In April 2022, Insteon abruptly shut down its cloud service, cutting off cloud-dependent app control, remote access and voice-assistant integrations. That did not automatically brick every Insteon device: locally linked devices and some local-control setups could continue working. If your system is offline, avoid factory-resetting its hub until you know what configuration you might lose.
What happened when Insteon’s servers went offline?
In mid-April 2022, Insteon’s cloud service went dark without advance customer warning. In an April 19, 2022 account, Home Assistant founder Paulus Schoutsen said the company had “abruptly went dark and turned off its cloud.” He described users losing the ability to control and configure hubs through the cloud-dependent service, with automations that relied on it no longer running.
The outage affected cloud-connected functions: the old app’s access, remote control and voice-assistant integrations that depended on Insteon’s servers. It did not mean that every switch, sensor or other device stopped communicating locally.

In a June 9, 2022 statement, CEO Ken Fairbanks said a group of Insteon users had acquired the company and that restoring hubs was its first priority. Insteon later rebuilt its newer app and added support for additional legacy products. The company’s Director documentation describes that work; Hub 2 firmware notes dated January 29, 2025 also describe stability improvements when the hub is used as a modem with third-party controllers.

- Scenes and Smart Scheduling, Your Way - Create personalized lighting scenes and automate them by time of day, day of the week, or local sunrise and sunset with fully adjustable time offsets daily.
- Real-Time Alerts from Your Sensors - Get instant push notifications for motion detection, water leaks, or open doors when paired with Insteon sensors, which are always sold separately from the hub.
- Cloud Backup Protects Your Setup - Scenes, schedules, & device configurations are automatically backed up to the cloud, so your entire Connected Home setup is not permanently lost.
Were Insteon devices actually bricked?
“Bricked” overstates what the outage established. A device that depended on Insteon’s cloud for app, remote or voice control could lose those functions, while local device links and direct operation could survive. Insteon documents manual linking and scene creation without Hub and Connected Home Access.
What remains usable depends on how the system was configured. A locally linked switch or a manually programmed scene is different from an automation that needs the cloud to run. The shutdown did not establish that all devices or all locally configured systems failed.

What to do if your Insteon system is offline
- Do not factory-reset an offline Hub 2 as a first troubleshooting step. Insteon warns that a reset can remove device links, scenes and schedules, making recovery harder.
- Identify which functions have stopped. Check whether local switches and existing linked scenes still operate, separately from app login, remote access and voice control.
- Choose a control route before changing hub settings. The official cloud option uses a Hub 2 and Connected Home Access; a local option uses compatible hardware with Home Assistant.
- If using Home Assistant, check compatibility and network access. Its Insteon integration supports Hub models 2242 and 2245 and USB/serial PowerLinc Modems. Home Assistant communicates with supported equipment locally and does not require the Insteon app.
Choose between Insteon’s cloud service and local control
| Route | What it involves | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official Insteon service | Hub 2 Central Controller, model 2245-222, plus Connected Home Access. Insteon describes app control, remote access, Alexa and Google Home voice control, scenes, schedules and sensor alerts as features of this path. | Managed setup and remote features, but app and voice control require both the hub and paid access, and the route depends on Insteon’s cloud. |
| Local Home Assistant setup | Home Assistant with a supported Hub 2242 or 2245, or a supported USB/serial PowerLinc Modem. | Local operation without the Insteon app, but setup and ongoing maintenance are your responsibility; this route does not itself provide Insteon’s managed cloud service. |
What Insteon currently lists for its official route
Insteon’s product pages list the Hub 2 at $99.95 and Connected Home Access at $39.95. The company says its mobile app, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control require both a Hub 2 and Connected Home Access. Prices and service terms can change, so confirm them with Insteon before buying.
Using Home Assistant with Apple Home
Insteon documents a bridge from Home Assistant to Apple HomeKit. For that setup, Home Assistant and the Insteon Hub must be on the same local network.
