To install a VPN on a Fire TV Stick, first check whether the device runs Fire OS or Vega OS, then use the VPN app listed for that exact system in the Amazon Appstore. The installation route is not the same on every model: ExpressVPN documents separate Fire OS and Vega OS instructions, while Private Internet Access (PIA) says it is not currently compatible with Vega OS.
Prepare and set up your Fire TV Stick
Before installing a VPN, complete Amazon’s standard Fire TV setup. You need the Stick and its in-box accessories, a TV with an available HDMI port, an Amazon account, and an internet connection with its Wi-Fi details.
- Connect the Stick to an available HDMI port on the TV.
- Connect the Stick to wall power. Amazon’s setup instructions say not to plug its USB power cable directly into the TV.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the Stick.
- Follow the on-screen steps to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to an Amazon account, or create one.

Check whether your device runs Fire OS or Vega OS
Do this before choosing a VPN installation guide. On the Fire TV device, open Settings > My Fire TV > About and check the model and software-version information. ExpressVPN’s guide notes that Fire OS devices identify Fire OS in the version information; a Vega OS device may show an OS version without the Fire OS label.

Menu labels and app support can vary by model and operating system. If the version screen does not clearly identify the system, check the device model against the VPN provider’s current compatibility and installation instructions rather than assuming another model’s steps apply.
Install the VPN app from the Amazon Appstore
When the provider app is available for your specific device, the Appstore is the simplest route. Amazon’s documented app flow is:

- From the Fire TV home screen, open Find, or use Alexa voice search.
- Search for the VPN provider’s name and choose the matching app.
- Select Get or the shopping-basket icon to download it.
- Open the app, sign in to your VPN account, and follow the app’s prompts, including the operating system’s VPN connection permission prompt if shown.

ExpressVPN on Fire OS
ExpressVPN documents its Fire OS setup for Fire OS 6 and above. Its normal installation path is to find and download the app through the Amazon Appstore. After installation, open ExpressVPN, sign in, approve the VPN connection prompt, and use the app’s power button to connect. ExpressVPN also documents a sideloading alternative for some Fire OS situations; use that only when its current instructions support your particular device and OS.

ExpressVPN on Vega OS
ExpressVPN provides a separate Vega OS path: install the app through the Amazon Appstore. Its instructions say sideloading is not supported on Vega OS, so do not use a Fire OS APK or sideloading guide for a Vega OS device.
Private Internet Access on Fire OS
PIA’s guide, dated September 18, 2026, says its app is available from the Amazon Appstore on Fire OS 6 and above. Search for Private Internet Access, select VPN by Private Internet Access, download it, then sign in and accept the connection permission prompt. PIA also describes a Downloader-based manual installation route for compatible Fire OS devices. Use that route only if your device runs a supported Fire OS version and PIA’s current instructions apply to your model.

Private Internet Access on Vega OS
PIA’s September 18, 2026 guide says the service is not currently compatible with Amazon Vega OS. Do not try its Fire OS APK or Downloader route on Vega OS; those directions do not establish compatibility with that operating system.
Provider-specific instructions: ExpressVPN setup for Amazon Fire Stick and Fire TV and PIA setup for Amazon Fire Stick and Fire TV.

Why sideloading is not a universal workaround
Sideloading means installing an app outside the Amazon Appstore. Amazon’s developer documentation describes ADB command-line installation for app development and testing; that page was last updated October 29, 2020. It is technical background, not proof that every current Fire TV device permits sideloading or that a particular VPN app will work on it.
- Check the VPN provider’s current instructions for your exact model and operating system before using an alternative installation method.
- Do not treat an APK or Downloader guide written for Fire OS as evidence of Vega OS support.
- If the app is missing from the Appstore, confirm compatibility with the provider rather than assuming sideloading will solve the problem.

What installing a VPN does—and does not—establish
These setup instructions establish how to find and install apps and what the named providers say about operating-system compatibility. They do not establish that a VPN will improve streaming speed, unblock a particular country’s catalog, or provide a specific level of privacy. Those outcomes depend on factors beyond the installation steps and are not guaranteed by the compatibility information cited here.
