Intel says its Core Ultra 9 285 delivers up to 21% higher performance than the Core i9-14900 in a media-and-entertainment benchmark, and up to 2.97 times the graphics performance in a separate 3DMark test. Those are workload-specific Intel results—not a general claim that every Arrow Lake processor is 21% or more than 200% faster.

What Intel’s two headline numbers measure

Claim Processors compared Test and reported result
Up to 21% faster media and entertainment performance Core Ultra 9 285 vs. Core i9-14900 Intel’s estimate based on the SPECworkstation 4.0 Media and Entertainment subscore
Up to 2.97× graphics performance Core Ultra 9 285 vs. Core i9-14900 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited: Intel reports scores of 1,845 vs. 621

The 21% figure appears in Intel’s desktop performance index dated February 26, 2025. Intel’s graphics result is from October 2024. Both are vendor-published comparisons; the figures should be read as “up to” results in their named tests, not as independent testing or a prediction for every application. See Intel’s desktop media and entertainment result and graphics benchmark results.

The 21% result is for the Core Ultra 9 285—not the 285K

Intel’s media comparison names the Core Ultra 9 285 and Core i9-14900. The Core Ultra 9 285K is a different Arrow Lake desktop SKU, and Intel’s cited 21% result does not establish its performance. Intel lists the 285K as a launched Series 2 processor; its specifications include 24 cores, 24 threads, maximum turbo frequency up to 5.7 GHz, 125 W processor base power, and DDR5 support up to 6400 MT/s. Those product specifications are not a substitute for benchmark results for the 285K. See Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K specifications.

Intel’s test systems were not identical

Media and entertainment comparison

Intel lists 65 W PL1 for both systems, but the configurations also differed. The Core Ultra 9 285 system used 64 GB of DDR5 CUDIMM memory at 6400 MHz and a 1920×1080 display resolution; the Core i9-14900 system used 64 GB of DDR5 UDIMM memory at 5600 MHz and 1920×1200 resolution. The result is therefore an Intel estimate from its stated benchmark and configurations, not a controlled claim about performance in every setup.

Graphics comparison

For the 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited comparison, Intel reports scores of 1,845 for the Core Ultra 9 285 and 621 for the Core i9-14900. The listed memory speeds differ—6400 MT/s for the 285 and 5600 MT/s for the 14900—and Intel also lists distinct BIOS, microcode, and graphics-driver versions. The result is evidence for this test configuration, not a universal graphics uplift across games or creative applications.

Other Intel results are separate workloads

Intel also reports up to 3.39× faster CPU performance and up to 2.08× faster GPU performance for latency-optimized ResNet50. These are AI workload results, not explanations for the media benchmark’s 21% or the 3DMark graphics result. A faster result in one named test does not establish the same advantage in another. Intel’s performance index lists the workloads and reported comparisons.

How to use the claims when comparing processors

  • Match the exact SKU. The cited comparison is Core Ultra 9 285 versus Core i9-14900; do not transfer its percentage to the 285K or other models.
  • Match the workload. SPECworkstation media performance, 3DMark graphics, and ResNet50 inference measure different tasks.
  • Check the test conditions. Compare benchmark versions and settings, memory type and speed, power limits, firmware, microcode, graphics drivers, and platform before treating two results as directly comparable.
  • Apply results to your own software. These figures alone do not show how much faster a particular app will run, whether a system upgrade is worthwhile, or which processor offers better value at current prices.
