Yes, Intel rates the Core i9-14900KS for a maximum turbo frequency of 6.2 GHz—but that is not a fixed clock speed, an all-core guarantee, or a promise that the processor will run at 6.2 GHz continuously. Intel announced this 14th Gen desktop CPU on March 14, 2024; “breaks cover” is historical headline language, not a new launch.
Is the Intel Core i9-14900KS really 6.2 GHz at stock?
Intel’s 6.2 GHz figure is the processor’s maximum turbo frequency with Intel Thermal Velocity Boost. It describes a peak turbo operating frequency under qualifying conditions, not the chip’s base speed or a clock that every core will hold. Intel lists base frequencies of 3.2 GHz for the Performance-cores (P-cores) and 2.4 GHz for the Efficient-cores (E-cores). Intel’s March 14, 2024 announcement and its product specifications distinguish these figures.
“Stock” means the processor is being used at its configured factory operating settings rather than manually overclocked. It does not erase the distinction between base and turbo frequency: turbo behavior depends on operating conditions and configuration. Intel also cautions that performance varies by use and configuration. The 6.2 GHz headline should therefore be read as a maximum, not a sustained-speed guarantee.
Does the i9-14900KS run all cores at 6.2 GHz?
No. The 6.2 GHz rating is a maximum turbo frequency, not a published all-core frequency. Intel specifies 24 cores—8 P-cores and 16 E-cores—and 32 threads, but those core-count figures do not mean all 24 cores reach the maximum turbo clock simultaneously. The available specifications give separate P-core and E-core base frequencies, not a guaranteed sustained all-core turbo speed.

- Game without compromise. Play harder and work smarter with Intel Core 14th Gen processors
- 24 cores (8 P-cores plus 16 E-cores) and 32 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
- Leading max clock speed of up to 6.0 GHz gives you smoother game play, higher frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
For a particular workload, actual clocks and performance depend on the system and operating conditions. A single maximum-frequency number cannot establish how quickly the processor will finish a game, render, or other task.
What is the difference between the i9-14900KS and i9-14900K?
In Intel’s published maximum-turbo figures, the 14900KS reaches 6.2 GHz and the 14900K reaches 6.0 GHz. That is a 0.2 GHz difference in the listed maximum turbo frequency; it is not evidence of an equivalent percentage improvement in real-world performance. A meaningful buying comparison also needs workload-specific testing, power and cooling considerations, motherboard support, and the total cost of the build. The cited Intel materials do not establish independent benchmark results or current system prices.

Intel’s launch release claimed “up to 15% better performance gen-over-gen” versus the 13900KS under Intel’s stated conditions. It also claimed “up to 73%” improvement in a specified 3D production multitasking workflow versus a Ryzen 9 7950X. These are manufacturer claims with limited stated comparisons, not independent test results; they should not be treated as universal gains. Intel’s launch announcement says performance varies by use and configuration.

Intel lists 150 W processor base power and 253 W maximum turbo power for the 14900KS. Those are published processor power figures, not a complete estimate of system consumption or a specific cooler requirement. The cited sources do not validate a particular cooler, so select cooling and other components based on the complete system and their manufacturers’ guidance rather than inferring a product recommendation from the headline frequency.

Intel’s compatible-products information includes 600- and 700-series desktop chipset families and provides a compatibility tool. A chipset family alone does not confirm support for a specific board: check the exact motherboard model and revision, its manufacturer’s CPU support list, and the required BIOS version. Intel recommended using the latest BIOS for the best gaming and content-creation experience in its launch announcement. See Intel’s compatible-products information.
Will a 14900KS work with my Z790 or Z690 motherboard?
Intel’s compatibility information includes 700-series and 600-series desktop chipset families, which encompass those chipset generations. That does not by itself guarantee compatibility with every Z790 or Z690 motherboard. Confirm support for the exact board and revision using Intel’s compatibility tool and the motherboard maker’s CPU support and BIOS documentation. Do not assume an older BIOS will recognize or properly support the processor.

Does the 14900KS need a BIOS update?
It depends on the motherboard’s existing BIOS and the vendor’s support guidance. Check the board or system manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and revision, then install the latest applicable vendor-provided BIOS according to those instructions. Intel’s August 2024 instability statement included the 14900KS among covered 13th- and 14th-Gen desktop processors and said a BIOS update had been developed and made available through motherboard vendors or system manufacturers. That statement does not establish that every 14900KS is defective or that an update guarantees the condition of an individual system. Read Intel’s technical statement and follow the system vendor’s current guidance.

It tells you the 14900KS has a higher published maximum turbo frequency than the 14900K: 6.2 GHz versus 6.0 GHz. It does not, by itself, tell you the performance difference for your workload, the clock it will sustain, or whether the processor is worth its total platform cost. Compare relevant independent testing and current prices for the complete build, and verify BIOS support before buying. Intel’s ordering information lists recommended customer prices of $699 boxed and $689 tray; those are Intel recommendations, not verified current retail prices.
