The 50 billion-tree ambition is a Saudi-led regional campaign, not a target for Saudi Arabia alone. Its announced split is 10 billion trees in Saudi Arabia and 40 billion across the wider region. The Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) frames that goal as planting or regenerating trees alongside broader land restoration.
What does the 50 billion figure cover?
The Middle East Green Initiative’s charter defines its lifetime ambition as planting or regenerating 50 billion trees, equivalent to restoring 200 million hectares. The geographic scope is regional: Saudi Arabia’s 10 billion-tree contribution sits within the combined ambition, while the other 40 billion are intended across the wider region. The MGI charter and Saudi Arabia’s announcement describe this division.
The goal is expressed over coming decades, not as a one-time planting event. The charter uses the phrase “planting or regenerating,” making clear that the ambition includes restoration rather than only planting new trees.

Announced in March 2021, the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) covers domestic environmental action, including Saudi Arabia’s 10 billion-tree goal. The MGI extends the effort across the region: its 50 billion figure combines the Saudi ambition with 40 billion trees elsewhere. The initiatives are connected, but their geographies and totals are not interchangeable.

What does the initiative do beyond setting a tree target?
The charter presents MGI as a regional response to land degradation and a framework for restoring ecosystems and protecting vegetation cover. Its scope includes forests, rangelands, and agricultural areas; the 200 million-hectare equivalent therefore should not be read as a tree-planting area alone.

The charter was adopted at a ministerial meeting on 26 October 2022 and endorsed by leaders in November 2022. It serves as the initiative’s governance reference.

Regional targets reviewed in July 2026
In an update dated 22 July 2026, the MGI said its Executive Committee reviewed member-country targets totaling 35.4 billion trees and 99.4 million hectares of degraded land. Those figures describe national targets contributing to the regional goal; they do not show that those trees have been planted or that the land has already been restored. The same update said the Secretariat was developing a five-year strategy and roadmap. Read the MGI update.

Saudi figures reported in March 2026
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture reported on 27 March 2026 that the country had restored one million hectares of degraded land and planted more than 159 million trees under the SGI. The ministry described the domestic goal as 10 billion trees, equivalent to rehabilitating 40 million hectares. These are ministry-reported figures for Saudi Arabia, not a measure of regional MGI progress. Read the ministry’s milestone report.
In that ministry report, UNCCD Executive Secretary Dr. Yasmine Fouad said: “This achievement proves that land restoration is possible even in the most challenging environments.” The comment accompanied the reported Saudi milestone; it is not an independent evaluation of tree survival or of the entire regional initiative.

Do the reported totals show how many trees survived?
No survival-rate figure or independent long-term ecological assessment is established by the official sources cited here. A reported planting total, a restoration-area figure, and a national target are different measures; none by itself tells readers how many trees survived to maturity or what ecological outcomes followed. The reported numbers should therefore be understood as official targets and progress claims, not as a verified count of enduring trees.
