Microsoft’s “install” means downloading and setting up the Office apps on a device; “reinstall” means putting them back after removal or setting them up again on another device allowed by the license. In most cases, you sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the license, choose the Office product, and install it. Activation is a separate step.
What “install” and “reinstall” mean
Installing Office puts its apps on a computer. Reinstalling follows the same basic process, but you do it because the apps were removed or because you are setting them up again on a permitted device. Reinstalling does not, by itself, mean you need to buy Office again: first identify the account associated with the license.
Microsoft’s usual route is to sign in with that account and select the product available there. The exact instructions depend on your Office version, operating system, license, and whether an organization manages your account. Microsoft explains why an account is needed to sign in to Microsoft 365 or Office.
Find the account and license before reinstalling
Microsoft 365 home subscription
For a home subscription, start by signing in at microsoft365.com with the Microsoft account used for the subscription. If the license is associated with a different account, signing in with the wrong one may leave you without the expected install option.

One-time Office purchase
For eligible perpetual Office versions, sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the redeemed product and choose the Office product shown in that account. A product key is generally used once to redeem the purchase and associate it with an account. It is not normally entered again for a later reinstall. If you see a message that the key has already been used, use the account associated with the redemption rather than trying to redeem the same key again. Microsoft’s guidance on the “This product key has already been used” error explains this situation.
Work or school license
Your employer or school may control which license is assigned and whether you can install Office. If you sign in with a work or school account and see no install option, contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator. The Workplace Discount Program and volume-license products can have different installation routes, so do not assume a personal-account process applies. Install Office on a PC or Mac
For Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016, Microsoft provides separate instructions for PC and Mac. Sign in with the account associated with the license, select the product available to you, and follow the instructions for your operating system and Office version. These version-specific steps should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every Office release. Use Microsoft’s download and installation guide for Office 2021, 2019, or 2016.

Before proceeding, check these details:
- Whether your license is a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase; their terms and device allowances differ.
- Whether you are installing on Windows or Mac.
- Which Office version the license covers.
- Whether the account is personal or managed by a work or school administrator.
Check the current terms for your specific product before adding Office to another device or transferring an installation; the word “reinstall” does not establish that a particular license permits another device.

Activation happens after installation
Installation downloads and sets up the apps. Activation confirms that the license allows you to use them. After installation, open an Office app and follow any activation prompts. If the apps are already installed but Office reports a licensing problem, use Microsoft’s activation guidance rather than downloading the apps again as a first response. Microsoft’s reactivation instructions address that separate issue.

Install button does not start the download or setup
If selecting Install does not install Office, use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for that symptom and your version of Windows. Microsoft’s “Install button doesn’t install Office” page provides the relevant steps.

Connection or security software interferes
Microsoft identifies an offline installer as a possible workaround when a proxy, firewall, antivirus program, or connection problem interferes with a standard installation. Follow the current instructions for the correct Office product rather than downloading an installer from an unofficial source. Microsoft’s offline-installer guidance describes the option.
Office needs to be removed first
If you are trying to uninstall Office before reinstalling, check the current requirements for Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter. The cited guidance says its troubleshooter cannot currently uninstall Office 2024, and its supported versions and Windows requirements matter. Check Microsoft’s current uninstall instructions and tool limitations before using it.

What to remember
- Reinstalling usually means signing in to the account tied to your license and downloading the product again; it does not automatically mean repurchasing Office.
- A product key is generally a one-time redemption step, not something to re-enter for every reinstall.
- Installation and activation are different: installing puts the apps on the device, while activation verifies the license.
- License terms, operating system, Office version, and organization management determine the exact route.
