What is the wider release plan?

After the previews, the makers plan a broader theatrical release in India and overseas in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, according to the PTI report. That is a planned six-language rollout, not confirmation that every language version will open simultaneously or in every market. No date for the wider release was announced on October 2, 2026.

Why is the film returning to theatres?

Gondhal originally opened theatrically in India on November 14, 2025, according to India Today’s October 2, 2026 report. The new previews precede the makers’ planned wider rollout and follow the film’s selection as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

The Film Federation of India selected Gondhal on September 18, 2026. Davakhar Films says it was chosen from 33 films. Being India’s official entry means it is the film selected to represent the country in the category’s Oscar process; it does not mean the Academy has nominated it or that it has won an Oscar.

What is Gondhal about?

Davakhar Films describes Gondhal as a 2025 Marathi feature set in rural Maharashtra. A sacred Gondhal ritual provides the backdrop for a forbidden love triangle. Suman manipulates Sarjerao’s obsession as she tries to regain control over her destiny. The production gives the film the English tagline “Sacred obsession.”

Santosh Davakhar wrote and directed the film. The production page lists Ilaiyaraaja as composer and credits Diksha Davakhar as co-producer, Amalendu Choudary for cinematography and Ashish Mhatre for editing. Its listed stars are Kishor Kadam, Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohoni and Nishad Bhoir; PTI names Deshmukh, Kadam and Sohoni in key roles.

Why the preview announcement matters to audiences

The previews offer an early chance to see the film before its planned broader theatrical rollout, while the six-language plan could make it available to audiences beyond its original Marathi release. Director Davakhar told PTI: “For us, these previews are more than just early screenings; they are an opportunity to bring ‘Gondhal’ back to audiences for whom the theatrical experience was always at the heart of the film.”

Davakhar Films also lists the Silver Peacock for Best Director for Davakhar at the 56th International Film Festival of India in 2025 and the FIPRESCI Award for Gondhal at the 17th Bengaluru International Film Festival in 2026. These are awards reported by the production, separate from the film’s status as India’s Oscar entry.
