Intel’s public materials confirm the names behind Panther Lake’s CPU cores: Cougar Cove is the P-core design, while Darkmont is used for E-cores and low-power E-cores (LP E-cores). Panther Lake is the platform codename for the processor family Intel markets as Core Ultra Series 3; Cougar Cove and Darkmont are core-design names, not laptop product names.
What are Cougar Cove and Darkmont?
They are Intel core-design codenames used in Panther Lake materials. Intel’s 2025 Technology Tour recap labels Cougar Cove as the P-core and Darkmont as the E-core and LP E-core design. Intel’s April 16, 2026 Core Series 3 launch deck repeats the pairing in a configuration example.

Not exactly. Panther Lake is Intel’s codename for the platform; Core Ultra Series 3 is the retail family name used in Intel’s October 9, 2025 announcement. Intel described it as a mobile/client system-on-chip family and its first client SoC built on Intel 18A. The announcement listed consumer and commercial AI PCs, gaming devices, and edge applications as target markets. Its stated plan for broad availability was January 2026; that original schedule does not establish stock or availability in every country today. Read Intel’s announcement.

Do all Panther Lake processors have the same core mix?
No. Intel’s April 16, 2026 deck shows an example configuration with two Cougar Cove P-cores and four Darkmont LP E-cores. That is the configuration in the example, not a specification for every Core Ultra Series 3 processor. Core counts and mixes depend on the exact SKU; check the model’s listing rather than inferring its layout from the codenames.
Which Intel Core Ultra processors use Cougar Cove and Darkmont?
Intel’s ARK catalog page for products formerly called Panther Lake listed 17 products when checked on October 4, 2026; that live count may change. Examples on the page include:

These are processor-level examples, not laptop performance results. Use Intel ARK’s Panther Lake product list to check current specifications for a specific model. Intel cautions that catalog data and availability can change.
What do Intel’s Panther Lake performance figures mean?
Intel’s October 2025 launch announcement claimed up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to 50% faster graphics performance versus the previous generation, as well as up to 180 platform TOPS. These are Intel’s own launch claims, not independent results for every processor or laptop. The TOPS figure is for platform AI acceleration, not CPU-only throughput; performance comparisons also depend on the conditions and footnotes Intel gives in its announcement.

Intel also describes 18A as a 2-nanometer-class process and claims process-level performance-per-watt and density improvements relative to Intel 3. Those process claims are separate from measured performance or IPC for Cougar Cove and Darkmont cores.

The codenames help explain the processor architecture, but they are not enough to select a complete laptop. Compare the exact processor SKU and core configuration alongside the machine’s other specifications:

- Cooling design and power limits, which affect sustained performance.
- Battery capacity and runtime measured in reviews under comparable conditions.
- Display, ports, price, and upgrade options.
- Independent tests for the workloads you care about, such as gaming, video work, or AI applications.
ARK can verify processor-level fields; the laptop maker’s specification sheet and independent system reviews are needed for details such as cooling, battery life, and display quality. A processor name alone does not determine those characteristics.
