSMC becomes an additional or more prominent manufacturing partner, Intel may be less singularly associated with the project than some investors expected. But a change in investor expectations is not the same as a documented change in Intel’s work, revenue, or capital commitments.

How does Terafab fit Intel Foundry’s financial picture?

Intel reported $5.765 billion in Intel Foundry revenue and a $2.089 billion operating loss for the quarter ended June 27, 2026. Both figures are from Intel Corporation’s 2026 reporting. Intel’s Q2 2026 earnings materials show why revenue should not be confused with profitability: the foundry business generated substantial sales but still reported an operating loss.

Intel said it had committed to completing development of Intel 14A, while the scale and pace of manufacturing expansion would depend on committed demand—including Intel’s own product needs and external customer design wins. Intel’s statement makes demand a condition of expansion, not an outcome already secured.

In Q1 2026 earnings materials, Intel forecast that early Intel 14A design commitments would begin in the second half of 2026 and expand into the first half of 2027. That was management’s forecast, not proof that customer commitments have since arrived. A prospective Terafab project could matter to Intel’s foundry ambitions, but the available figures do not show that any one customer or project would make the business profitable.

Why you shouldn’t panic—and what to watch

“Don’t panic” does not mean the risk is trivial or that Intel shares will recover. It means the reported decline and an unfinalized discussion are not enough to conclude that Intel has lost Terafab work or that its foundry strategy has failed. Nor do they show that the stock is safe. The business outcome depends on agreements, customer demand, and execution—not on the market reaction alone.

  • A definitive agreement naming TSMC’s role and specifying whether it includes manufacturing at Terafab.
  • Updated disclosures describing Intel’s projects, schedule, milestones, spending, or continuing participation.
  • Evidence of committed customer demand or design wins relevant to Intel’s planned manufacturing expansion.
  • Intel Foundry results showing how revenue and operating losses change over time.

This is general news context, not personalized investment advice. The October 5 share-price move is evidence of investor sensitivity to Intel’s foundry strategy; it is not, by itself, evidence of a completed business setback.
