A 2020 EE Times interview with Infineon’s Lars Wemme presented IoT SAFE as a cellular, SIM-based security framework and the OPTIGA Connect Consumer OC1110 as an embedded-SIM solution for consumer-device OEMs. The material describes launch-era positioning; it does not establish that OC1110 is still available or supported today.
What the interview covered
The EE Times listing dated April 15, 2020 identifies Lars Wemme as Infineon’s Senior Director for IoT, Embedded, and Digital Security solutions. Its subject was the GSMA IoT SAFE framework and Infineon’s OPTIGA Connect Consumer OC1110 embedded SIM, aimed at manufacturers building connected consumer products.
Because the listing is from 2020 and the available material is not a current product page, treat the discussion as historical launch-era context rather than a present availability, specification, or lifecycle statement.

IoT SAFE is a GSMA framework that uses a SIM as a hardware root of trust for IoT data communications. In practical terms, the cellular subscription component can provide a protected place for cryptographic credentials and help a device establish trusted communications over a mobile network.
#1 Best Overall
- GLOBAL SCALABILITY: Our secure IoT SIM Card can connect to 2G/3G/LTE/CatM1 data in over 130 countries. LoraWan and Sigfox are available as well.
- DEVICE CLOUD ACCESS: Perform encryption over the cloud, reduce device power consumption, and lower data transfer amount to lower your costs. Less power and data on your IoT/M2M devices.
- FULL CONTROL VIA CONSOLE/API: Even a single active IoT SIM Card can get you immediate access to our full suite of IoT cellular connectivity services with a full-featured user console and API and data pool for complete control of every connection. Monitor and manage the state of every connection, view active/inactive status, check data usage, adjust speed or even pause/restart or terminate any connection at any time.
- IDEAL FOR: Fast prototyping and full-scale deployment. Optimized for IoT/M2M data. Voice & SMS not supported.
- PAY AS YOU GO: Only pay for the data and services you use. No minimum commitments.
That scope matters: IoT SAFE is specifically associated with cellular-connected devices. It should not be described as a universal security layer for every IoT transport, nor as a replacement for all application, firmware, or cloud-security controls.
Security functions it does not automatically provide
- It does not by itself secure Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, or other non-cellular links.
- It does not replace secure boot, signed firmware updates, key management, access control, or application-layer authorization.
- It does not make a device trustworthy merely because it contains an eSIM; the surrounding hardware and software design still determine how credentials are used.
What OPTIGA Connect Consumer OC1110 was
OPTIGA Connect Consumer OC1110 was described as an embedded SIM solution for OEMs integrating cellular connectivity into consumer devices. An eSIM is soldered into the product instead of being a removable card that an end user inserts and replaces.
Rank #2
- Mini GSM / GPRS breakout board is based on SIM800L module, supports quad-band GSM/GPRS network, available for GPRS and SMS message data remote transmission.
- The board features compact size and low current consumption. With power saving technique, the current consumption is as low as 1mA in sleep mode.
- It communicates with microcontroller via UART port, supports command including 3GPP TS 27.007, 27.005 and SIMCOM enhanced AT Commands.
- AT command interface with "auto baud" detection.
- TTL serial port for serial port, you can link directly to the microcontroller
Infineon’s 2020 product positioning distinguished OPTIGA Connect Consumer from the separate OPTIGA Connect IoT line. The distinction indicates different target markets, not that the two names are interchangeable.
Why an OEM would integrate an eSIM
- Product integration: the cellular identity is built into the device during manufacturing.
- Deployment flexibility: a connected product can be designed around remote subscription or profile management rather than a user-accessible SIM slot.
- Physical resilience: removing a card is not an option when the SIM is embedded, which can suit sealed or compact consumer products.
Those are characteristics of the embedded-SIM model. They should not be read as confirmed specifications or current capabilities of OC1110 beyond what the 2020 descriptions state.
Rank #3
- Easy SIM Card Integration: Allows quick and secure SIM card connection to your microcontroller or development board for GSM, GPRS, and cellular communication projects.
- Standard Pin Header Design: Equipped with clearly labeled pin headers, ensuring easy, solderless integration with breadboards, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and other platforms.
- Reliable and Durable Construction: Made from high-quality materials for stable connections and long-term reliability, suitable for both prototyping and permanent installations.
- Versatile Applications: Perfect for SMS messaging, IoT devices, GPS trackers, cellular modems, remote monitoring, and wireless communication experiments.
- Compact and User-Friendly: Small PCB footprint fits in tight spaces, while the breakout design makes it easy for beginners and advanced users to add SIM functionality to any project.
eSIM connectivity is not the same as device-to-cloud authentication
The cellular network uses SIM credentials to authenticate a subscriber to the mobile network. That is a different trust relationship from authenticating the device, its software, or its data to an application cloud.
In a separate March 31, 2020 interview, Wemme described Infineon OPTIGA Trust authentication devices as supporting device-to-cloud authentication independently of the communications medium: “If you use those devices, the OPTIGA Trust devices, you can run it on cellular connectivity; you can run it on wired communication; you can run it on WiFi, Bluetooth, whatever you like.”
Rank #4
- Versatile SIM Card Support :This SIM Card Module features a secure socket, allowing for easy insertion and removal of SIM cards, making it ideal for various projects requiring mobile connectivity.
- Convenient Breakout Board Design :The breakout board is designed to simplify connections, featuring clearly labeled pin headers that facilitate easy integration with microcontrollers and development boards.
- Compact and Lightweight: With its compact design, this module is perfect for space-constrained projects. It can easily fit into your existing setups without adding bulk.
- High Compatibility: Compatible with a wide range of microcontrollers, including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and more, this module makes it easy to add cellular communication capabilities to your projects.
- Reliable Performance: Built for durability and stability, this SIM Card Module ensures consistent performance, providing a reliable solution for your IoT and mobile application needs.
That statement concerns the OPTIGA Trust product family, not the OC1110 eSIM and not IoT SAFE. It illustrates the architectural distinction: a device can use one component for cellular subscription authentication and another mechanism for application or cloud identity.

Questions an OEM should answer before choosing this approach
- Which transports must be secured? If products use Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or Ethernet as well as cellular, plan application-layer identity and key protection for those paths rather than assuming IoT SAFE covers them.
- Who owns the identity? Separate the mobile operator’s subscription and profile-management requirements from the device certificate or cloud account used by your application.
- What happens during manufacturing and provisioning? Define when credentials are injected, how profiles are downloaded or changed, and how a returned, refurbished, or retired device is handled.
- What is the current component status? Confirm availability, regional operator support, lifecycle notices, certifications, and complete specifications directly with Infineon or an authorized distributor. The 2020 sources do not answer those questions.
What is—and is not—known today
The sources support a clear historical reading: IoT SAFE was presented as a cellular SIM-based security framework, and OPTIGA Connect Consumer OC1110 as an embedded-SIM component for consumer-device OEMs. They do not verify current OC1110 availability, end-of-life status, technical specifications, supported operators, or a retail purchasing channel.
