The British Library preserves ancient manuscripts through a combination of preventive care, item-specific conservation, protective storage, controlled access and digitisation—not one universal repair method. The aim is to keep originals stable and usable while retaining evidence of their history, and to make digital copies available without treating them as a replacement for the physical collection.
Preservation starts with prevention
The British Library’s collection spans materials including paper, parchment, papyrus, photographs, leather, wood, textiles, ceramics and metals. Each material—and each object’s condition—can call for different care. The Library describes its collection-care goal as keeping items accessible now and preserving them for future generations. Its conservation overview explains the breadth of that work.
Preventive conservation reduces the chance of damage before an object needs hands-on treatment. The Library’s account of preserving Bach’s manuscripts identifies temperature and humidity control, appropriate housing, and restrictions on access or use for especially vulnerable material. The International Dunhuang Programme likewise describes stable storage and protective enclosures as ways to help keep objects stable.
There is no single set of storage conditions or enclosure suitable for every manuscript. The International Dunhuang Programme’s storage guidance, for example, describes clear inert polyester envelopes for palm-leaf fragments: they allow study while avoiding direct handling. This is an example of an approach for particular material, not a universal prescription.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Conservation treatment is chosen for the individual object
When a manuscript is deteriorating, conservators weigh the likely benefit of treatment against possible harm and the loss of historical evidence. A British Library case study on Bach manuscripts discusses iron-gall ink corrosion: components of the ink can oxidise and damage paper, and the process can be difficult to stop completely. Limiting damage may be more realistic than eliminating it.
The case study describes aqueous calcium phytate treatment as one method that can mitigate iron-gall ink corrosion, but it is not a routine recipe for all manuscripts. Treatment requires testing and careful judgment. Washing may remove dirt and accretions, for instance, but it could also remove less obvious traces of historical use. Conservators therefore consider the deterioration mechanism, the object’s significance and condition, the likely result of intervention, and whether protective housing or reduced handling can manage the risk without treatment.

These examples illustrate a decision process, not instructions for treating an object. A conservator should assess an individual manuscript before treatment or before choosing materials for its enclosure.
Digitisation broadens access and can reduce handling
A digital surrogate lets people consult an image when they cannot access the original and can help avoid unnecessary handling. The International Dunhuang Programme encourages readers to consult surrogates first, while acknowledging that some research requires examination of the physical object. The British Library says it has digitised many manuscripts and archives for online access; its digitised manuscripts and archives page describes the collection. Some manuscripts in the holdings are more than two thousand years old.

A digital image cannot answer every question about an original. Researchers may need physical examination, and an image may not capture every feature relevant to their work. Availability also varies: the Library’s public collection page has noted that some material was unavailable following a cyber-attack. For Asian and African Studies material, the International Dunhuang Programme says physical access may require an advance request and research justification; some manuscripts may be unavailable because they are too fragile or awaiting conservation. Its IDP London guidance explains the programme’s access approach.
When deciding whether an image is enough, consider what the research question requires, whether the original is available and fit for consultation, the handling risk, and whether the image shows the details needed. Surrogates are a useful first choice, not a guarantee that every manuscript can be studied digitally or in person.

Digital preservation is a separate, ongoing task
Digitising a manuscript does not finish the preservation work; the resulting files need care too. The British Library’s Digital Collection Management Policy Framework: Part 3, Digital Preservation, published on 22 October 2025, describes digital preservation as continuing organisational and technical work across a file’s lifecycle. Its purpose is to keep digital content retrievable, authentic, intact and accessible over time—not merely to leave files on storage hardware.

Why prevention and access management matter at this scale
The British Library says it cares for about 150 million collection items. Its Care for Collections page reports four million item requests in its Reading Rooms each year and more than 1,500 items treated annually by conservators. The Library notes that the treated items represent only a fraction of what needs conservation. With a collection of this size, preventive measures, protective housing, access decisions and digital surrogates complement the limited capacity for hands-on treatment.

The collection includes manuscripts from Britain, mainland Europe, Asia and Africa. Access depends on the individual item’s condition and the relevant collection’s procedures; a manuscript is not necessarily available on demand. For readers, the practical first step is to check whether a digital version is available and consult the relevant access guidance before requesting an original.
