For a practical starting point, print at least once a week if your ink tank printer otherwise sits idle. HP also describes using a printer every one to two weeks as a way to reduce the risk of drying or clogging. That is general HP guidance, not a universal interval for every brand or model; follow the maintenance and storage instructions for your exact printer.
Why inactivity can affect an ink tank printer
When an ink tank printer is left unused, the concern is usually the printhead nozzles, not ink drying inside the sealed reservoir. Dried ink or a blockage at the nozzles can lead to missing colors, blurry text, or blank output. HP discusses both regular printing and keeping the printer powered so automatic maintenance can run as ways to reduce this risk. The precise behavior depends on the model. How often should you print?
Use a weekly print job as a reasonable habit if you rarely print. HP says to print at least once a week and also describes using the printer every one to two weeks, even if it is only to print a page. These are manufacturer recommendations, not results from a study or a guarantee that a particular interval will prevent clogs on every printer.
The guidance does not specify a page design, ink coverage, or volume that will be sufficient for all models. There is no evidence here for a special test page or a universal amount of color printing. Check your printer’s manual for its own inactivity advice and whether it performs automatic maintenance.

What to do when print quality changes
Do not run head cleaning on a fixed schedule just because the printer has been idle. Use the printed result and the printer’s maintenance instructions to decide whether cleaning is needed.
- Look for symptoms. Blank pages, blurry text, or a missing color can indicate a nozzle problem.
- Run a nozzle check. Compare the printed pattern with the example or instructions for your printer.
- Clean only when indicated. If the nozzle check shows gaps or the output remains poor, follow the manual’s head-cleaning procedure.
- Escalate cautiously. Power cleaning is a more ink-intensive measure described for severe or repeated clogging, not as routine upkeep.

Automatic maintenance and power
Some printers carry out maintenance automatically, but its timing and operation are model-specific. Epson’s FAQ describes automatic head maintenance for certain Stylus Photo models at startup or after inactivity; it uses ink. That example does not establish how another Epson model—or another brand—behaves. Epson Europe’s FAQ covers the specified Stylus Photo models.
Keeping a printer powered may allow its automatic maintenance to run where the manufacturer designed it to do so. Follow the manual rather than assuming that every printer needs to stay on, or that powering it on will trigger the same routine. Automatic cleaning can consume ink, so it is not a reason to initiate repeated maintenance cycles yourself.

Preparing for a long period without printing
Ordinary idle periods and long-term storage are different situations. If you expect not to use the printer for an extended time, consult the storage section of its exact manual before switching it off or storing it. Professional Epson documentation describes both the risk of clogged nozzles after prolonged non-use and model-specific procedures, including automatic cleaning after power-on and pre-storage maintenance for particular equipment. Those procedures should not be generalized to household printers or other models.
- Look up the exact model, not just the product family.
- Follow the manufacturer’s stated storage and power-down steps.
- Do not substitute repeated cleaning cycles for a model’s storage procedure.
Epson’s professional storage guidance and its maintenance schedule apply to the equipment covered by those materials, not to every ink tank printer.
