Instagram tags attach an account to visual content, while @mentions identify an account in text or other surfaces such as Stories, comments, Notes, and Live videos. Both can make a profile easier to open, but neither guarantees extra reach or overrides the audience and privacy settings on the content.
What an Instagram tag does—and how it differs from a mention
A tag associates an account with a photo or Reel. Viewers can tap the tag to open the tagged profile. An @mention is an account name included in text or another Instagram surface; it can link readers to that profile without attaching the account to the image or video itself.
| Feature | Where it appears | What it helps viewers do | Audience and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account tag | Visual content, including photos and Reels | Tap the tag to visit the associated profile | Visibility still depends on the content’s audience and the account’s controls for incoming tags. |
| @Mention | Text and surfaces such as Stories, Notes, comments, Live videos, and captions | Tap the mentioned account name to visit its profile | Visibility still depends on the surface’s audience and the account’s controls for incoming mentions. |
Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority describes separate controls for tags in photos and Reels and mentions in Stories, Notes, comments, Live videos, and captions in its 2024 Instagram Annual Online Safety Report. A tag or mention is a way to identify an account, not a promise that the post will appear on that account’s profile grid or reach more people.

The general workflow is to prepare the Reel, reach its sharing screen, use the people-tagging control, find and select the intended account, and then share. Meta described tagging friends from the Reels share screen in its 2020 announcement, Introducing Instagram Reels. The announcement is historical; Instagram’s current labels, screen order, and available options may differ by app version or device.

The available evidence does not establish a current universal sequence for ordinary feed posts or Stories, a per-post tagging limit, or identical controls across iOS, Android, and the web. For those specifics, follow the options shown in your current Instagram app rather than relying on an older screen-by-screen guide.
Use tags to give collaborators clearer credit
A tag can identify someone who appears in or contributed to a post, such as a dancer, photographer, or makeup artist. Instagram also announced an enhanced-tag feature in 2022 that allowed a tagged creator’s profile category to appear on Feed posts and Reels, adding context about the person’s role. Meta’s announcement describes the publisher adding the tagged account and choosing whether to show that category; the creator controls their own profile category. See Meta’s 2022 announcement about enhanced tags for the feature as described at that time. Its current availability and exact controls are not established here.

Use a tag when the account’s connection to the visual content matters. Add a mention in the caption or another text surface when you need to explain the person’s role, thank them, or provide context that a tappable tag alone would not convey. Neither is a substitute for getting permission where it is appropriate to do so.
Control who can tag or mention you
Instagram provides controls over who can tag or mention an account, as well as a manual-review option for tags, according to Singapore’s IMDA 2024 report. To adjust them, inspect the app’s Tags and mentions controls in your account’s privacy settings. Menu wording and location can change, so use the labels currently displayed in your version of Instagram.

A tag does not bypass account privacy
Tagging someone does not make a private post public, grant viewers access to a private account, or expand the post’s audience by itself. Meta’s Reels announcement described public-account Reels as eligible for broader discovery through Explore, while private-account Reels were limited to followers in Feed. That distinction is about the Reel’s account and audience settings, not a special effect of adding a tag.

Location tags are a separate feature
A location tag identifies a place rather than a person or account. Meta said in August 2025 that location-tagged content can appear on the Instagram Map; this is distinct from tagging an account in a photo or Reel. See Meta’s feature announcement for that location feature.
