“Infrared camouflage that sticks” most likely means adhesive-backed wrap film, not a cloth gear wrap or a camouflage net. INTERMAT describes its CHAMELEON SKIN as a multilayer cast film for wrapping specialist equipment, but that manufacturer description is not independent proof that the product hides an object from every infrared sensor. What any infrared material can do depends on the wavelength band, sensor, target, surroundings and conditions.

What is adhesive infrared camouflage film?

It is a film designed to adhere to equipment surfaces and alter some aspect of the object’s infrared signature. INTERMAT describes CHAMELEON SKIN as a multilayer cast adhesive-backed anti-thermal/IR wrap film intended for full wraps and specialist military equipment. The cited product information is from the manufacturer; it does not establish an independent performance figure for this commercial film or prove universal concealment. INTERMAT’s CHAMELEON SKIN information also describes its products as restricted to military, law-enforcement and special-forces sales and subject to export permits. Confirm current eligibility and applicable rules before considering procurement.

Adhesion is only one practical feature. A buyer or technical evaluator would also need to establish which bands the film is designed for, what substrates it can be applied to, how it behaves thermally, and how it is applied, removed and maintained. The available product description does not settle those questions for every installation.

Infrared is not one detection band

Different sensors detect different parts of the infrared spectrum and different properties of a target. Near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) applications concern reflected radiation; thermal cameras detect radiation from objects in mid-wave or long-wave infrared (MWIR/LWIR). A material’s performance in one band does not demonstrate performance in another. Saab’s description of multispectral camouflage distinguishes NIR, SWIR and thermal infrared signature management. Saab’s ULCAS overview provides that distinction in the context of a camouflage net.

VViViD Vinyl Camouflage Pattern Wrap Air-Release Adhesive Film Sheets (1ft x 5ft, Desert Camo)
  • VVIVID Camouflage vinyls lend an authentic military Camouflage appearance to any surface, whilst adding a layer of tough, durable weather-proof protection. Perfect for blending into the surroundings during hunting season, but also stylish and attractive all year round.
  • VViViD car wrap films conform to contours and can stretch up to 200% (30% or less is suggested for optimal performance), making installation a simple process, even for beginners.
  • Can be easily applied to any non-porous surface with only a heat gun and squeegee. Easily repositioned or removed with no risk of chipping factory paint.
  • VVIVID vinyls feature air channel release technology, allowing you to smooth it onto a surface and eliminate air bubbles for a perfect finish.
  • Installs in a fraction of the time it would take to apply a new paint job, and at a fraction of the price. Long life span, up to 10 years indoor and 5-7 years outdoor.

Thermal signature management may involve emitted radiation, emissivity, insulation, reflection, convection and radiative cooling. The result depends on the material’s design and the scene it is used in: the target, background, weather and operating conditions all matter. The Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) discusses low thermal-wavelength signatures and wavelength-dependent reflectance, including surfaces designed to reflect selectively in atmospheric windows. Its report frames the objective as reducing a platform’s thermal-wavelength signature, not making it universally undetectable. FOI report FOI-R–1197–SE (2003).

Film, scrim, net and coating are different options

Form What the cited sources describe What to compare
Adhesive-backed wrap film INTERMAT describes a multilayer cast film for wrapping specialist equipment. A separate 2025 paper studies an adhesive TPU multilayer film; it is not the INTERMAT product. Supported wavelength bands; substrate compatibility; emissivity or reflectance behavior; application and removal; durability; whether evidence is vendor-provided or independently tested.
Modular scrim or gear wrap TacDefence lists InfraScrim as a dual-sided textile strip that can be wrapped or woven into weapons and tactical gear. Textile versus adhesive attachment; size and weight; stated spectral uses; thermal and visible camouflage; evidence behind performance claims.
Camouflage net Saab describes ULCAS as a lightweight, flexible multispectral net for static concealment. Coverage area; background adaptation; spectral bands; portability; deployment context.
Coating or paint FOI discusses IR-reflective pigments for low-emissivity camouflage paints; INTERMAT also markets anti-thermal coatings. Permanent versus removable application; supported spectrum; substrate preparation; maintenance; evidence provenance.

These categories are not interchangeable. Scrim is textile rather than adhesive film, and a net is a larger covering intended for a different deployment context. TacDefence’s product information describes InfraScrim as a textile strip, not a sticky film. TacDefence InfraScrim product page.

What published measurements do—and do not—show

Studies can show that a particular material changed measured properties under a defined setup. They do not establish that every commercial wrap has the same performance, nor do they guarantee concealment in the field.

  • 2025 adhesive TPU multilayer film: A paper in ACS Applied Polymer Materials reports that the studied film’s emissivity was tunable from 0.05 to 0.64 by varying the thickness of its top PMMA layer. In its outdoor experiments, the paper reports a saliency score of 0.20, compared with 0.45 for conventional visible camouflage and 0.41 for a uniform low-emissivity film. These are results for the paper’s material and experiments, not CHAMELEON SKIN or adhesive IR films generally. ACS Applied Polymer Materials paper (2025).
  • 2021 experimental multispectral device: A Nature Communications study reports an 8.4°C reduction in inner temperature and a 5.9°C reduction in surface temperature, plus decreases of 53.4% in mid-wave and 13.0% in long-wave IR signal, at an input power density of 2500 W·m⁻². Those measurements compare the study’s particular device with chromium film under its specified conditions; they are not product specifications for commercial wrap films. Nature Communications study (2021).

Neither set of results establishes how a particular wrap will perform on a different object, in a different environment or against a different sensor. For CHAMELEON SKIN specifically, the cited manufacturer page makes product and reduction claims, but the sources cited here do not provide an independent standalone performance figure.

How to assess a “thermal camouflage wrap” claim

Before choosing a material, match the claim to the actual detection problem rather than treating “infrared” as a single specification. Useful questions include:

  • Our vinyl is marine safe and can be used on interior and exterior surfaces. Also suitable for architectural applications.
  • Which band is addressed: NIR, SWIR, MWIR, LWIR, or more than one?
  • Is the claim about reflected radiation, thermal emission, temperature, or a measured sensor signal?
  • What test method, sensor, target, background and environmental conditions produced the result?
  • Is the evidence from an independent study of the exact product, or a seller’s description or a study of a different material?
  • What application surface, removal process, durability and maintenance limits apply?

For an adhesive film, confirm the product is designed for the intended substrate and use case. Do not infer a commercial wrap’s performance from a research film simply because both are adhesive-backed or multilayer materials. For a multispectral camouflage scrim or gear wrap, check the specific product’s stated construction and evidence; availability and marketplace listings can change.

Does infrared camouflage film work?

Materials can be engineered to affect measured infrared properties, and research has reported changes for specific samples in controlled or described experiments. That is not the same as proving that a commercial adhesive film will conceal a particular object from a particular sensor in the field. The most defensible answer is product-, band- and context-specific: require evidence for the exact material and the relevant detection conditions, and treat broad claims of invisibility or universal effectiveness with skepticism.
