The Intel Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK can still make sense as a compact gaming PC—but only at a sensible used price and with its limitations understood. Its unusual Intel Core i7 and AMD Radeon Vega graphics package was capable for its time; it is not a safe bet for modern games at a price close to what the barebones kit originally cost.
What is the Intel Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK?
The NUC8i7HVK is the higher-end gaming model in Intel’s eighth-generation Hades Canyon mini-PC family. It pairs a 100 W, four-core/eight-thread Intel Core i7-8809G with AMD Radeon RX Vega M GH graphics and 4 GB of dedicated HBM2 memory. Intel marketed the unlocked processor and Radeon graphics as a compact system for gaming and VR. Intel’s product brief describes the platform and its design.
The distinctive feature is that CPU and discrete-class Radeon graphics are combined in one processor package. That arrangement helped Intel fit a gaming-oriented system into a small NUC chassis, but it does not make the machine equivalent to a current gaming desktop or mini PC.

In 2018 tests, the Vega M GH occupied a middle ground between entry-level and stronger mobile graphics. PCWorld’s 3DMark comparison put it roughly between a laptop GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1060 Max-Q, closer to the latter in that test. GamersNexus found the tested high-end NUC’s gaming performance between GTX 1050 Ti and RX 470 levels. These are historical comparisons, not predictions for current games or a guarantee of specific frame rates. PCWorld’s review and GamersNexus’ testing provide the period performance context.

Those results suggest the NUC was a capable compact gaming system in its generation. They do not establish how it handles games released in 2026: the available tests do not measure those titles, and performance will vary with game, resolution, settings, cooling and driver condition. Treat it as an older gaming PC for appropriately chosen games, not as a purchase for guaranteed performance in new releases.
What does the NUC8i7HVK cost—and what is included?
The original $999 price was for a barebones kit, not a complete computer. Buyers had to provide compatible SO-DIMM memory, storage and an operating system before the system was ready to use. Tom’s Guide also describes the NUC as a barebones product. Tom’s Guide’s review

The historic configured prices illustrate why the barebones figure can be misleading; they are not current used-market prices. For a present-day listing, compare the asking price with the actual contents and condition, then account for any missing components you must buy.

What do you need to complete the kit?
- Compatible memory: SO-DIMM RAM. The AnandTech test configuration used 16 GB DDR4-3200, but confirm memory requirements and compatibility for the particular kit before buying.
- Storage: an SSD, such as a compatible M.2 NVMe drive. Check whether a used unit already includes storage and whether its installed drives are healthy.
- An operating system: the barebones kit does not include one.
- The correct power adapter: confirm that it is included and works; replacing a missing or faulty adapter adds cost and inconvenience.
Ask the seller to state exactly which RAM and drives are installed rather than assuming a listing is complete. If the unit is used, confirm that it boots, recognizes its memory and storage, and runs its Radeon graphics under load before treating it as a gaming purchase.

How does it work as a 4K media PC?
AnandTech reports that all six display outputs are routed through the Radeon GPU and evaluates 4K HEVC HDR playback. Its conclusion is measured: the NUC has useful media capabilities but is not a perfect 4K home-theater PC. Check the exact display connection and playback requirements of your setup rather than assuming every display arrangement or media workload will work equally well. AnandTech’s review
What should you check before buying a used NUC8i7HVK?
- Total cost: add the price of any missing RAM, SSD, operating system and power adapter to the asking price.
- Graphics function: verify that Radeon graphics are detected and can run a game or graphics workload without crashes or visual errors.
- Thermals and noise: listen for excessive fan noise and check for instability during sustained use. The cited reviews do not establish a single standardized noise figure that can predict the condition of an individual used unit.
- Upgrade needs: inspect the included memory and storage and confirm they suit your intended workload; do not assume a listing has a particular configuration.
- Support outlook: check current driver availability and any warranty coverage for the exact unit. Neither should be assumed from the original product launch.
- Condition and return terms: prioritize a seller who can demonstrate the system working and clearly disclose defects or missing parts.
Is the Intel Hades Canyon NUC8i7HVK worth buying?
It can be a reasonable buy for someone who wants a very compact older PC and finds a complete, tested unit at a low enough used price. Its original gaming performance was respectable for its size, and the platform offers useful display and media features. But value depends on what is included, the machine’s condition and the games or workloads you expect it to run.

Compare it with newer mini PCs on total configured cost and gaming performance per dollar, as well as upgrade flexibility, noise and thermals, display support, warranty and driver prospects, and the condition of the particular used unit. Do not pay near the original $999 barebones launch price while still needing memory, storage and an operating system: that was a kit price from 2018, not evidence of present-day value.
