You can play some games without a separate graphics card, but “integrated graphics” covers a wide range of performance. The right choice depends on the exact processor and computer, the games you play, and the resolution, settings, power, cooling, and memory configuration you expect to use.

When integrated graphics can be enough

A processor’s integrated graphics may suit gaming if your target games run acceptably at your preferred resolution and settings. That can make a computer without a discrete graphics card a reasonable option; it does not mean every integrated GPU can handle every modern game.

There is no single performance level shared by all integrated GPUs. Examples across generations include AMD Llano APUs, Intel HD Graphics, the Ryzen 5 5600G with Vega graphics, Apple M1, AMD Van Gogh and Ryzen Z1 Extreme, AMD Strix Halo, and Intel Core Ultra Series 3 with Arc B390 graphics. These examples span different eras and kinds of systems. They are not a controlled ranking or a complete survey of available hardware.

What determines gaming performance?

The games and settings you care about

Performance claims are meaningful only in context. A system that suits one game may struggle in another, and resolution and graphics quality change the workload. Set expectations using your own games, the resolution you plan to play at, and the quality settings and frame rate you consider acceptable.

Power, cooling, and memory

Integrated graphics share a processor and system design rather than operating as an isolated graphics card. The computer’s power limits and cooling can affect what the processor delivers; the Ryzen Z1 Extreme example, for instance, is conditional on sufficient power. Memory configuration and bandwidth also belong in a comparison, but a general claim about integrated graphics does not establish a particular memory kit or capacity as best.

Compatibility and software support

Raw graphics capability is not the whole story: a game also needs to work well with the platform and its software support. The Apple M1 example highlights compatibility as a consideration. Check the specific games and applications you intend to use rather than assuming that a capable-looking processor guarantees support.

How to compare systems fairly

When comparing two or more computers, use results for the same games, resolution, graphics settings, and frame-rate measurement method. A useful comparison should also identify the system’s power limits, cooling, memory configuration and bandwidth, driver and game compatibility, price, and whether you can upgrade its graphics later.

What the named high-performance examples establish

AMD Strix Halo and Intel Arc B390 are presented as high-performance integrated-graphics examples. The article also discusses Strix Halo performance in relation to resolution and upscaling. Those are editorial descriptions, not independently verified benchmark findings here; they do not establish a direct winner, a current ranking, or performance in a particular game.

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor is a product-search phrase associated with the Strix Halo discussion. That mention alone does not establish current pricing, availability, tested results, or which computer built around it is the best choice.

How to decide whether you need a graphics card

  1. List your games. Check compatibility and performance information for the specific titles you play.
  2. Set your target. Choose the resolution, graphics quality, and frame-rate expectations that matter to you.
  3. Check the complete system. Look for the processor’s exact graphics configuration and the computer’s power, cooling, and memory details—not just the processor family name.
  4. Compare like with like. Prefer results measured on the same games and settings, and account for driver support and upgrade options.
  5. Choose based on the gap. If the integrated option meets your requirements, a separate graphics card may be unnecessary. If it does not, consider a system with discrete graphics rather than assuming all integrated options perform alike.
