GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Bloomberg Businessweek’s October 14, 2026 making-of report describes more than eight years of development, a workforce that grew from 2,441 employees in 2018 to 4,711 across 12 offices by August 2026, and repeated efforts to control the project’s expanding scope. Unnamed analysts cited by Bloomberg forecast 40 million copies sold and more than $3 billion in revenue during the first four months; those are projections, not Rockstar results or a disclosed preorder total.
Inside the making of GTA VI
Rockstar began full development more than eight years before the currently announced launch date. The production has required a much larger organization than the team that made Red Dead Redemption 2, extensive reference work in the Miami area—the basis for fictional Vice City—and repeated decisions about what the game could realistically include.
Bloomberg portrays GTA VI as a project that expanded its ambitions, then narrowed parts of its original plan as the practical demands of building a denser, more reactive open world became clearer. The report also describes delays and the challenge of coordinating staff spread across a global network of offices.

Rockstar’s workforce grew sharply
| Measure | 2018 | August 2026 | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rockstar employees | 2,441 | 4,711 | Bloomberg reports a nearly doubled workforce over the period |
| Offices | Not stated | 12 | The August 2026 figure covers Rockstar’s offices worldwide |
| Development period | Project in production | More than eight years of full development | Reported by Bloomberg Businessweek in October 2026 |
The headcount increase is not simply a hiring footnote. A project with almost twice as many employees must coordinate art, engineering, design, writing, animation, quality assurance and production across time zones and locations. Bloomberg’s account links that scale to changes in how Rockstar operates, while also showing why additional staff did not automatically make the schedule shorter.

Why did GTA VI take so long to make?
A larger and more reactive world
The report says Rockstar pursued a world with greater density and reactivity than its earlier games. More possible interactions create more dependencies: systems have to work together, characters and missions need to respond consistently, and changes in one part of the map can affect testing elsewhere. Rockstar ultimately had to narrow elements of its original ambition rather than keep every early idea.
Coordination across 12 offices
By August 2026, 4,711 employees were distributed across 12 offices. Managing a game at that scale adds review, integration and testing work. Bloomberg describes coordination itself as a production pressure, particularly as the project moved through delays and scope decisions.
Repeated delays and iteration
GTA VI’s schedule changed more than once during its long production. Delays can reflect unfinished technology, content that needs rework, or the time required to test a broad open world. The cited reporting does not provide a single official explanation for every schedule change, so claims that assign the delay to one specific feature or department go beyond what is confirmed.

Research trips to Miami
Rockstar staff made research trips in and around Miami, the real-world reference for Vice City. Those trips supplied observations for the setting and environmental detail. They are part of a broader world-building process, not evidence that the fictional map is a one-to-one copy of the region.
How Rockstar’s production approach changed
Bloomberg’s report presents GTA VI as a forcing function for Rockstar’s organization: a much larger staff, work shared among many offices, and tighter scope control. The account describes the studio changing how it operates while trying to preserve the quality associated with its major releases.
The available reporting does not establish a complete list of labor policies, a company-wide return-to-office rule, or a final staffing breakdown by discipline. What it does establish is the operational problem: a globally distributed team had to align on an unusually large game while Rockstar reduced or reshaped parts of its original plan.

When does GTA VI release?
Rockstar’s official product site lists November 19, 2026 as the release date. That is the current announced date in the cited official material. A date on a product site is a target until the publisher confirms that the game has shipped, so it should not be treated as proof that no further change is possible.

How many copies will GTA VI sell?
Unnamed analysts cited in Bloomberg’s coverage expect 40 million copies and more than $3 billion in revenue during the first four months. The figures are forecasts made in 2026. They are not Rockstar guidance, audited sales, confirmed preorders or a guarantee that revenue will be distributed evenly across platforms and regions.

| Claim | Status | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 40 million copies | Analyst forecast | Unnamed analysts, cited by Bloomberg in 2026 |

| Final development budget | Not disclosed in the cited sources | Online budget numbers should be treated as unverified unless supported by a primary company filing or Rockstar statement |
Take-Two’s 2025 filing explains the business model behind the expectations: “Rockstar Games’ strategy is to develop a limited number of titles that are known for their quality and longevity in the market for which they can create sequels and incremental revenue opportunities through virtual currency, add-on content, and in-game purchases.” The same filing warns that release timing and market acceptance can change results. That strategy helps explain why analysts model a very large launch and a long commercial life, but it does not turn a forecast into a guarantee.

What the long production says about GTA VI
GTA VI is not merely a delayed sequel. It is Rockstar’s attempt to build a larger, more responsive open world while operating at a scale the studio had not previously reached. The combination of field research, scope reduction, a nearly doubled workforce and work across 12 offices shows the trade-off: more detail and systems require more coordination, testing and time.
If the announced date holds, players will see the result of that process on November 19, 2026, on the two confirmed current-generation consoles. Until Rockstar or Take-Two reports actual sales, the 40-million-copy and $3-billion figures remain ambitious analyst expectations rather than settled facts.
