Intel’s DC S3610 and DC S3710 are legacy enterprise SATA SSD families, not current mainstream NVMe drives. Their defining difference is write endurance: Intel rated the S3610 for 3 drive writes per day (DWPD) and the S3710 for 10 DWPD, each over five years. Both families use 20nm MLC NAND with Intel High Endurance Technology, but capacity, form factor, performance and firmware status matter when choosing one for an existing system.

Contemporaneous coverage reported the launch of the two families; the original Intel launch release was not located. The specifications below are Intel manufacturer figures, not independent benchmark results.

What are the Intel DC S3610 and S3710?

They are Intel data-center SSDs built for SATA-attached enterprise workloads. Both support SATA Revision 3.0 at 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s and 1.5Gb/s. Their SATA interface does not guarantee compatibility with every server: the drive must also fit the bay and carrier, match the system’s power arrangement, and be supported by the host.

The families use 20nm MLC NAND and Intel High Endurance Technology (HET). Intel’s specifications distinguish them most clearly by endurance tier and available models.

How do their capacities and endurance ratings compare?

Family Listed capacities and form factors Rated endurance
DC S3610 2.5-inch: 100GB, 200GB, 400GB, 480GB, 800GB, 1.2TB and 1.6TB; 1.8-inch: 200GB, 400GB and 800GB. 3 DWPD for five years. Intel’s specification gives total-write ratings by specific capacity and form factor.
DC S3710 2.5-inch: 200GB, 400GB, 800GB and 1.2TB. 10 DWPD for five years: 3.6PB for 200GB, 8.3PB for 400GB, 16.9PB for 800GB and 24.3PB for 1.2TB.

DWPD expresses the rated amount of data that can be written each day relative to the drive’s capacity over the stated endurance period. The S3710’s 10-DWPD tier is substantially higher than the S3610’s 3-DWPD tier, but a higher rating alone does not establish that a drive is the right choice: match the rating and capacity to the workload and host requirements. Intel’s S3610 specification and S3710 specification list the model-specific details.

What performance does Intel specify?

Intel’s product specifications list sustained sequential read speeds up to 550MB/s and write speeds up to 520MB/s for both families; maximums vary by capacity. The family summaries also list up to 84,000 4KB random-read IOPS and 28,000 4KB random-write IOPS for the S3610, and up to 85,000 read and 45,000 write IOPS for the S3710. These are manufacturer maxima under specified test conditions, not promises for every capacity or application.

  • Intel SSD D3-S4510 Series (960GB, 2.5in SATA 6Gb/s, 3D2, TLC) Generic Single Pack

The specifications include different workload and measurement details across metrics, including tests with compressible and incompressible data. They also list average sequential latency of 55µs read and 66µs write, plus 99.9th-percentile read/write quality-of-service figures of 500µs/5ms under the specified test workload. A useful comparison therefore needs the relevant capacity and workload, rather than a single headline IOPS number. Consult the S3610 and S3710 data sheets for their metric-specific qualifications.

What should you check before using a secondhand drive?

Intel’s support article lists both series among former Intel NAND SSD products that are no longer supported by Intel. Lenovo’s S3710 guide says its listed S3710 options have been withdrawn from marketing. Those notices establish legacy status, not that every source of stock has disappeared.

  • Confirm the exact model, capacity, form factor and SKU against the server’s bay, carrier, power and host-support requirements. S3610 includes 1.8-inch variants; the listed S3710 family is 2.5-inch.
  • Review the drive’s health and SMART data, and ask for its firmware version.
  • Check the seller’s return terms and any warranty that remains.
  • Verify that the drive’s endurance tier and condition suit the actual write workload.

Intel’s INTEL-SA-00050 advisory, originally released March 15, 2016, describes an issue involving SATA-protocol-violating commands. Intel states: “If the Intel SSD Data Center Family for SATA product receives certain commands that violate the SATA protocol, the drive may stop responding to host commands and, in that event, user data will be inaccessible.” The advisory says the issue does not itself corrupt data and that platforms whose host implementation complies with SATA are not at risk.

The advisory lists S3610 and S3710 among affected families. It identifies firmware versions G2010100, G2010110, G2010120, G2010130, G2010140 and G2010141 as affected, and G2010150 as mitigated. Intel recommends applying the mitigated firmware with its Solid State Drive Data Center Tool. Do not assume a used drive has been updated: verify its exact model and firmware against Intel’s advisory and update guidance.

Which family makes sense for a legacy system?

Use the S3710’s higher rated endurance tier as a reason to examine it for a write-intensive workload, not as a substitute for checking the exact model, health or compatibility. The S3610 may be a fit where its rated endurance and available capacity meet the workload; its 1.8-inch models may also matter where the hardware specifically requires that form factor. For either family, compare the capacity-specific specification, actual workload needs, host support and firmware state before sourcing a drive.

Intel’s product-identification and support article identifies both as no longer supported by Intel. For S3710 ordering and withdrawal details, see Lenovo’s S3710 product guide.
