Piaget’s colour story began with an engineering breakthrough. The Maison says its ultra-thin 9P hand-wound movement, introduced in 1957, left more room for larger dials. That extra visual space encouraged watch designers, jewellers and stone-cutters to treat the dial as a canvas, eventually making ornamental stones as important to a watch’s identity as its movement.

Today, that heritage appears in Colours of Extraleganza, a current chapter in Piaget’s high-jewellery universe. It combines diamonds and coloured gemstones with stones such as opal and carnelian, using sculptural forms and deliberate contrast rather than treating colour as a decorative afterthought.

How Piaget began using colour in watches

1957: the 9P creates more visual space

Piaget dates the launch of its 9P ultra-thin hand-wound movement to 1957. According to the Maison, the movement’s slim profile made larger dials possible. A larger dial offered more room for unusual materials, broader colour fields and compositions that could not be achieved as easily on a conventional, smaller surface.

1963: ornamental stones move onto the case and dial

Piaget says it began placing ornamental stones on watch cases and dials in 1963. Its examples include opal, turquoise, coral and tiger’s eye. The company’s historical account also identifies 1963 as the year of its first watches with ornamental stones set into the dial. These materials brought natural pattern, translucency and variation to watches: no two slices of stone can produce exactly the same visual effect.

Why stone-cutting mattered

Thin ornamental stones can be fragile and difficult to prepare for a watch. Piaget attributes the development of these designs to cooperation among watchmakers, artisans and gem-cutters, with particular emphasis on the skill required to slice delicate stones for dials. The result was a dialogue between precision mechanics and jewellery craftsmanship, rather than a standard watch with colour added at the end.

The 21st Century collection was a historical turning point

Piaget says it unveiled the 21st Century collection at the Basel Watch Fair in 1969. This historical series brought lapis lazuli, malachite, coral and other vivid ornamental stones into one-of-a-kind jewellery watches. The collection combined watchmaking, jewellery, fashion and contemporary design, positioning the timepiece as a piece of high jewellery that also happened to tell time.

The name matters because 21st Century and Colours of Extraleganza are not the same collection. The former refers to Piaget’s 1969 historical chapter; the latter is part of the Maison’s current Extraleganza universe.

1996: renewed focus on ornamental dials

Piaget says it unveiled its first ornamental-dial watches in 1996 and highlighted the precision needed to slice the stones. That work reinforced a central idea in the brand’s colour heritage: the stone is not merely a surface covering. Its cut, thickness, grain and natural inclusions determine how the finished watch looks.

What is Colours of Extraleganza?

Colours of Extraleganza is Piaget’s current high-jewellery collection chapter built around colour as both material and signature. The Maison’s artistic director, Stéphanie Sivrière, describes the principle directly: “Colour plays an integral role in Piaget’s history and heritage.”

The collection brings together precious stones—pink and blue sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds—with ornamental stones including opal and carnelian. Piaget presents the pieces through sculptural silhouettes, strong colour relationships and forms designed to sit, wrap or move on the body. The listed stones are examples from the collection, not a complete inventory of every piece.

How to read a piece in the collection

  • Stone type: Precious gems provide brilliance and saturated colour, while ornamental stones contribute natural pattern, texture and a broader visual field.
  • Palette: Look at the contrast between hues—such as pink against blue, or vivid gems against a quieter stone surface—rather than judging colour by a single stone.
  • Sculpture and movement: Necklaces, cuffs, rings, earrings and pendants are designed as three-dimensional objects. How a piece curves, hangs or shifts on the body is part of its design.
  • Object category: Some creations are jewels alone; others are high-jewellery timepieces. The watch pieces continue the historical conversation between a mechanical movement and an ornamental dial.

Piaget’s colour and high-jewellery timeline

Year Development Why it matters
1874 Georges-Édouard Piaget establishes his first workshop in La Côte-aux-Fées. Beginning of the Maison’s documented history.
1957 Launch of the 9P ultra-thin hand-wound movement. Thinner construction allows larger dials and more creative scope, according to Piaget.
1959 First Geneva salon displays watchmaking and jewellery creations. Shows the two disciplines presented together.
1963 Ornamental stones begin appearing on cases and dials. Opal, turquoise, coral and tiger’s eye enter Piaget’s watch design language.
1969 21st Century debuts at the Basel Watch Fair. One-of-a-kind jewellery watches unite vivid stones with contemporary design.
1996 Piaget unveils ornamental-dial watches. Renewed emphasis on the specialised cutting of delicate stones.
Present Colours of Extraleganza develops the current colour-led high-jewellery chapter. Precious and ornamental stones are used in sculptural jewellery and timepieces.

How the current chapter fits Piaget’s wider high-jewellery universe

Piaget’s official overview also lists Extraleganza, Swinging sautoirs & cuff watches, Piaget Treasures, Piaget Rose, Limelight Gala and Aura among its high-jewellery categories. Across those categories, the Maison presents rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets and jewellery watches. They are different design families, however, and should not be assumed to share the same palette, construction or availability.

In 2024, Richemont announced a 150th-anniversary high-jewellery release of 96 pieces divided among three realms: “Extraleganza”, “Piaget Society” and “When mastery ignites artistry”. That dated announcement is anniversary context; 96 is not a published count for the current Colours of Extraleganza chapter.

Where to see the collection

Piaget directs visitors to its boutiques for discovery and appointment experiences. Because chapter names, individual pieces and boutique availability can change, the current selection should be confirmed directly with Piaget before planning a visit. No consistent public price basis is established across the pieces, so comparisons should focus on materials, colour, form and whether a creation is a jewel or a timepiece rather than assumed price rankings.
