Instagram says it fixed a flaw that let an outside party trigger password-reset emails, but denies that its systems were breached. The separate claim that information tied to 17.5 million accounts was stolen comes from Malwarebytes; SecurityWeek reported that the circulating dataset appeared to be older scraped data and was not linked to the reset-email incident. The available reporting does not show that Instagram passwords were exposed.

Was Instagram hacked?

Instagram said on January 11, 2026, that it had fixed an issue allowing an external party to request password-reset emails for some users. The company said there was no breach of its systems and told recipients they could ignore the messages. Instagram’s statement was also reported by The Register, which described the issue as enabling reset emails without evidence that user data had been stolen.

That means two events were discussed at the same time, but they should not be treated as one confirmed breach: abuse of the reset-request process and the circulation of a dataset alleged to contain Instagram account information.

What does the 17.5 million-account claim mean?

Malwarebytes said in January 2026 that criminals had stolen information associated with 17.5 million Instagram accounts, including usernames, physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. That is the vendor’s allegation, not a confirmed finding by Meta. Malwarebytes’ account of the claim does not establish that the data was taken in the reset-email incident.

SecurityWeek reported that the dataset circulating at the time appeared to be older API-scraped data, likely resurfaced from an earlier incident, and did not appear connected to the password-reset requests. Its report put the number of email addresses in the dataset at approximately 6.2 million. SecurityWeek also said there was no evidence that passwords or other sensitive credentials had been compromised. These figures describe different things: Malwarebytes’ 17.5 million is an alleged account count, while SecurityWeek’s approximately 6.2 million is an email-address count.

Why did users receive unexpected reset emails?

Instagram acknowledged that an external party could request password-reset emails for some people and said it fixed the issue on January 11, 2026. The company’s statement explains why unsolicited messages could arrive; it does not establish that the recipients’ accounts had been accessed or that their passwords were changed.

An unexpected reset message can also be used to prompt a recipient to click a malicious link. Treat it cautiously: do not use links in an unsolicited email to sign in or reset your password.

What should you do if you received one?

  1. Do not click the email’s links. If the message is unexpected, close it rather than following its buttons or links.
  2. Open Instagram directly. Use the app or type Instagram’s official address yourself to check your account and security settings.
  3. Review logged-in devices. Look for sessions or devices you do not recognize, and take action through Instagram’s own security controls if anything seems unfamiliar.
  4. Enable two-factor authentication. This adds a sign-in check beyond your password and is a sensible precaution.

Instagram said recipients could disregard the reset emails after the issue was fixed. If you did not request a reset, receiving one by itself is not proof that someone knows your password or has entered your account.
