The Infortrend EonStor GSe Pro 108 is an eight-bay desktop storage appliance for workgroups that need more than shared folders: it combines NAS file services with IP SAN and Fibre Channel SAN options, plus data-protection features. Its unusual breadth is also its trade-off. An independent review published in 2019 found that its Atom processor constrained write performance and that expansion boards were expensive, so it is best judged as a specialized storage platform—not as a current all-purpose NAS performance leader.
What the GSe Pro 108 is designed to do
The GSe Pro 108 belongs to Infortrend’s GSe Pro 100 family. In its 2019 review, IT Pro described it as providing NAS, IP SAN and Fibre Channel SAN services in one desktop appliance. That combination can suit an organization consolidating file shares and block-storage workloads, particularly where FC connectivity or storage-oriented data protection is important.
For ordinary file sharing, the reviewed system offered SMB/CIFS, FTP and NFS services, with local or LDAP/Active Directory-authenticated user controls. These are functions the reviewer configured and examined; the review is not evidence of how they perform with every present-day workload or software version. The reviewer also listed volume snapshots, file- and block-level remote replication, thin provisioning, SSD caching, WORM volumes and support for self-encrypting drives. Automated HDD/SSD tiering and expanded snapshot or replication capacity were described as optional capabilities.
Infortrend’s regional Brazil product page additionally promotes EonOne management, Docker app templates, cloud synchronization and backup, surveillance, WORM and MFA. Treat those as manufacturer claims rather than independent verification of current model support. The same page claims expansion to 40 drives and more than 500TB using four enclosures; realized capacity depends on enclosure and drive configuration.

What the 2019 review found
Dave Mitchell’s IT Pro review, published 4 June 2019, praised swift deployment, data protection, the range of data ports and overall FC performance. The reviewer used eight 4TB WD SATA disks and the setup wizard to create RAID arrays, pools and volumes. That disk set describes the review’s test hardware; it is not a current drive recommendation.

Write performance is the central concern
The review identified the Atom CPU as a constraint on write performance. That matters if sustained writes, heavy concurrency or CPU-intensive storage tasks are central to the deployment. The published finding is from a 2019 review, not a current benchmark against newer appliances, and should not be generalized into a present-day ranking.
Expansion and memory need budgeting
The review criticized the cost of optional expansion boards and said some applications needed a memory upgrade. It described a converged host board configurable as 4 × 8Gb/sec FC, 2 × 16Gb/sec FC or 4 × 10GbE, and another board option with dual 10GbE RJ-45. For JB Pro 208 desktop expansion units, the review said Infortrend’s dual-port SAS3 board was required—creating a choice between that expansion path and other host-board connectivity. These are review-era configuration details; verify present compatibility and cost before designing a build.

Noise figure applies only to the reviewed setup
IT Pro reported an iPad-based SPLnFFT reading of 38.4 dB at one meter in front of its tested unit. This is the reviewer’s measurement using that method and hardware, not a standardized or guaranteed noise specification for every installation.
Which workloads make sense?
- Mixed file and block storage: Consider it when a workgroup needs conventional NAS file services alongside IP SAN or FC SAN connectivity, and can validate the required host-board configuration.
- Local backup or protected shared storage: Snapshots, remote replication, WORM and self-encrypting-drive support may be relevant, but confirm which functions and capacity limits are included or separately licensed for the exact unit.
- Surveillance storage: Infortrend promotes surveillance use on its Brazil page. Validate camera software compatibility, workload requirements and support for the intended deployment rather than relying on the regional product description alone.
- Simple home or small-office NAS: If the priority is a broad consumer application catalog or straightforward high-throughput file storage, the GSe Pro 108’s SAN emphasis and the 2019 write-performance concern make it a less obvious fit.
Licensing and capacity details to verify
The 2019 review stated that the base snapshot license allowed 64 snapshots per volume and 128 per system, with optional increases to 256 per volume and 4,096 per system. Those are review-era license figures, not a guarantee of current entitlement. Infortrend’s family datasheet and regional product page describe capabilities at family or vendor-claim level; confirm model applicability, license inclusion and current limits with the supplier.

Likewise, do not treat the Brazil page’s claim of more than 500TB as a fixed usable capacity. The page associates that figure with expansion using four enclosures, while actual raw and usable capacity depends on drive sizes, RAID configuration, enclosure support and system limits.
How to decide whether it is worth buying
There is no verified current price, stock status or present-day competitor test in the available published material. IT Pro called the appliance pricey in 2019 and said it could not match Qnap and Synology for features and apps at that time; that comparison is historical, not a 2026 assessment. Evaluate a specific offer by totaling the chassis, qualified drives, required host board, expansion shelf, licenses and support terms.

- Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
- Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
- Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing

- Write down the protocols you actually need. Separate file sharing (SMB/CIFS, FTP or NFS) from block-storage needs (IP SAN or FC SAN). Do not pay for connectivity your hosts cannot use.
- Match workload to the performance evidence. If writes are critical, seek current workload-specific results or a supplier demonstration; the independent write-performance finding dates to 2019.
- Confirm every component and entitlement. Check the current drive Compatibility Guide, Host Board & Memory Guide, enclosure compatibility and included software licenses for the exact model and configuration.
- Get a complete, current quote. Include board and enclosure costs, disks, software options, warranty and firmware/support lifecycle. The published material does not establish current prices or availability.
Verdict
The GSe Pro 108’s case is its combination of NAS, IP SAN and FC SAN services with enterprise-oriented protection features in an eight-bay desktop system. That is a meaningful fit for a workgroup with mixed protocols and a confirmed need for those safeguards. The counterweight is an aging evidence base, a 2019 finding of Atom-limited write performance, and costly expansion options. It merits consideration only after checking today’s support status, qualified components, licenses and total system cost; the available evidence cannot establish whether it is currently good value or readily available.
