On October 1, 2026, Elon Musk replied to an X post announcing that its author had deleted Instagram with the line, “Instagram is for girls.” The remark echoed one he reportedly made in May; it was a personal jab, not an announced Meta–X policy or a finding about who uses Instagram.
What did Musk say, and what prompted it?
Musk’s October 1 reply was directed at a post by Geiger Capital, which said it had deleted Instagram and called it an “inherently female app” with “zero benefit.” Those words were Geiger Capital’s characterization. Musk responded: “Instagram is for girls.” News reports quoted the exchange; it was not an interview statement.
The remark repeats wording Musk reportedly used in May 2026. Coverage also says he separately mocked men who sent him Instagram profiles. The reports establish the public remarks, but do not establish Musk’s private reasoning for making them.

How did people react?
News reports described a mix of agreement, jokes and pushback in replies. Some users endorsed the gendered framing or joked that “X is for the boys.” Others objected that Instagram welcomes people of all genders. Hindustan Times quoted one X user saying, “I don’t agree. I think Instagram is a welcoming space for all genders, and I generally see much more body positivity, inclusivity and diverse representation there as well!”

These are examples selected by the outlets, not results from a representative poll. They show differing reactions to the exchange, not what Instagram users as a whole think.
Does Instagram’s audience support the claim?
Not as a straightforward description of its audience. India Today attributed October 2025 figures to Statista showing Instagram’s global audience as 50.6% male and 49.4% female. For the U.S. audience, it reported 44.8% male and 55.2% female. These are secondhand figures: the underlying Statista data and methodology were not checked for this report. They offer context, not a definition of Instagram or its users, and do not establish that the service is “for” any one gender.

Why does the exchange matter to the Meta–X rivalry?
The jab lands amid competition between Musk’s X and Meta’s services. Meta launched Threads in July 2023 as a text-based service developed by Instagram’s team, with Instagram sign-in, in the context of competition with X. That history helps explain why a swipe at Instagram can read as part of a broader platform rivalry; it does not turn Musk’s post into an official statement from either company.
