A coaxial cable carries a signal through four concentric layers: a center conductor, dielectric insulation, metallic shielding, and an outer jacket. Each layer has a different job, but their materials and construction vary by product. To choose the right cable, match its electrical specifications, connectors, and installation rating to the system and route.

What is a coaxial cable?

Coaxial cable—often shortened to coax—is an electrical cable built around a central conductor, with insulation and a metallic shield arranged concentrically around it. Amphenol RF defines it as a cable consisting of “a central conductor, an insulating layer, a metallic shield, and an outer insulating layer.” That geometry gives the cable its name and describes its basic anatomy; it does not mean every coax has identical materials or shield layers.

What are the four layers of a coaxial cable?

1. Center conductor

The center conductor carries the electrical signal. Depending on the cable, it may be solid or stranded, and may use materials such as copper or aluminum. The precise conductor construction is a product specification, not something to infer from the word “coax.”

2. Dielectric insulation

The dielectric surrounds the center conductor and keeps it separated from the metallic shield. It contributes to the cable’s electrical behavior and helps maintain signal integrity. Dielectric material and construction vary among products.

3. Metallic shield

The shield surrounds the dielectric. It may use foil, braid, or a combination; some products include multiple shielding layers. The shield helps protect the inner components from external electromagnetic interference and contain RF signals. Shield type and layer count are not universal.

4. Outer jacket

The jacket is the cable’s outer insulating layer. It protects the underlying construction from mechanical and environmental exposure. Materials in the cited Southwire products include PVC, low-smoke PVC, and polyethylene, with options depending on the cable variant and installation rating.

How do actual coaxial cable constructions differ?

RG labels do not, by themselves, establish the exact conductor, insulation, shield, jacket, or suitability of a cable. These Southwire specifications illustrate variation within two familiar 75-ohm product families; they are examples, not universal definitions of RG6 or RG59.

How should you choose a coaxial cable?

  1. Identify the application and electrical requirements. Confirm the device or system’s required impedance and operating frequency, and check attenuation requirements against the manufacturer’s data. A cable that physically fits may still be electrically unsuitable.
  2. Check the exact construction. Verify conductor material and whether it is solid or stranded, along with the dielectric construction. Do not assume that all cables carrying the same RG label are built alike.
  3. Choose shielding for the use case. Check whether the cable uses braid, foil and braid, or additional shield layers. The source specifications document different shield constructions; select based on the system’s requirements rather than treating a higher layer count as a universal guarantee of suitability.
  4. Match the cable to the installation route. Check the jacket material and the applicable fire or environmental ratings for where the cable will run. Product variants can differ for plenum or outdoor use; confirm the actual rating in the current specification rather than relying on a general cable-family name.
  5. Confirm connector compatibility and flexibility. Make sure the cable works with the intended connectors and can be routed appropriately. Amphenol RF identifies flexibility and connector availability among the factors to consider; cable preparation and connectorization should suit the actual cable construction.

What should you know about installation?

Installation is more than choosing a cable and attaching connectors. SCTE’s 2025 recommended-practices catalog, identified as SCTE 180 2025, covers outside-plant access-network work including cable handling and testing, overhead or underground placement, bonding and grounding, preparation, connectorization, activation, and testing. It is a practice document for that context, not a universal DIY procedure. Follow the requirements applicable to your system, location, and installation route.
