Researchers reported in 2012 that commercial fountain pen ink could serve as a counter electrode in laboratory dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The work tested ink in planar and fiber-shaped cells; it did not turn ordinary rooftop panels into ink-coated solar cells.
What the researchers did
In a 2012 paper, Xin Cai, Zhibin Lv, Hongwei Wu, Shaocong Hou and Dechun Zou investigated fountain pen ink as a potentially cost-efficient counter-electrode material. A DSSC has a light-absorbing dye and an electrolyte; its counter electrode helps complete the electrochemical circuit. The ink was used for that electrode role, not as a substitute for the whole cell or as a coating applied to a conventional photovoltaic panel. The Peking University Institutional Repository abstract identifies both planar and fiber-shaped DSSCs in the study.
What performance did the study report?
The repository abstract reports power-conversion efficiencies above 6% under AM1.5G illumination at 100 mW cm−2. In a contemporaneous account, Chemistry World reported 6.2% cell efficiency and described it as comparable to the platinum electrochemical device used for comparison. Chemistry World also reported that the ink film was spin-coated to a thickness of 3 μm. These are results and details reported for that experimental work, not a benchmark for current commercial solar panels.
How the ink compared with platinum
The repository abstract says electrochemical impedance spectroscopy found slightly lower charge-transfer resistance for the ink counter electrodes than for platinum counter electrodes in planar cells. That is a specific measurement in the study’s devices; it does not establish that fountain pen ink generally outperforms platinum across cell designs or operating conditions.

The authors also reported that adding TiO2 nanoparticles to the ink reduced device series resistance and the diffusion impedance of electrolyte passing through electrode pores. Those observations describe changes in the tested cell configuration, rather than a consumer modification readers can apply to an existing panel.
Why fountain pen ink was an interesting material
The result repurposed a commercially manufactured suspension of carbon particles for an electrochemical application. In a Royal Society of Chemistry blog post, solar-energy expert Andrew Hamnett called the work “A nice bit of lateral thinking.” The point was not that ordinary ink could absorb sunlight like a complete solar cell, but that its carbon-containing formulation could be investigated as an electrode material.

What the result does—and does not—mean
- It demonstrates: a laboratory study of commercial fountain pen ink as a counter electrode in planar and fiber-shaped DSSCs.
- It does not demonstrate: a method for coating or upgrading standard rooftop solar panels.
- It does not identify: a specific ink brand or formulation that consumers can buy to reproduce the reported result.
- It does not establish: a currently available consumer product or a retail solar-cell kit using this method.
The paper, “Direct application of commercial fountain pen ink to efficient dye-sensitized solar cells,” appeared in Journal of Materials Chemistry in 2012, volume 22, issue 19, pages 9639–9644 (DOI: 10.1039/C2JM16265B). Its significance is as a materials-repurposing research result: an everyday ink suspension was tested in a particular class of laboratory solar cells.
