Instagram’s “AI info” label means Meta detected or was told that AI played a role in a post. It does not necessarily mean the whole image, video or audio was generated from scratch, and it is not an authenticity verdict. The system developed in stages from Meta’s 2024 image-labeling plans; its detection can miss AI-made content and can also flag real photos edited with AI-enabled tools.
How Instagram’s AI-labeling policy developed
Meta introduced the system in stages across Facebook, Instagram and Threads. The labels and rules have since covered more than fully generated images.

What “AI info” tells you—and what it doesn’t
The label is a disclosure about AI involvement, not a claim that every visible element is artificial. A post might be labeled because Meta detected technical signals, the creator disclosed AI use, the content was made with a Meta AI feature, or AI substantially modified part of a file. The label alone does not tell you which of these applied or how much AI contributed.

- A photograph of a real person may receive it after its background was expanded with generative fill.
- A real image retouched with an AI-powered feature may be flagged, depending on the editing and export workflow.
- A real video with AI-generated voiceover may involve AI even though its footage is genuine.
- A creator may disclose AI use even when its contribution is limited.
Meta changed “Made with AI” partly because the phrase could imply that a whole image was synthetic when it had only been modified. Photographers also reported ordinary photographs receiving labels after editing in software with AI-powered features. That possibility does not establish a single cause for every unexpected label: provenance metadata, an editing or export workflow, self-disclosure, or Meta’s automated systems may be involved.

How Meta can identify AI involvement
Signals from tools and file provenance
AI tools may attach metadata, invisible watermarks or other machine-readable signals. Meta said it was working with industry partners to recognize signals in images made by other companies’ tools. Provenance systems such as C2PA Content Credentials can carry information about a file’s origin and edits; they are not the same thing as a visible watermark. Creator disclosure and automated detection
A creator’s disclosure can trigger a label, and Meta may also identify likely AI use through its own systems. Neither route is a universal forensic test. Signals are more useful when originating tools preserve them; editing, compression, screenshots or re-exports can strip or alter metadata. Not every AI tool supplies signals Meta can recognize, and an unlabeled post is not proof of human authorship. What creators are expected to disclose
Not every use of AI has the same disclosure requirement. Meta said creators would be required to use its disclosure tool for photorealistic AI video and realistic-sounding AI audio in organic posts. Meta also said it could impose penalties when qualifying content was not disclosed. For other AI use, a label may instead result from detectable signals or a creator’s disclosure. Consult Meta’s current in-app instructions for the applicable post type because labels and requirements can change.
Disclosure does not make misleading or harmful material permissible. Meta can act under its Community Standards on content involving, for example, voter interference, bullying, harassment, violence or incitement. Its approach also allows for context measures or distribution limits in some cases, rather than treating the AI label as a substitute for enforcement. Meta outlines labeling and enforcement.

Organic posts and advertisements are handled separately
Posts shared by creators and users
For organic content, “AI info” may appear because Meta detects a signal or because the creator discloses AI involvement. Wording, visibility and placement can vary by format, product, region and subsequent interface changes; there is no single presentation that can be assumed for every Instagram post.
Paid ads
Ads have separate transparency rules and disclosure surfaces. Meta said its ad products would show AI information for ads made or significantly edited with its generative AI tools, and would expand transparency to certain third-party tools. An ad’s disclosure is not a finding that its claims are true, nor does it replace requirements for political advertising, consumer protection or other applicable rules. What a label does—and does not—establish

Meta’s stated approach is generally to label or add context to manipulated material rather than remove it solely because AI was involved. Content may still be reduced in distribution, rejected as an ad or removed if it violates other rules or is rated false or altered by fact-checkers. That does not mean an AI label automatically reduces reach; the label should not be confused with a fact-check or an authenticity certification. Meta’s policy explanation.

- Open the label’s explanatory panel, if available, to see what information Instagram provides about the disclosure.
- Check the creator’s own explanation for the type and extent of AI use.
- For claims about elections, health, disasters, news or public figures, seek independent evidence rather than relying on the label alone.
- Do not treat the absence of a label as verification, particularly when the file may have passed through tools that remove provenance signals.
The reported “AI creator” account label is a separate development
Social Media Today reported in May 2026 that Instagram was introducing an optional account-level “AI creator” label for creators who regularly post AI-generated or AI-modified content. This is not the same as the post-level “AI info” disclosure: one concerns an account, the other an individual piece of content. Because universal availability and exact settings are not confirmed by the official sources cited here, treat this as a reported rollout rather than a feature every Instagram user can access.
